Spring/Summer 2014

What do you mean “Senior?!” It turns out that I have been a Senior (by credits) since JANUARY! That means, I’ll officially be a KU Senior for three semesters, but no worries, I will be graduating on time in May of 2015. But sadly, yes. I am graduating this year. I have no idea how this is even POSSIBLE since I just got to Lawrence yesterday, but I’m doing my best to roll with it. I am so proud of the semester I was able to close my third year out with: I took four Applied Behavioral Sciences classes, started work on my thesis, held my position on the MACURH Regional Board of Directors (RBD), did a ton of work for the conference, had 100 Happy Days, got back into the Honors Program, and earned my first 4.0 while at KU! Now that I have officially found my place at KU, it seems grossly unfair that I have to say goodbye to it in just a short year, but I do know that my Junior Year was my most successful and favorite year at KU (so far…).

Joining a team in the middle of the year is always difficult, and joining the RBD halfway through the cycle was exceptionally so. I was afraid that no one would like me and that it

would be awkward… BOY was I wrong. After just a few hours in a car, and a night hanging out in a hotel room during No Frills 2014, I truly made some of the best lifelong friends I could ask for. Even though it feels like we are all spread across the galaxy, and as much

as I miss them, I can’t tell them how thankful I am for their friendship, acceptance and support on my MACURH journey.

Mind the Gap: London 2014

1

This year, I finally accomplished one of my life-long dreams: I went to London! Sadly, it was only for Spring Break, but if anything, it gave me the motivation and drive to make sure I return and finish what I started. I traveled with nine other classmates and two instructors and it was part of a class that examined how an American could prepare for an international career, or even more basic, what an international career was. The trip was part sight-seeing, part business meetings and interviews, and 100% adventure. We

route, told my roommate where I was going, and just adventured. I got a little lost, but I was counting on that! I wanted to prove that I didn’t need my GPS or phone to find my way around… and I was so proud of myself for that. And the Tube! I had a wonderful time traveling by Tube and it was so easy for me to pick up. I wish Lawrence had one. London gave me the confidence and the determination to make sure I continue to travel, explore the world, and to have those experiences that aren’t planned or comfortable.

all know how much I love to fly, so flying overseas was a great experience for me (for some of my classmates, not so much). I actually love airline food, surprise surprise. But what was truly surprising to me was how comfortable I felt in a new country. Granted, we may be having a completely different conversation had I traveled to a non-English speaking country, but let’s take baby steps. One of my favorite experiences from London was when I had an afternoon off from interviews and I mapped out a geeky-tourist

Saying Goodbye to AURH

1

As my year came to a close, with it came the stepping down as President of AURH. Due to it being a stressful time of year, and with so many other wonderful things going on, I don’t think I properly took the time to reflect just how much AURH changed my life, or give it the thanks it deserves. I met some of my best friends through AURH; I took opportunities that I would have never dreamed possible because of AURH; I traveled across the country and back, twice; and, I was introduced to MACURH. This year I had the honor of representing the residents in the halls at the Groundbreaking Ceremony for the two new buildings, giving out two Bronze Pins (the same one I was awarded a year ago), and leaving AURH in a place that I hope will continue to inspire and challenge students much in the same way it inspired me my very first week in

McCollum three years ago. As much as I will miss this organization, I know it’s in great hands. One of the hardest lessons I’ve learned is when to know you’ve done the best you can and pass it to another leader. It’s something I’m still perfecting, but I have no regrets of my time with AURH.

This amazing group of people deserves far more thanks than I

can give and I miss them so much. They supported me and

accepted me and I am so lucky to have them as friends.

100 Happy Days From March 15 - June 22, I participated in

the 100 Happy Days movement on Instagram, documenting things that make me

happy with my personal hashtag of #CatalystToMyHappiness. Here are a few “catalysts” and why they make me happy!

Of course, London was eight wonderfully happy days! This was taken on my last day in London as

I was mailing my postcards! (Because I love sending mail!)

These three made NRHH so much fun. We would do dinner before, goof off during meetings, and all drive Kait home after. We each identified with a pillar of NRHH-

hence the name four pillars!

Living with Laura was the best. We went to meetings together, and then came home and complained together. We did crafts together

and sat around and watched tv together. Through it all, I am so grateful she was there

for me, I miss her all the time and I am unbelievably proud of her.

Also a wonderful group of leaders, I am so excited to host MACURH with them as the RBD! They have been invaluable to me and I will miss them greatly after my term

ends.

The MACURH 2014 Staff has grown and thrived in the last six

months and I couldn’t be prouder of them. They are amazing chairs,

leaders, students… and, of course, friends.

Always happy to show my nerdy side, I took a pic with Star Wars characters for the third year in a

row celebrating May the 4th.

Three years later, she still likes me! My very first KU roommate and friend, Claire and I are going to be separated for the first time this fall (because she’s going to nursing school!) and I’m so sad she’s not living 500 yards away, but I’m so happy she’s living her dream and

that we had a fabulous summer together!

What a crazy summer! Even though I’m sure I say that every year, I really mean it this time. I finally joined the

exclusive, collegiate club of students who get Mono (and it was not fun), hosted the regional board in a retreat for a weekend, walked my campus at 2AM in the middle of a thunderstorm, turned 21 with the coolest cake ever, got

another tattoo with Claire, saw Guardians of the Galaxy at midnight, went to the OneRepublic, The Script, and American

Authors concert, moved into my fall assignment (back to Lewis!), and did ALL this while being an RA in Hashinger! Told you it was crazy. All I can say is, I am so glad I got sick now, and not in the

fall when the conference is here, and I am so grateful for every single memory I made this summer. I understood that this could be my last

summer/year in Lawrence and I wanted to make sure I made the most of it. This next year is going to be full of frustration, stress, anxiety, change, and (let’s be real) a lot of tears. But that’s not at all what I’m looking forward to.

I’m looking forward to the tears of joy when I get my diploma, when the conference closes and the staff celebrates, when I get into a grad school,

when I hug each and every person 30 times before I say see you later, and when that amazing, unexpected thing happens. If this is my final year as a Jayhawk,

I’ll be leaving a legacy that I am extremely proud of, and bonds of friendship that will last the rest of my life. So here’s to my senior year at the best school in the world: Rock Chalk!
