TIME IN CANADA IS DIVIDED INTO SIX TIME ZONES

Most of Canada operates on standard time November-March; and daylight savings time the rest of the year.

Pacific Time Zone (UTC-08:00) Mountain Time Zone (UTC-07:00) Central Time Zone (UTC-06:00) Eastern Time Zone (UTC-05:00) Atlantic Time Zone (UTC-04:00) Newfoundland Time Zone (UTC-03:30)

Canadian Time Zones - What Time is it ….

DT-DAYLIGHT SAVINGS TIME: (MAR-NOV) BEGINS ON THE SECOND SUNDAY IN MARCH

ST-STANDARD TIME: (NOV-MAR) BEGINS ON THE FIRST SUNDAY IN NOVEMBER

WHAT IS DAYLIGHT SAVINGS TIME?

Daylight saving time (DST) typically involves advancing clocks forward by one hour during the summer months, so that evenings have more daylight and mornings have less.

WHAT ARE TIME ZONES?

The world is divided into 24 time zones, Canada stretches across 6 of them. Each time zone crossed is a change of an hour, with the exception of the Newfoundland time zone, which is a

change of half an hour.

WHAT ARE THE ABBREVIATIONS USED FOR TIME ZONES IN CANADA?

PACIFIC STANDARD TIME - IS ABBREVIATED AS PSTPACIFIC DAYLIGHT TIME - IS ABBREVIATED AS PDT

MOUNTAIN STANDARD TIME - IS ABBREVIATED AS MSTMOUNTAIN DAYLIGHT TIME - IS ABBREVIATED AS MDT

CENTRAL STANDARD TIME - IS ABBREVIATED AS CSTCENTRAL DAYLIGHT TIME - IS ABBREVIATED AS CDT

EASTERN STANDARD TIME - IS ABBREVIATED AS ESTEASTERN DAYLIGHT TIME - IS ABBREVIATED AS EDT

ATLANTIC STANDARD TIME - IS ABBREVIATED AS ASTATLANTIC DAYLIGHT TIME - IS ABBREVIATED AS ADT

NEWFOUNDLAND STANDARD TIME - IS ABBREVIATED AS NSTNEWFOUNDLAND DAYLIGHT TIME - IS ABBREVIATED AS NDT

WHAT IS GMT/UTC?

UTC (Coordinated Universal Time) is the modern implementation of GMT (Greenwich Meantime) and is used as the basis for official time around the world.

Why is the Abbreviation for Coordinated Universal Time UTC?

English speakers originally proposed CUT- coordinated universal time, while French speakers proposed TUC - temps universel coordonné

The compromise that emerged was UTC which conforms to the pattern for the abbreviations of the variants of Universal Time (UT0, UT1, UT2, UT1R, etc.).

UTC:

English: "Universal Time Coordinated" French: "Universel Temps Coordonné"

HOW IS UTC CALCULATED?

The Prime Meridian (longitude 0° 0' 00"), is the arbitrary stroke on our maps that passes

from pole to pole and divides the Earth into east and west, just as the Equator splits it into

north and south. This imaginary line known as the Greenwich Prime Meridian keeps the

world ticking to the same symbolic 24-hour clock known as Coordinated Universal Time (UTC).

Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) - The hours, minutes, and seconds of our 24 hour clock are kept close to the mean solar time at the Earth's prime meridian (zero degrees longitude) located near Greenwich, England.

A time offset is an amount of time subtracted from or added to UTC to get the current civil time. During Daylight Standard time the UTC offset is typically obtained by adding one hour to standard offset time.

EST is calculated as 5 hours behind Coordinated Universal Time (UTC)

EDT is calculated as 4 hours behind Coordinated Universal Time (UTC)

During standard time Kingston, Ontario is

-5 hours behind; so the sun will come up here, five hours after it does in Greenwich, England

SASKATCHEWAN

The Canadian province of Saskatchewan is geographically located in the Mountain Time Zone. However, most of the province observes Central Standard Time year-round. Saskatchewan does not change its clocks for daylight saving time.

Special Note: Lloydminster, Saskatchewan is an exception; that follows Mountain Time.

Due to this discrepancy, many computer programs offer a distinct "Saskatchewan" option

CTSK- Central Time Saskatchewan

INTERESTING NOTE: CITY OF LLOYDMINSTER, CANADA

ONE CITY ,TWO PROVINCES!

The Lloydminster area was first settled in April, 1903. When the provinces of Alberta and Saskatchewan were created in 1905 and the 4th Meridian selected as the inter-provincial boundary, the Village of Lloydminster was split in two.

This situation resulted in the duplication of all municipal functions such as the creation of two separate municipal councils, two municipal offices and two fire departments. Later the two communities were amalgamated into a single municipality - the Town of Lloydminster, by an Order-in-Council of both provinces on May 20, 1930.

On January 1, 1958 the Town of Lloydminster received its charter as the City of Lloydminster and became the 10th City in both provinces.

The provincial border runs north to south, falling directly on 50th Avenue (Meridian Avenue) in the center of Lloydminster.

Addresses east of 50th Avenue are considered to be in Lloydminster, Saskatchewan and addresses west of 50th Avenue are considered to be in Lloydminster, Alberta.

Lloydminster's distinctive situation is reflected in other legal matters, including its time zone. Alberta law requires the use of daylight saving time, while Saskatchewan does not observe daylight saving time. Lloydminster's charter allows it to follow Alberta's use of daylight saving time on both sides of the provincial border; this places the city in the Mountain Standard Time Zone and synchronizes clocks with those of Alberta.

NUNAVUT

Nunavut covers 3 time zones.

Most of Nunavut Canada uses the Eastern Time Zone and observes Daylight Saving Time. However, the Central and Mountain Time Zones are used in several places in Nunavut.
