  • Madelyn's Message

Greetings to the Community of Women in the Inland District. What a wonderful uplifting time this has been as you president these last few months.

Anita Lawson from Orchards United Methodist Church invited me to come and share

United Methodist Women. On May 20th, Melva Lohstroh, Sharon Stovall Ann Fritz and I

went to Orchards UMC where I presented UMW 101. I have received wonderful news.

They decided to go ahead with plans to be a unit. How exciting is

    this! Welcome Orchards UMW.

I attended the PNW Annual Conference in Portland. 38 churches brought

262 quilts to this meeting. Thank you to Bonners Ferry, Davenport,

Rockford, Sandpoint, and Spokane Valley for bringing 7 quilts from the

Inland District. I returned with 45 of these quilts which were given to

Hearth Homes, a transitional home for women and children, and

Vanesa Behan Crisis Nursery, a place where a parent can bring their chil-

dren when they are feeling stressed and the child may be in possible danger.

My summer plans have included Mission U for many years and hopefully many

years to come. I took the class, Living as a Covenant Community, from Rev. Neal

Christie, Assistant General Secretary for Education and Leadership Formation with

the General Board of Church and Society at the Methodist building in Washington

D.C. This class was excellent. Neal will be returning next year for the all school

study “What About Our Money?” Bishop Mary Ann Swenson lead the all school

study “Missionary Conferences” and will be returning next year to do the study,

“Mission Conferences with a Difference”. The time with Bishop Swenson was

inspiring. I can’t wait for next year. Please consider putting Mission u on your calendar and joining these

wonderful ladies next year in Ellensburg, July 13-16, 2018!

    Interpretation

As the UMW year draws to a close, I'm thinking about the tasks that we need to complete before the UMW Annual meeting in Spokane on October 13-14. My tasks for E&I are to complete the Mission Today survey. The Inland District had 12 Units complete and submit their accomplishments. Five Units earned a Gold Star and seven Units reached Silver Star status. Meeting these criteria show all the effort and dedication that UMW have toward mission work. Great work Ladies. Blessings, Linda Hansen Inland District E&I

News from your Inland District Treasurer Charlene Mullis The end of the year is approaching fast. Third Quarter money is due Sept. 5th and Fourth Quarter money is due Dec. 1st. I am very happy to report that I have received 2/3 of our Pledge to Mission. Now that is exciting. With what I have projected will come in plus what district committee will not spend in their budget we are very close to making our pledge of $30,000. To take us to our goal I am asking each unit if they would consider sending in $5 or $10 per UMW member. The Deadline for the year will be Dec. 1st so that I can close out my books and Marilyn Reid, our conference treasurer, can close out her books for the PNW Conference. For those of you who have computers you can go to the website: www.unitedmethodistwomen.org and download the forms needed to send in your remittances. There is also updated information on the Inland District when you go to: www.pnwumw.org. I hope to see you all at the Inland District Annual Meeting in Sandpoint United Methodist Church on September 9th and at the Conference Annual Meeting at Spokane Valley United Methodist Church on October 13-14. Charlene Mullis your Inland District Treasurer.

  • We are excited to share the theme of the 2018 Assembly:

The Power of BOLD In 1869, eight women came together to send a woman doctor and woman teacher to India and form the Woman's Foreign Missionary Society. One hundred and fifty years later, that society is the largest faith-based women's mission organization in the world, changing lives for women, children, youth and families down the street and around the globe. United Methodist Women has been, is and will be a unique movement for transformation in our church and world. We have inherited a legacy of bold, courageous action. What will our legacy be? Assembly will help United Methodist Women membership grow and deepen as we respond to God's calling for us today. Our legacy propels us into a bright future in which the goals of justice are in reach. Assembly will also equip attendees for action on our four priority issues: Maternal and Child Health, Climate Justice, Ending Mass Incarceration and Economic Inequality. Attendees will have envisioned, named and committed to the next 150 years for United Methodist Women knowing that the future is you! Assembly will be in Columbus, Ohio, at the Greater Columbus Convention Center. The Assembly dates are May 18-20, 2018. There will be an optional, pre-event Ubuntu Day of Service and a public action on Thursday, May 17th. Assembly officially begins at 9 a.m. on Friday, May 18th with a Community Gathering launch and 150th celebration, followed by the opening of the Experience Hall, pre-registered workshops and another Community Gathering at 7 p.m. The Assembly ends at approximately noon on Sunday, May 20. UMW Reading Program

Now that my eyes are getting better and can read again, I’m looking forward to my goal of reading a Plan IV level. Marsh Aufenkamp, Conference Level Program Resources, had set a goal for each unit to increase the numbers of readers. We achieved that goal. We had 17 complete Plan I, 3 for Plan II, 1 for Plan III and 3 for Plan IV. Our total books were 307.

Total readers who did not complete a plan was 62 and they read 107 books. Excellent work Ladies.

As Benjamin Franklin said: Either write something worth reading or do something worth writing. Reading and Doing are both things that United Methodist Women do well.

I can be reached by phone, 208-620-0158, e-mail: [email protected] or via post to: Linda Hansen 319 E. Knotty Pine Lane, Coeur d’Alene, ID 83815-1800.

Legacy Fund Judy Dirks and Charlene Mullis have joined the Inland District Legacy Team. For almost 150 years United Methodist Women have been giving faith, hope, and love in action on behalf of women, children, and youth around the world. We want to ensure that we are able to continue that legacy. Our foremothers often made truly sacrificial financial contributions. A 1918 article in the Evangel described a poor woman in a large city who walked long distances to save street-car fare that she gave to her local missionary society, and another woman who put twenty-five dollars in the missionary offering. To do this, she went without meat for a year. Dare we falter today? Dare we miss the opportunities and challenges of mission today on behalf of the women, children, and youth of today? No, because God still calls and because others cannot do our work. Inland District has been challenged to give a gift from every unit and a gift from every member. What exactly does

that mean? The challenge means $18.69 per person per year or $7,850 and $150 per unit or $2,400. When the big

number is broken down into its parts, the goal becomes doable. Please go to www.unitedmethodistwomen.org

to donate directly. Response magazine includes an addressed envelope to make giving easier.

If you have questions, please contact me at Marilyn Wudarcki, [email protected] or 208-265-5968.
