EDITORS’

NOTEWelcome to the first issue of the NEW Celsius! As the new editors, we are proud to present to you a bigger and bolder market-first trade publication. It was time for a change, so readers we are your breath of fresh

air. Forget the old ‘journal’ and join the Celsius team as we jolt the magazine into the 21st century.

The past month has gone by in a whirlwind of focus groups, photo shoots and industry interviews. We’ve worked hard to find out what

you want and how best to get the message across. So keep an open mind as you check out

the new products in our Centrefold, read through the industry profiles and give the recipes a go.

Look out for the next issue in two months time!

xoxo the editors

The new Celsius Survey We want to hear what you think of the all-new Celsius magazine.

Post your answers or shoot us an email so we can make the next issue bigger and better.

PRESIDENT’S

NOTE

Welcome to the new Celsius. I know it is a radical change but we have to have a point of difference from all other trade magazines. Under its old format Celsius was not working. We could not attract enough advertisers nor could we make it a “must read”. We had a focus meeting with tradesmen and asked them what they would like to see in the magazine. Look through the pages and you will see the results of what they said.

Now I hope you find it a “must read” and for the advertisers a “must advertise”.

Two new editors will run the magazine. Bernadettte and Lisa are motivated and enthusiastic enough to see the magazine take off. Both are university trained journalists capable of appealing to the younger demographic.

The world is changing and so should Celsius. Business owner/contrators are in their late 20’s and early 30’s, with little spare time to read long articles. This demographic and the tradesman are our new target market.

I hope you like the magazine. Feel free to let me know your thoughts, good or bad. I know some of you will feel that it should have died its natural death, but as I said- times change.

Heatcraft Innovation CentreIn September last year Heatcraft Australia opened its Innovation Centre in Milperra, Sydney. The centre is part of Heatcraft’s initiative to reinvigorate the Kirby refrigerant and HVAC equipment ranges. The latest innovative products on display include:

• Hanbell Screw Compressor Unit

• CO2 Cascade Demonstration System

• Kirby CO2 Evaporator

• Kirby WRC Remote Condensing Unit

Controlled ambient conditions allow the new products to be tested for efficiency and quality.

In addition to product development, the Centre is used for customer visits and industry training. Check out www.heatcraftrpd.com for more info.

Champion’s Power Save OptionsThe compressed-air technology group Champion Compressors have just launched PowerSave Options, a suite of energy-saving systems designed to solve some of your environmental dilemmas. Users customise their air compressor units to suit application needs. Air-filtration and heat-recovery systems can be retrofitted to existing Champion Compressor units or custom-built into new models. Being environmentally conscious can cost you but

now there’s choice - select features that will produce the most suitable energy savings for your machines.

• Shielded separator pre-filters and cyclonic air-intake filters minimising blockages

• Heat-recovery systems that recover waste heat for re-use by the compressor or external processes like water heating

The Champion Compressor motto seems to be ‘no one size fits all’ and they’re determined to supply the most efficient compressors for every job. See www.championcompressors.com.au

Actrol Parts HK Instruments Range Actrol Parts has introduced its new HK Instruments Range of Differential Pressure Gauges. Suitable for over, under and differential pressure readings, the range has high grade ABS plastic casings, easy to read dials and unique filter combinations. The HK Instruments are ideal for monitoring filters, fans, air handlers, clean rooms and laminar flow cabinets. For more info check out www.actrol.com.au

Next Generation Vacuum Technology JAVAC have launched their next generation of high vacuum pumps. Vector pumps are available in a range of flow rates and can be used to back high vacuum pumps like diffusion and turbo so you’ll reach high vacuum within 10-3 to 10-4 mbar parameters. The pumps have an integrated electronic anti-suck-back device isolating the vacuum system that will hold the level of vacuum in the chamber, while venting the vacuum pump in case of power failure. $MONEYMATTERS

Kevin Rudd is

handing out money

like tictacs so make

sure you make the

most of the new

stimulus packages.

What does carbon pricing mean

for your business?

The Rudd Government is set to introduce a

Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme (CPRS) on

1 July 2010. The goal is to charge Australia’s

biggest polluters for the pollution they generate

through the sale of permits and reduce

emissions of greenhouse gases from industrial

processes, stationary energy, transport, waste

and fugitive emissions.

Who is affected?

Not all businesses. Liability will apply to a

person who imports or manufactures more than

25,000 tonnes of CO2-e a year and in some

cases to people who resupply those gases.

Many companies (mainly large corporations)

are also required to participate in the National

Greenhouse and Energy Reporting Scheme

(NGERS).

All companies will be indirectly impacted by

the CPRS:

• Electricity, gas and petrol/ diesel prices will

go up

• Anything where energy is a significant input-

metals, chemicals, plastics, transport will

increase too

• An additional flow on cost of 0.9% on goods

and services is projected

Where will your money go?

The sale of carbon permits will create the

Climate Change Action Fund, providing

financial assistance to households and

businesses for higher energy costs.

TIP: Reducing your greenhouse gas emissions

and energy use will reduce your exposure to a

future carbon capped economy.

WATCH OUT: • Be aware when negotiating contracts

(with energy providers, suppliers and your

customers) that extend beyond 2010. You

may need to assess provisions for adjusting

prices to reflect higher cost structures.

• Keep in mind the financial implications of

climate change (potential fines for non-

compliance, water restrictions, fees and

insurance costs)

Material Safety Data SheetsThere are thousands of chemicals in and around the world today. Avoid health hazards in your workplace with some practical information. Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) provide all the info you’ll need for safe handling and usage of chemicals in the workplace.

Information:

• Product Identification [formulation or chemical name]

• Properties and uses

• Health hazard information

• Precautions for use

• Safe handling information

• First aid instructions

• Methods for safe disposal

The substance manufacturer is responsible for the preparation of the MSDS. In the case of imported chemicals, this responsibility may fall on the importer or local supplier.

If you need help creating a MSDS or think one isn’t quite up to scratch, the National Occupational Health and Safety Commission (Worksafe Australia) has produced a booklet called “Guidance Note for Completion of a Material Safety Data Sheet.” This booklet gives appropriate information on what should be provided in a MSDS, and is available from the Australian Government Publishing Service

Legal RequirementsManufacturers must:

• Prepare, amend and review all MSDS’s

• Give MSDS copies to the repository, suppliers, employers, employees and reps

Suppliers must:

• Give MSDS copies to employer when first supplying or if MSDS’s are amended

• Give MSDS copies to employer, employee, or their rep or the director on request

Employers must:

• Place MSDS copies in the register

• Keep a copy of MSDS close to where the substance is being used

• Keep a register of all hazardous substances with MSDS’s

• Allow employees to inspect the register

OHS

The Sydney Swans player with an

awesome left-foot kick talks to Celsius

about football, fun and fundraisingRyan O’Keefe

What is the hardest part of your training

regime?

It’s all hard. The running is always really painful.

But it’s really rewarding, after a good training

session you feel great.

Why do the players have ice-baths after

training?

It stops the muscles from swelling. After a long

workout, it feels pretty good too.

Are you superstitious? Do you have a pre-game

routine?

I wouldn’t say superstitious but during the season

the whole team are creatures of habit. We try to

keep things the same.

What do you eat the night before a match?

I always have a big bowl of spaghetti, fresh pasta

and lots of sauce. The carb over-load.

Do you still enjoy a beer with the mates?

During the off-season we almost get to act like

ordinary guys. We go down to the pub and have a

beer with mates.

What’s in your fridge?

Well I’ve got a beer fridge, a wine fridge and a food

fridge. The beer fridge stays empty during the on-

season though!

What sort of air-conditioner do you have?

I don’t have one! Don’t worry I’m getting one when

I renovate. At the moment I’ve just got an ocean

breeze.

You’re the ambassador for the GOAL 4 A GOAL

campaign, how did you get involved?

I wanted to make a difference. If everyone helps

out in a little way, we can make a big difference.

I’m lucky I can use my job to do that.

How can people help out?

It’s simple, just go online and register. For

every goal we make this season, donate

50c or more and the money goes to the

Oncology Children’s Foundation. The goal

is to raise money for cancer research.

Last year the OCF raised $60 000

through GOAL 4 A GOAL and this year

we want to make that $100 000.

The first Celsius reader to sign up for GOAL 4 A GOAL at

www.swansgoals.com.au

will receive a Swans football signed

The Celsius team had a ‘speed date’ with

Rapid Chill’s Managing Director Jim Stavris.

1. If you could change three things about your business what would they be?

A. More leisure time for employees who genuinely have a go!

B. Remove the pressure of callouts and mobile phone access, go back to what it was

in the old days when you could call people back after work or first thing the next

day and the world did not end.

C. Find a way to screen the jobs so the ‘prima donna’ mechanics can be assigned to

all of the disliked jobs!

2. Where do you see Rapid Chill in twenty years time?

I am currently in Beijing after visiting the China Refrigeration exhibition and I believe in

twenty years time we will all be installing prepackaged units manufactured in India or

China to Australian/American standards. The emphasis is certainly on packaged units as

3. Any innovations in mind?

My innovation will be to use less electricity in refrigeration systems, engineer for a

A leak can affect the entire performance of the system and with these checks you’ll make sure there’s nothing slipping past. Is the system correctly charged? This is one of the most commonly asked questions by technical advisors and one of the hardest to answer correctly. The technician’s usual answer is the operating pressures are about right. This is NOT the correct answer. To check a critical systems charge we need to know two things:1. The type of metering device fitted and2. The refrigerant type used For critical charged systems, such as systems operating with capillary or accurator type RMD’s, the best option is to charge the system using scales, then weigh the charge in. Otherwise, using the operating evaporator and suction line superheating the accumulator is the next best indicator. With normal operating pressures, superheating should be at 6K.For pure and azeotropic refrigerants such as R22 or R507, you can use the system sight glass as one indicator of charge status. In good conditions, with clear sight and normal operating pressures, the condenser subcooling should be at approximately 5K when the system is correctly charged. Systems charged with a zeotropic refrigerant, (R410A or R404A) disregard the sight glass, as flashing can be present under normal full charge operating conditions due to fractionation issues.Non-critical charge systems use electronic expansion or TX valves, LSF and other similar types of RMD’s. For these use condenser subcooling to determine if the system is correctly charged.

Superheat Values- getting them right

As a professional, you have two choices whenworking with refrigerants. You can take pride in yourwork and act responsibly, or you can be irresponsible.

Released refrigerants destroy the ozone layer and cause global

warming–it’s like giving the world a bad hangover. Refrigerants

are invisible, so you can’t see the negative impact of turning the

valve and letting the gas escape into the air. But the damage is

done. So think before you turn the valve. Do the right thing by

collecting and returning non-flammable and non-toxic refrig-

erants. It’s a straightforward procedure and RRA is here to help.

Be rewarded financially for improving the environment. RRA

gives you a rebate for each kilo of refrigerant you collect and

deliver to wholesalers.

Commonwealth Government funding through the Australian Greenhouse Office supports this project.

How and where you assess the superheat

values will vary with the system type.

Domestic refrigerator with the accumulator at the evaporator outlet:

expect a frostline to the accumulator inlet and approximately

6K superheat.

Residential air conditioner: superheating will occur from the

evaporator, down the suction line to the inlet of the accumulator.

Systems fitted with electronic metering devices will have lower

operational superheats due to faster response times and can control

a lower superheat setting. This results in an evaporator with a wetter

internal surface area, giving better heat transfer and more thermally

efficient coil and system.

The measurement of subcooling and superheating is also an issue

when working with high glide zeotropic refrigerants (R407C, R409A).

The current P/T charts used for service work don’t show the two

relationships required for accurate work with high glide zeotropic

refrigerants. They show the saturated vapour pressure/temperature

relationships, not dewpoint (vapour) and bubble point (liquid) pressure/

temperature relationships. These values are required for accurate

superheat and subcooling calculations as they take into account the

effect glide has on the saturation pressure/temperature relationship in

the condenser and evaporator.
