This engaging and educational program is open to students entering grades 9 – 12 in the fall. Students may attend a half-day program of academic classes or a full-day, which includes a job internship. In the morning, students are immersed in the themes of novels or short stories. Summer classes are designed to help students to focus on strengthening basic skills through an academic theme while using the arts to reinforce concepts learned. Skill areas include reading, organizational study skills, writing, and mathematics presented in a lively and creative setting.

An extended English period includes reading and analyzing text and then enhancing comprehension through art and other hands-on, experiential activities. The double math period strengthens and refines students’ abilities in mathematical decision making as well as financial literacy, and activities are connected to the summer theme and to independent living.

Students may earn Student Service Learning (SSL) hours while participating in supervised job internships. Students may assist in TLC’s Lower-Middle School Summer classes, work in placements located near The Katherine Thomas School, or participate in entrepreneurial business projects. After a brief lunch period, the afternoon internship runs from 12:30 –3:00 pm. Both half day and full day programs include time for lunch.

Interaction Groups are led by licensed professionals in occupational therapy,

speech-language pathology, and psychology with the assistance of other mental

health professionals, special educators, and therapy assistants. Each child’s needs

are addressed through a treatment plan based upon the child’s individual profile

and meaningful activities. Based on The Developmental, Individual-Difference,

Relationship-Based model (DIR®), activities utilize each child’s own interests

to enhance engagement and participation during individual, small and whole

group activities.

Interaction Groups meet for 2 to 2 ½ hours per day, and children may be enrolled for two or more sessions per week. Summer session

is seven weeks and begins June 24. Current speech-language and occupational therapy evaluation reports are required for application

and admission. Each child will be screened to ensure our group meets his/her needs. Limited financial aid may be available to

qualifying families.
