Do they run straight and smooth, not buckled or rubbing againstanything, are all the spokes present and tight?

Are they pumped up hard, do they have a good tread without cutsor bulges?

Does it run smoothly?

Can you get all the gears easily, without the chain jumping off?

If you plan to cycle at night, do you have front (white) and rear (red)lights and a rear red reflector, are they clean and do they workproperly? Wheel and pedal reflectors and a front white reflectorare also good to have.

Check your bike and make sure it is safe.If there is anything you cannot repair take it to a bicycle shop.

ways that benefit their health and the environment. The charity

is behind many groundbreaking projects including the National

Cycle Network. Over 10,000 miles of safe and attractive cycling

Luton Borough Council offers National Standard cycle

training:

: For most age groups and all experience levels

: By qualified and Nationally Accredited cycle trainers whoare police checked

: Training tailored to suit anyone's needs -

- experienced cyclists, looking to improve your techniques

in rush hour traffic

- complete beginner (adult or child) wishing to learn to

ride a bike

- train individuals and groups

- times, dates and locations of training to suit you

- bike mechanics and maintenance training is also on offer

we have the right course for you.

To take part in the training all you need is a road-worthy bike.

You will be taken through the control skills, which will assess your

ability to use and control the bike effectively and then progress on

to the next part of the course on the road. The time spent on

each section of the course is decided by the trainee – the

instructor will move on to the next stage when everyone is

confident in the current section.

Cycling and the law

A cyclist must exercise due care and attention at alltimes, and obey the Highway Code, including trafficsigns and traffic signals.

✓ You CAN cycle in the dark and in wet foggyconditions, but you must use a white front light anda red rear light and keep at least three metresbetween you and the vehicle ahead. It isrecommended that you wear reflective clothing

✓ You CAN cycle on bridleways and byways(unsurfaced tracks) but on these you must give wayto walkers and horse riders

✓ You CAN cycle on canal towpaths but a BritishWaterways Permit is required (tel: 01923 201120or email: [email protected])

✓ You CAN cycle on cycle tracks and in bus lanes ifthe lane signs include a cycle symbol

✓ You CAN cycle on designated cycle paths which canbe found on Forestry Commission land, in urbanareas and disused railways

✗ You CANNOT legally cycle on a pavement or afootpath unless there is a right to do so

✗ You CANNOT legally cycle on open land withoutthe permission of the landowner.

Code for cyclists

: Be polite and courteous to other road users,pedestrians and horse riders, including giving cleararm signals to indicate direction of travel

: Ensure your bicycle is mechanically sound and fit abell. Regular maintenance will save expensive repairbills. Check your brakes, tyres and chain beforeevery ride (see “your bike” section)

: It is recommended that you consider wearing acycle helmet. Choose a helmet with a BritishStandard, or equivalent, and make sure it fitscorrectly before use

: Wear bright or flourescent clothing during the dayand reflective clothing at night

: On shared cycle tracks where pedestrians andcyclists mix, make pedestrians aware of yourpresence, give them plenty of room and be preparedto stop and dismount if necessary

: Use your bell or call out a greeting wheneverapproaching other cyclists or walkers from behind -remember, many people are hard of hearing orvisually impaired; don’t assume that they canautomatically hear you approaching

: On segregated cycle tracks where there is a whiteline or kerb dividing pedestrians and cyclists, pleasekeep to your side of the dividing line and keep tothe left of the cycle track when cyclists areapproaching from ahead

: On narrow, busy roads, ride in single file and onother roads never more than two abreast

: Look out for hazards such as sudden descents,bends, pot-holes, mud, loose gravel and glass

: Don’t stop on bends or narrow bridges and beespecially cautious at junctions, blind bends andentrances

: Don’t carry heavy shopping bags on your handlebarssince they can interfere with your steering andbalance

: Be alert and anticipate other road users andpedestrians who may move out in front of you

: If you are unsure or feel threatened, find a safe placeto dismount and walk.

To help reduce the risk of having your bicycle stolen, keep itsecurely locked.

\ Lock the frame and at least one wheel to something solid andtake any removable parts with you

\ Invest in a good quality lock. Spending 10% of the value of yourbike on a bike lock is recommended

\ Park your bike where it is visible to passing pedestrians

\ Do not leave your bike where it would become an obstacle orhazard to pedestrians.

\ Mark the frame with your postcode and record appropriateinformation about your bike such as make, model, etc – thiswill assist the police in tracing the owner

\ You can insure your cycle as part of your household policy

Casual Cycle Trainers to joinour Cycle Training Team

Can you cycle confidently on theroads? Can you communicate wellto others and want to share yourenjoyment of cycling?

Flexible working hours –days, evenings, weekends to suit.

Cycle Training is available to schools, to groups and to privateindividuals by LBC’s Cycle Promotion Team. We need newcasual staff to coach children and adults in cycle training usinga safe, enjoyable, purposeful approach, communicating clearinstructions and guidance. You will need to be a regular,confident on-road cyclist and have a roadworthy cycle to usefor training. Some experience of working with children andadults in a working, group environment is essential.
