HistoryTai’an is one of cradles of Chinese civilization. The existence and

development of human beings here dates back to more than 500,000 years ago. People in Xintai, a county-level city of Tai’an, entered into the stage of Homo sapiens 50,000 years ago. The brilliant Dawenkou Culture germinated in this area 5,000 years ago, which is a landmark in the history of Chinese civilization.

For primitive worship of the sun and great mountains, the sacred Mount Tai has been the object of an imperial cult for nearly 2,000 years. Ancient emperors offered sacrifices to heaven and earth on the mountain when they

were enthroned, praying for peace and prosperity. Enshrined by such worship ceremonies, Mount Tai has attracted believers of Buddhism and Taoism, men of letters and celebrities whose residences and tours left behind numerous historic relics and made the mountain a world-renowned treasure as a house of history and culture.

Located at the foot of Mount Tai, the city of Tai’an was established in the late Tang Dynasty (AD 618-907) and has developed gradually as Chinese emperors made pilgrimages to the mountain.
