The elliptical Linga, the
abstract symbol of Shiva, fromwhich it derives its nomenclature,Shivalinga, is the most commonrepresentation of Ishwara inHindu temples.
With the recent excavationand restoration of the 2,000-year-old Someshwara temple atLakshmeshwara in Gadag District, one of the rarest aspects of Shivahas been unearthed anywhere inthe country.
PULIGERE UTSAV 2016
2
Ancient Indian thought holdsthat when un-manifest energybegins to manifest itself, the firstform is always the Linga. Not onlyhas this symbolism been given ago-by in the entire Someshwaratemple complex, the veryrepresentation of the main deity,Shiva, is in the form of an image, which is uncommon in itself.
Although inscriptions saythe deity is “SwamyambhuSomeswhewara”, which isidentified with the Shivalinga, the main deity here has Shivasitting on the Nandi, along withParvathi, his consort.
The only temple in Karnatakato have such an image of Shiva, intertwined with Nandi, withParvathi astride behind him, couldbe construed as representative ofthe Shiva-Shakti
Ardhanaeeshwara principleitself. Such is the uniquenessof the deity.
Excavated and brought toform by the ArchaeologcialSurvey of India through thelargesse of Infosys Foundation, the temple found itself as a hostfor a cultural event in March last.
The second edition ofPuligere Utsav will be held atthe Sri Somehwara temple,Lakshmeshwara, Gadag District, from January 6, once againbringing some of the finestartistes to a regional stagewith national status.
Bigger and better than lasttime, the Utsav will feature over130 artistes, most of them drawnfrom the North Karnataka area,to ensure regional participation.
3
The Utsav had presentedabout 120 artistes last year.
The three-day event willfeature artistes such as MarutiBhajantri (shehnai), KaivalyaKumar Gurav (Hindustan vocal),Shrinivas Joshi (sitar), GanapatiBhat Hasanagi (Hindustani vocal),Jayateerth Mevundi (Hindustanivocal) and Mohasin Khan andRaghunath Badi in a sitar and flutejugalbandi.
Natyadeep Cultural Team,Sirsi, Nritya Niketana, Udupi,Nrutyanjali Nrutya Samsthe,Pune, and Bharatanjali Academyfor Performing Art, Davangere, are among the dance troupes whowill perform.
The 2000-year-oldSomeshwara temple, archaeologically excavated by the
Foundation, belongs to the schoolof Chalukyan architecture, thehuge temple complex housingmany smaller ones, Shiva beingthe presiding deity.
Historically, Lakshmeshwarais known for its rich cultural andliterary history traditions. Jainreligion and culture too flourishedin the region.
The Utsav drew thousandslast time, and is being held for thesecond time due to publicdemand, made to the templetrustees by villagers, as this wasexpected to woo tourists also.
The Pallakki Utsav of LordSomeshwara with Mela Kolata bySri Virupkshappa G. Guranavarand troupe will be a highlight ofthe Utsav, the illumination of theentire temple complex adding tothe festive air.
4
Concerts of morning ragas onall days will herald the day’sfestivities, just as it did last year.
The Sri Someshwara TempleTrust successfully organized theevent earlier this year, as well asthe Pallakki Utsav, involving thepublic, drawn from nearbyvillages.
Landscapes ofLakshmeshwara, an artistes’camp sponsored by theKarnataka Lalithakala Academywill capture the environs ofLakshmeshwara on canvas.
Infosys Foundation seekspublic cooperation in keeping thetemple and its surroundings cleanand hygienic, as the sanctity of theUtsav will be maintained, besidesthat of the temple.
The focus of the Utsav isto encourage artistes from theregion, especially those whohave remained there to practicetheir art.
That Lakshmeshwaracould turn into a touristdestination, given the historicimportance and beauty of theSomeshwara temple, is afallout expected of the Utsaveventually.
Bhavan’s Bengaluru Kendrais as usual, supporting the entireevent with the cooperation of thevillage authorities and the templetrust.
Admission to all events isfree.
