The artists’ proposal is attached below: 12 West Main Street/Tortilla Flats Legacy Mural Proposal July 2017 We, Moses Mora and MB Hanrahan, are designing and will be seeking PAC and Historical Preservation committee approval for a mural on the east facing exterior wall of the historical 1903 building at the corner of Ventura Ave. and Main St., (The Feraud Building). The building is owned by the Addison Family Trust. The owner is in support of this mural, and is currently priming and repainting the wall, anticipating the eventual mural, and is prepared to submit a letter stating their support for and sponsorship of the project. The mural will contain images based on archived photographs of Tortilla Flats buildings, businesses and residents-focusing on sites in the West Main St./ Ventura Avenue area. The mural will also reference the diaspora of displaced Tortilla Flats residents, who moved up Ventura Avenue. We will feature composite imagery of families working seasonally in the walnut and apricot orchards in the North Avenue farmlands.

The 1903 building itself served the Tortilla Flats residents; housing, at various times, Feraud's bakery, a market, and a barbershop (eventually owned by Phil Marquez). Drawing stylistically from both the original Tortilla Flats mural (1993) and the Figueroa underpass 2008 recreation, our new mural design will position the individual scenes between the windows and doorways on the wall, preserving the 1903 architectural design. Referencing graphic novel style layout, and the historical tradition of painting huge advertisements on the sides of buildings, each historical vignette will be accompanied with descriptive narrative in both Spanish and English. This was a very effective element of the original mural, as people “self-guided” themselves along the art, and become instantly educated to Tortilla Flats history through the mural. The images will be colored in as sepia tone, blue print, or hand-colored photos. Time line and process: We will be painting the mural with acrylic paints, on Polytab material, and affixing the mural panels to the wall with acrylic gel. As it is a very ambitious project, upon approval, we will be completing areas of the mural in our studio, and then affixing panels as completed. We are planning a 10 year anniversary celebration of the Tortilla Flats/Figueroa project in 2018. This 1903 building/ Tortilla Flats mural will be part of the celebration. A working list of images to be included so far: Phil Marquez barber shop interior, antique barber pole, El Adobe Viejo, Wo Hing Hand Laundry, Walnut/Apricot pickers, Feraud Bakery, Union Ice Factory, Las Palmas Chile Factory, Nehi Bottling Co., Prossers Bakery, Ortega's Tortilla Shop, and the interior of Bennie's Market...and more!
