From the Headmaster

Dear Parents

Cranbrook was founded in order to uphold the great tradition of liberal education and continues to do so by instilling, and supporting the development of, academic rigour. We encourage our students to be creative, diligent, self-disciplined and actively involved in all that they undertake.

Cranbrook cherishes balance and offers rich co-curricular opportunity and exceptional pastoral support. Boys are known and understood as individuals: there is scope for eccentricity as well as respect for difference. We believe in the qualities of school sports but also in the enduring value of the arts and of service to those who are less privileged than we are.

Great teachers change lives, enrich possibilities, point to new horizons and enable young people to navigate by the stars. We continue to attract innovative academics who want to work in an environment that epitomises integrity, solidarity, responsibility, diversity, compassion and respect.

Above all we believe in people and their capacity to make this world a better place and in drive to make the most of their gifts. In every sense the School is true to its motto Esse Quam Videri, ‘to be rather than to seem to be’, and this resonates through all that we do.

We hold a series of Open Days throughout the year and I do encourage you to make an appointment to see what our School has to offer, and how we can provide your children with the necessary skills and confidence to help them embrace the challenges of the future.

I look forward to meeting you and welcoming you to our School.

Mr Nicholas Sampson

The School

Overlooking Sydney Harbour, Cranbrook School was founded in 1918 through the efforts of a group of community leaders who saw the need in the Eastern Suburbs for an independent school with a liberal curriculum based on the traditions of the Anglican Church.

Today, Cranbrook has approximately 1400 students, with a commitment to keep the number of Senior School students under 1000. The School also operates two co-educational Pre-schools at St Mark’s and St Michael’s churches in Darling Point and Vaucluse respectively.

Although Cranbrook is not academically selective, academic excellence is valued and encouraged with the School having a strong academic record.

At the same time, Cranbrook aims to unlock each boy’s potential and to develop his strengths by providing a well-balanced education. In keeping with the School’s mission, this is achieved:

– intellectually: by encouraging a spirit of enquiry which develops learning skills and mental discipline

– culturally: by developing an aesthetic appreciation of the visual and performing arts

– physically: by developing coordination, athletic skills and a long term interest in participating and competing in sport

– emotionally: by developing social skills and the ability to operate in academic, sporting and leisure groups

– spiritually: by using the framework of Christian teaching to encourage each boy to develop a personal faith and a strong sense of ethical behaviour, while recognising that each boy must live with whichever faith he chooses.

Participation in sport is compulsory for Cranbrook boys as it provides valuable lessons in striving, losing and winning, while building teamwork.

St Mark’s and St Michael’s Pre‑schools were established in 1944 and are co-educational, community-based Pre-schools.

Both Pre-schools are licensed by the Department of Community Services and enrol 40 boys and girls aged three to five. Children at both Pre-schools may attend two days (Thursday, Friday), three days (Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday) or five days (Monday to Friday), subject to availability.

The Pre-school teaching staff is made up of a Director, a teacher and two childcare workers. Music and Visual Arts teachers also run regular classes during the year.

The philosophy of the Pre-schools is based on the belief that parents and staff can work together to provide the best possible foundation for a child’s growth and development.

Early childhood is the formative period of a child’s development. During these years, language, skills, attitudes and concepts are developed within each individual child.

One of the Pre-schools’ major functions is to prepare the children for the next stage of learning: Junior School. Readiness for school is not just a case of being ready cognitively and linguistically, but also socially, physically, spiritually and emotionally. Our Pre-school programs help children to develop the broad range of skills they will need to take that next step.

Research has repeatedly shown that children in the years before school learn best through structured play. This approach underpins our programs at both Pre-schools.

Educational activities are provided to stimulate imagination, creativity, decision-making, and the development of language and expression. Emphasis is placed on each child as an individual and the nurturing of positive self-esteem in order for each child to reach full potential.

The Pre-schools are licensed to operate between the hours of 8.45am and 2.45pm, and follow Cranbrook’s four term year.

Cranbrook’s Junior School is located at Rose Bay less than two kilometres from the Senior School at Bellevue Hill. Designed by renowned architect Alec Tzannes and opened in 2012, Cranbrook’s Junior School is truly a School in a Park. The facilities reflect the main educational underpinnings of Cranbrook’s Junior School teaching and learning – the Reggio Emilia philosophy and the International Baccalaureate Organisation’s Primary Years Program (PYP).

The Junior School caters for boys from Kindergarten to Year 6 and has an enrolment of 468 boys across the seven Year Groups. The design of the buildings provides Year Group modules, each module comprising three classes. There are 20 boys in each class, Kindergarten to Year 2, and 24 boys in each class Year 3 to Year 6.

11

Overall Approach and Academic ProgramThe Junior School provides a nurturing educational environment that promotes boys’ self‑confidence and builds on their natural enthusiasm for learning by developing their full potential intellectually. Boys are encouraged to develop consideration for others, independence and a sense of responsibility.

The introduction of the PYP program has enriched the teaching and learning at Cranbrook. As a consequence, the curriculum set down by the NSW Board of Studies is taught through the framework of the PYP from Kindergarten through to Year 6.

Cranbrook’s Junior School program focuses on the whole child as a inquirer, both in the classroom and the world outside, by integrating traditional subjects with in-depth inquiries into real issues. This approach is consistent with the way boys learn and Cranbrook’s overall educational philosophy.

Classroom teachers are supported by numerous specialist teachers with skills in languages, mathematics, drama, music, physical education, information technology and gifted and talented education.

Class teachers are responsible for teaching English, Mathematics, Human Society and its Environment, Science and Technology and aspects of Personal Development. Specialist teachers hold classes in Art, Music, Physical Education, French, Religious Studies, Visual Arts and Information Technology.

Co-curricular ProgramCo-curricular opportunities in the Junior School include chess, debating, music, robotics and the Tournament of Minds. In some of these areas, such as robotics, Cranbrook competes in national and international competitions.

Sporting ProgramAll boys in Kindergarten to Year 6 participate in physical education sessions each week that aim to develop sporting skills, knowledge and attitudes, as well as fitness. The School looks to develop life-long habits of a healthy lifestyle. From Year 3, boys are involved in inter-school sport under the umbrella of the Independent Primary School Heads of Australia (IPSHA). Such sports include soccer, AFL, tennis and rugby in winter, and cricket and basketball in summer as well as inter-school carnivals in athletics, swimming and cross-country running.

Extra-curricular StudiesExtra-curricular studies are non-compulsory activities which provide opportunities for personal enrichment and range from chess to musical instrument tuition, carpentry to Chinese Mandarin, drama, sailing and effective communication.

Religious EducationCranbrook School is established in the Anglican tradition and, as such, the religious education program provides a Christian perspective. Junior School boys take part in religious studies lessons, regular chapel services and special religious services such as Easter, Founders’ Day and an annual Advent Carol Service.

Parent CommunicationConsistent and thorough parent communication is vital to the education of the boys. Communication channels include the Cranbrook Parent Portal which contains up to date School information relevant to parents, the Cranbrook website as well as School newsletters and email communications from academic staff. There are also formal and informal opportunities for parents and teachers to consult throughout the year and full written reports of student progress are provided at the end of Terms 2 and 4. Boys also share their learning with their parents at the annual student-led conference held in Term 3.

Information and Communications Technology (ICT)The Junior School employs a team of teachers with ICT skills who work in the i-Centre. The i-Centre includes the library, ICT lab and studio, and is dedicated to information, inquiry and innovation. Cranbrook regularly enters state, national and international robotic championships. Robotics emphasises problem solving, team work and computer programming skills.

Gifted and Talented EducationCranbrook employs a team of Gifted and Talented Education specialist teachers. These teachers work as a team across Kindergarten to Year 6 to lead a number of programs aimed at catering for the needs of more able boys. Such programs include in-class support, mentorships, academic competitions and acceleration in some curriculum areas.

Learning SupportThe School provides staffing and other resources to help meet the needs of boys who may need additional assistance. Such support is offered by small group tuition, individual education programs, one-to-one and in-class support.

Teaching and Learning Framework: CurriculumThe Teaching and Learning Framework provides a common language and shared approach for the Cranbrook teaching and learning experiences. The five interconnected principles that underpin this approach have been drawn from a number of Australian state-based and internationally-developed frameworks and targets the essential elements of student learning: attitudes and perception, knowledge and skills, developing knowledge, intelligent behaviours and assessment for learning.

In Years 7 and 8, students study: English, Mathematics, Science, History, French, Japanese, Latin, Music, Visual Arts, Technology,

Drama, Religious Studies, Personal Development, Health and Physical Education. In Years 9 and 10, the compulsory subjects are English, Mathematics, Science, Geography/History, Religious Studies, Personal Development, Health and Physical Education. Students then choose to elect three further subjects which range from Chinese, Japanese, French to Commerce, Latin and Visual Arts courses.

In Years 11 and 12 students must choose an English course and the other subjects offered range from Sciences, Business Studies, Languages, Mathematics, Design and Technology, Drama, Music, Economics, Legal Studies, Photography and Visual Arts.

Co-curricular Program

Cranbrook offers a wide range of co-curricular programs including debating, chess, photography, drama productions and music. Participation in these programs aims to develop skills in leadership, performance, creativity and decision-making. Cranbrook has a strong tradition of drama productions from Shakespeare to the experimental. In addition, boys have opportunities to perform in productions with neighbouring girls’ schools.

SportOn the sports field, Cranbrook is committed to developing the potential of every boy through a wide range of choices. The boys regularly compete in Combined Associated School (CAS) competitions as well as in a variety of traditional fixtures against Great Public Schools (GPS), Independent Schools Association (ISA) and interstate schools.

In summer seven sports are offered: cricket, basketball, swimming, tennis, rowing, sailing and water polo. In winter we offer six sports: AFL, rugby, football, tennis, cross country and swimming. An athletics season is held in Term 3 each year.

Cranbrook is the only CAS school to run a competitive rowing program. Coaching is provided by our Director of Rowing and external coaches, many of whom have national and international experience. Most major sports engage in overseas or Australian tours including football and rugby tours to Argentina, Queensland and New Zealand. Basketball regularly tours the United States and our cricketers have enjoyed playing in South Africa and the UK.

Outdoor EducationEach student in Years 7 to 10 participates in the School’s Outdoor Education Program, Cranbrook in the Field. An additional voluntary out-of-term program is also offered to boys in Year 11. Students are also encouraged to develop their leadership skills through participation in the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Program.

Information TechnologyStudents have access to computers in the IT Centre and the library, as well as the Music, Visual Arts and Technological and Applied Studies Departments. All syllabuses from Years 7 to 10 require the development of IT skills, and teachers ensure that information and communication technologies are incorporated into their programs. Laptops are used to enhance teaching and learning in senior years.

Gifted EducationCranbrook’s gifted education program addresses the needs of students with high academic and creative ability in order to encourage these students to achieve their potential, and to foster their love of learning and enjoyment of School. These programs run in English, Mathematics and Science and provide acceleration and enrichment opportunities. The School enters many academic competitions that involve creative writing, art, languages, mathematics and the sciences. In addition, it enters teams in cross-disciplinary events such as the Da Vinci Program and Tournament of Minds. Gifted students can also attend programs such as UNSW Scientia Challenge Programs, Mathematics and Science Olympiads.

Academic SupportAt times some students require additional support to achieve their full potential. By recognising students’ individual strengths, weaknesses and learning styles, learning support aims to make learning accessible to each student and to assist each student in developing his basic skills across all curriculum areas. Learning support can be provided through team teaching, in-class support, referral to outside agencies and collaborative planning between the School and the boy’s parents.

Spiritual Life Cranbrook School is established in the Anglican tradition and, as such, the religious education program provides a Christian perspective. Students from Years 3 to 11 take part in religious studies lessons which covers biblical literacy, Christian history, world religions and ethics. Students are required to attend regular chapel services and special religious services such as Easter, Founders’ Day and an annual Advent Carol Service.

The designated position of Chaplain has been part of the life of Cranbrook since 1933. Today the School employs an ordained Anglican clergyman as Chaplain. He leads the team of Assistant Chaplain, staff, students and Old Boys who work to minister to the whole School community. The Chaplains are involved in all facets of School life from K – Year 12 as well as in the wider School community.

Whilst the School is committed to the Christian faith, it is also respectful and welcoming of people of other faiths.

Pastoral Care

21

The House System The highly-developed House System is one of Cranbrook’s great strengths and is designed to promote an environment in which students feel known, safe, valued, engaged and purposeful. A student’s House is essentially his home in the School. It is the place where he leaves his belongings and begins and ends his day. It is part of his identity and part of what distinguishes him.

The House system complements classroom pedagogy, specific welfare policies, co-curricular activities, learning support, counselling services and religious education.

Each House has its own knowledgeable and caring adult mentors and role models for the boys in its care. The twelve Houses,

ten Day Houses and two Boarding Houses, form the structure through which the School provides individualised care, personal guidance and character development experiences for each student.

Houses are vertically structured and provide opportunities for students to mix with each other in formal and informal settings. Older students learn to care for, and encourage and support younger students in cross-age tutor groups and through ‘buddy’ and cross-age reading programs. Younger students can identify mentors and role models, and strong bonds of friendship and support develop between students of similar and different ages.

Page 24:  · Pre-school to Year 12 ... Group modules, each module 20 boys in each class, ... carpentry to Chinese Mandarin, drama, sailing and effective

22

Boarding Houses Cranbrook’s student body is made up of both live-in boarders and ‘day boys’ who return to their family home at the end of each day.

At Cranbrook there is no separation between boarding students and day students – the Cranbrook School community is seamlessly united and works together as one. All boys are equally and actively involved, and share fully in the busy and stimulating life of the School.

There are two Boarding Houses, Rawson and Street, which together care for approximately 100 students. By keeping numbers to 100, this ensures the boarding students do not feel lost amidst a larger number of other boarders, but not too small that they feel like they are in the minority within the School. Boys can board from Year 7 until Year 12. Cranbrook boarders come

from diverse backgrounds, from rural Australia and indigenous students, to students from across Asia to Europe.

Each House is led by a Housemaster who lives on site and is supported by four resident Tutors. A registered nurse lives on-site and looks after the health needs of the students.

For those students who choose to board the experience provides the boys with a strong, supportive home in an educational environment. Many past boarders claim that boarding helped prepare them for their future challenges. Many former students have spoken highly of the important study skills and discipline they learned during their years of boarding and how well the experience equipped them for post-secondary and vocational success.

The House System continued Houses honour and strengthen their traditions and celebrate their identity through social gatherings, trivia and cultural evenings, assemblies, Chapel services and participation in inter-House competitions. In this way each student can identify with, and feel connected to, his House.

Cranbrook continues to attract academics who epitomise the Cranbrook ethos of believing in the individual and who strive to change the lives of their students by instilling integrity, responsibility and compassion.

Cranbrook is committed to the professional development of its staff. High quality professional learning is one of the cornerstones of an effective school. It enables staff to develop the skills and knowledge they need to improve their practice and is central to improving our boys’ learning.
