Veter-an gunner Almond Vosotros, theTaft quintet’s most dangerousperimeter threat, literally shot LaSalle back into games thatseemed already lost. He wasmost likely to hit a three whenthe team needed it the most.Then there was versatile rookieforward Jason Perkins. The 6’3”Minnesota native combinedstrength underneath with savvy

and a surprising outside shot.The two revelations were dif-ferent stories on their own. JeronTeng’s toughness had been ques-tioned last season but he becamean unstoppable force this year.Pinballing from one defender tothe other, Teng played tough andhit key baskets, becoming a greatscorer who could also hit his foulshots. To many the taciturn Sauler was an unknown, but he hadbeen coaching since the late1990s. He understood that theteam needed to mesh and that’s

what the Green Archers did inthe second round, going unde-

feated all the way to the Finals, where they stood as the numbertwo seed, quite a turnaroundfor a team that almost missedthe Final Four.

In the Finals, the Green Archers were matched up withthe University of Santo TomasGrowling Tigers, the losing finalistfrom season 75. Jeron’s brother,the gritty gunner Jeric Teng led a

veteran squad that included 6’6”strongman Abdul Karim, 6’3”

shooter Aljon Mariano and 6’4”

wingman Kevin Ferrer.Having also fought back

from near-elimination, theTigers sought to reclaim themagic that coach Pido Jarenciochanneled when he led the

Tigers to the title in 2006, hav-ing already made history this year by being the first fourth-seeded team ever to upset thenumber one seed, the NationalUniversity Bulldogs.

But the Green Archers hadhit their stride in that importantsecond round. Things looked abit dicey when the Tigersstunned the Green Archers inGame 1 73-72.

But the LaSallians confident-ly put away Game 2, 77-70, andone had the feeling that the ti-tle was now La Salle’s to lose.Game 3 was a rollercoaster rideof a game, featuring a blisteringUST run and then an evenfiercer DLSU comeback, a com-mon element in La Salle’s post-season run. Into overtime, thetwo teams went toe-to-toe butJeron Teng earned the FinalsMVP trophy by willing theGreen Archers to their first titlesince 2007, 71-69.

Amid the jubila tion over the

underdog Green Archers’ res-urrection was the realizationthat this might not be a one-off performance. A La Salleteam will return next seasonalready fully loaded and with

more experience. Add to thatthe prospective return of An-drada from injury, the additionof Cameroonian big man BenMbala and the expected arrivalof La Salle Green Hills starKobe Paras, and you get a DeLa Salle team that should bebetter than this year’s almost-unbeatable championshipsquad.

The Green Archers’ secondround rise could easily reflect areturn to regular basketballgreatness for DLSU. In a UAAPthat’s only getting more com-petitive, the Green Archers haveestablished themselves as gen-uinely capable of becoming

what they used to be--and whatteams like UST and Ateneohave become recently—a bas-ketball dynasty capable of win-ning a series of titles before allis said and done. “Uh-oh” mightinstead be what other teams say

Van Opstal minds his hair somuch. The criticisms raineddown like a mad typhoon.

With an overtime win overthe Adamson Falcons to starttheir second round, La Salle fi-nally played the right tune androlled on to a second roundsweep, en route to their nine-game winning run, with the lasttwo at the expense of their bit-ter foe FEU Tamaraws to bargeon to their first Finals appear-ance in five years.

W HEN you’re used to winning, a year is sucha long and agonizing wait for you to getback to the top.

For the De La Salle Green Archers, it was an agonizingfive-year wait. Missing the FinalFour in 2011, they knew thatsomething has to be done.

Conjuangco coming back to thefray, the revamp started withthe entry of bluechip rookieJeron Teng in Season 75.

A y ear after, the signs of apotential champion showed in

the preseason. With a promising young forward in Jason Perkinsand Bacolod sensation Kib Mon-talbo coming into the lineup,the Green Archers looked likean early title-favorite. But losing

for three straight games in anembarrassing fashion endedtheir preseason campaign andforced them to push the panicbutton.

Three weeks before the sea-

nerve-wracking 71-69 Game 3overtime win, with Teng, now

named as the Finals MVP, an-choring the team to victory.

The win was DLSU’s eightmen’s basketball title since join-ing the UAAP in 1986.

Even with their conquest,

Sauler remained stoic. When themedia asked him,‘‘Masaya kaba?,” he answered, ‘‘Okay lang.”

‘‘It’s not about winning theball game, but how we improveon a daily basis. This has been aseason of constant improve-ment. What we tried to work on, even for next year, we’ll try to do better than we did this

year.”Maybe that’s what La Salle

needed -- their method to mad-ness. The deadpanned Saulerpushing the right buttons totake the team to the top oncemore.

‘‘I’m the kind of guy who be-lieves that we need to keep on

improving. You might be at thetop right now but if you don’tkeep on improving, you will gonowhere,” he said.

Maybe Racela was right, notto mention, prophetic. La Salleis indeed the new Ateneo. They are your UAAP Season 76champs, and come next year,beefed up and all, they will bepulling all the stops to reclaimthe title once more.

‘‘We don’t want to change

anything. What is important is we know what we are doingand we’re trying to be better,”Sauler said.

THE ROAD TO GLORY for De La Salle Green Archers head coach Marco Januz ‘‘Juno”Sauler didn’t start as smoothly as planned. In

fact, basketball scribes were unanimous in countingthem out as title contenders when they ended thefirst round with a 3-4 win-loss card.

Coach Pido Jarencio told ahandful reporters in the dugoutafter the UST Growling Tigerslost to the DLSU Green Archerson Game 3 of the UAAP. He saidthis before the people in socialmedia played the blame game

on Aljon Mariano.His voice was hoarse and hiseyes were red. Yet, he managedto share a few jokes with themembers of the press. He re-mained amicable to them, butthere was one question hecould not give a straightforwardanswer: will he return next

year?He said he wasn’t sure and

he still needed to weigh his op-tions on what he will do in thefuture. This is a familiar state-

ment. He’s been pondering on whether or not to quit the teamthe past few seasons.

“Pagod na rin ako sa sitwasy-on ngayon. Nakakapagod um-abot sa ganito,” he stopped inmidsentence. He then made asweeping hand gesture to hisboys as if to say that they came

very close, only to lose it.“Siyempre, sa akin, akala komagandang exit sana.”

This season was emotionally draining for the team. There

were as many lows as there were highs. The worst blow was

losing the last game of the fi-nals. It was enough to make anemotional coach like Jarenciogrow weary.

Under his leadership, theGrowling Tigers missed the Fi-nal Four twice—in 2008 and2010. However, he managed totake them to the semis sixtimes. They went as far as thefinals thrice. They won thechampionship once—on his de-but year in 2006.

He has always been an un-

derrated coach. His wins oftendismissed as lucky wins. It

would obviously annoy him, butit would also fire him up. It

would serve as a challenge andthe punch line for his jokes inthe press room.

He has a knack for spottingand developing talents. His un-der-the-radar recruits would of-ten surprise opponents. He

would also trust his players.That trust would be his baneand his saving grace as a coach.

He kept his emotions incheck for them, too. He was

mad at his players on Game 1for wasting a huge lead on half-time. He was calm and encour-aging to them on halftimes of Games 2 and 3.

He did not shout at them orblamed any of them after theloss. Instead, he stood up andled the team to a prayer. Hegave thanks to his two graduat-ing boys—Jeric Teng and Clark Bautista.

Then quietly, he slipped out

of the locker room.

CONTRASTING FORTUNES

Tengs solid as ever

THE moment was immortalized in photos—Jeric Teng on hisknees, face buried in his hands. With the UST Growling Tigers los-ing to the DLSU Green Archers, he would end his five-year stint in

the UAAP without a championship feels like. It gutted him.He would get up from the floor and walk quietly to the dugout. At the safety of the lock-er room, his voice would echo across the hall-

way as he screams his frustrations out. Whenhe calmed down, he would sit and stareblankly into thin air.

A teary-eyed Kim Lo would be on his right, while a heartbroken Aljon Mariano would beon his left. An inconsolable Karim Abdul wouldstay outside the room. Teng would find his

voice again when one of the school officialsstarted berating his teammates.

‘‘Tama na. Tapos na eh,” he would say withfinality that nobody dared to speak negatively again.

Teng liked to work hard on the court anddetested the blame game. He allowed himself afew minutes to show his frustration, anger anddisappointment, but he always managed tocompose himself.

Teng and Jarencio worked perfect together.Just like his coach, he had a way with words.

“I have no regrets I joined UST. I am aproud Thomasian. Grabe ang suporta nila. Silatalaga ang rason kung bakit kami umabot sa fi-nals,” he said.

He was already a prized recruit since hisrookie year, but he and the rest of his family

were thrown into the limelight when his broth-er Jeron joined the roster of another team.Through it all, Jeric has been magnanimous

with praises to the younger Teng.It is this rivalry and brotherhood that ended

the entire finals series on a perfect note. Jeronhugged his brother after the game. He evenraised his arms and told the press after that hiskuya deserved the Finals MVP award.

“I’m very proud of my brother. I hope heachieves more in the future. Alam niya how

I’m feeling. Yun lang talaga, di niya puwedengibigay sa akin ito,” Jeric said after the game.

He consoled himself with the knowledgethat he already made a major comeback frominjury.

“I was told that di na ako makakalaro therest of the season. The doctors said na tala-gang I’m out. I was so down. Siguro ‘di namasama ang na-reach na naming ang finals.Nothing to be ashamed of,” he said.

to finish the record-ing of my album

Dreaming of You inthe late hours of Oct.31 until early morn-

ing of Nov. 1 [last year]. We heard a voice saying, “It’s you again!” while I was recording my so-lo part. We played itback and it wasclearly recorded along withmy voice. It sounded like atired male voice telling methat I woke him up and thathe had been seeing me there

for days. My producer stillhas a file of that recordedtrack. keeping it for posteri-ty’s sake.

accident in Boracay where Ilost my close friend. A fewdays after, when I got homefrom the funeral, I dialed my phone by mistake. When Isaw the digits pressed, they

were 6-6-6, [which whenread] upside down were 9-9-9—the exact date when my friend died.

a low point in my life, I wokeup screaming from a bad

dream where there were“rewind and fast-forwardscenes” of many bad deci-sions. Even if I ran away from each frame, I was stillbeing chased. It seemed likea camera from a movie hunt-ing me down. As I tried tofree myself from the chase, I

woke up screaming, “Pleasestop!” I opened my eyes andI found myself crying andgasping for air. Wide awake

on the 25th floor of a high-

rise condo in Las Vegas withfloor to ceiling glass windowsall around me, the nightmarecontinued. I heard voices that

got louder and louder. Fromdistorted noises, the soundcleared up like when you fi-nally find the right station ina car radio. What the voices

were saying would make your hair stand. The voicessaid, “Jump! Do it! Jump!” Iasked myself if I was stilldreaming. But regretfully, I

was very much awake. I thentried to scream to drown outthe voices with my own but itdidn’t work. The next thing I

knew, I was standing in frontof the floor-to-ceiling window

with my face pressed againstthe cold glass while my tearskept flowing. I started bang-ing my head against the viewof the Strip but I didn’t know

why. Finally, as I got closerand closer to a very stupiddecision, I screamed, “In Je-sus’ name, stop! I rebuke

you!” And so it stopped!Jed Madela

Weird and spooky havebecome “normal” for mesince I have a very high sen-sitivity when there is a “pres-ence.” But one instance thatreally spooked me was whenI was in Bohol… I was billet-ed in an old house convertedinto a hotel. I was resting

when suddenly my bag, which was on the desk, fellto the floor. I ignored it,thinking it must have been

the wind when suddenly theentire desk moved! I closedmy eyes and tried to sleep itoff but I felt someone put

weight on my chest. I keptmy eyes closed but I feltsomeone breathing on my face. Good thing my managerentered my room at that mo-ment. We immediately trans-ferred to another hotel.

of Iskul Bukol Book 2’s Hal-loween episode in a hauntedhouse in Antipolo City. Thecaretaker was an old lady

who did not talk at all. She just stared at us the wholeday. After each take, we

would preview the scenes tosee if they were good. Whenthe shoot was over, we pre-

viewed the tapes back in thestudio. The tapes were allblank. So we shot anotherHalloween episode in the stu-

dio instead.

H ALLOWEEN is meant for lu-nar-powered creatures likeme. Time to unleash the

“Walking Dead.” We all need a littlescare every now and then. The shivers

down our spine give us a different sort of adrenaline rush. In the spirit of Halloween, Iasked some celebrities about their spookiest expe-riences. It’s the witching hour! Don’t brew what Iwould not brew.
