As most of you are aware our friend and Life member Ken Sheppard sadly died on 16th November 2020. Due to various cir-cumstances we have been unable to cele-brate Ken’s massive contribution to our club.

As many of you know Ken had been in-volved with Risborough Rangers for over 40 years. Like many of us he was drawn into the club as a manager of his son’s team and then became a qualified Refer-

ee. Later Ken became First team Physiotherapist for several seasons providing valu-able support to the management and players.

As a builder by profession he was instrumental along with Pete Boland and Mal-colm Hurst during 1987-1989 in planning and building the clubhouse we have to-day. This wonderful achievement ensured our membership of the South Midland League which later became the Spartan South Midland Football League. As the team progressed to the next level additional work was required in the form of a fur-ther 50 seats, concrete walkways and a perimeter wall either side of the clubhouse the length of the pitch adjacent to the car park. Ken took the lead in all of this work and the club will always be appreciative of the facilities we have today having named the walkway ‘Sheppard’s Way’ which he warmly appreciated.

During this time Ken served as a Committee member and helped Pete Sulston on the gate at home matches for several years until ill health restricted his involvement. He was also a regular supporter at Away matches and formed part of the ‘Red Army’

Our thoughts and prayers go to family members and we are delighted to see you at the game today. We will hold a one minute silence prior to kick-off as a mark of re-spect and a special thank you to Ken for his total skill and dedication in helping to build and establish our club that continues to flourish as you see it today.

KEN SHEPPARD - LIFE MEMBER OF RISBOROUGH RANGERS F.C

We return to the B.E.P today for the visit of my old club Arlesey Town,

I had a fantastic year there which included getting to the first round proper of the F A Cup where we played Coventry City at the Ricoh Stadium, which was one of the most special days in my football career. Like lots of clubs they have had mixed for-tunes since those heady days but it looks like the club are now starting to build an impressive young talented squad that has already recorded some great results and scored plenty of goals, not least beating Leighton Town.

We are in a good position now but I take nothing for granted, this is a tough league and on any given day if you're not focused you get beat. Our performance against Hadley last week was excellent, the pleasing aspect was not the amount of goals we scored, which we'll take, but the way we stayed in the game in those first 15 mins. They are a good side and started really fast and despite that result I think they will be at the top end of the division . Finally we showed some clinical finishing which had been missing in previous games. I was really pleased for Liam who showed what I already knew and that's how good he could be. The forward line we can choose from in Brian Peck, Sam, Liam Marcus and Lol gives me, Paul and Jon some headaches but it's a good problem to have. Everyone will play their part in this marathon.

I was also very pleased with Ben Sturgess performance, he slotted in like he had played with us for years and has already been a really good influence around the dressing room.

We have a tough run of games in October which we'll tick off one game at a time and then see where we are.

Your support is greatly appreciated

Best wishes

Mark

The Blues Season So Far….

Page 6: Todays match is dedicated to the memory of KEN SHEPPARD

The club was established in 1891. They ini-tially played in the Biggleswade & District League, before joining the Bedfordshire County League in 1922. They were runners-up in the league's first season, and runners-up in the subsidiary competition in 1923–24. After finishing bottom of Division One in 1925–26, they left the league before return-ing to Division One for the 1927–28 season. Although they left again after finishing bot-tom of Division One, the club re-joined the league in 1929, this time in Division Two. The club re-joined the (renamed) South Midlands League in Division Two in 1929–30, winning the Division at the first attempt and earning promotion to Division One. However, they were relegated back to Division Two at the end of the following season.

Arlesey won the Division Two title in 1931–32, but were not promoted and Division Two was not played the following season. They returned in 1936, winning a third Division Two title in 1936–37, resulting in promotion to Division One. Division One became the Premier Division in 1947. The club were Premier Division runners-up in 1950–51 and won the division the following season. They retained the league title in 1952–53, but left to join the Parthenon League in 1954, where they played for four seasons. In 1958 they switched to the Senior Division of the London League. After leaving the London League in 1960, the club returned to Division One of the South Midlands League in 1961.

Despite finishing in the bottom three of Divi-

sion One in 1961–62, Arlesey were promoted to the Premier Division. They finished second-from-bottom of the Premier Division the fol-lowing season and were relegated back to Division One. However, a third-place finish in 1963–64 resulted in an immediate return to the Premier Division. In 1982–83 the club transferred to the Premier Division of the United Counties League, which they won in 1984–85. However, rising costs forced the club to resign from the United Counties League in 1992, moving back to the Premier Division of the South Midlands League in 1991–92. The 1994–95 season saw the club win the Premier Division with a record 107 points, as well as beating Oxford City 2–1 in the final of the FA Vase at Wembley Stadium. Following the merger of the South Midlands League with the Spartan League to form the Spartan South Midlands League, the club were placed in the Premier Division North, and following league reorganisation at the end of the season, became members of the Premier Division for the 1998–99 season.

In 1999–2000 Arlesey won the Spartan South Midlands League Premier Division, earning promotion to Division Three of the Isthmian League. Their first season in the new division saw them win the title scoring an Isthmian League record 138 goals with a record 100+ goal difference, earning promo-tion to Division Two. In 2002 league reorgani-sation saw them placed in Division One North. They were transferred to the Eastern Division of the Southern League in 2004, be-fore being moved back to Division One North

Page 7: Todays match is dedicated to the memory of KEN SHEPPARD

of the Isthmian League in 2006. Another move in 2008 led to the club playing in Division One Midlands of the Southern League, which became Division One Central in 2010. The 2010–11 season saw the club win Division One Central, earning promotion to the Prem-ier Division.

In 2011–12 Arlesey reached the first round proper of the FA Cup for the first time, where they lost 3–1 at Salisbury City. They repeated the feat the following season, losing 3–0 to Coventry City at the Ricoh Arena. The club were relegated back to Division One Central at the end of the 2014–15 season after finishing second-from-bottom of the Premier Division.

This season the club are celebrating their 130th anniversary and with a new Chairman at the helm in ex-Premier League striker and former Arlesey Town player Dave Kitson along with Manager Chico Ramos the Blues are looking towards regaining their Step 4 status as soon as is possible.

Rangers travelled to Brickfield Lane on Saturday to face Hadley, the only other unbeaten side in the Spartan South Midland League Premier Division, fully expecting a close encounter and came away with a fine five nil win to push them up to second in the table. It was a fabulous exhibition of finishing from Rangers in what was a far more difficult game than the score-line would suggest, with Hadley always a threat on the break right up until the end of a game played in atrocious conditions. The 'Bricks', who had-n't been beaten at home in a league fixture since 15th December 2018, looked like they may overrun their visitors in the first 15 minutes as Rangers struggled to keep any kind of possession. The home side started with pace and purpose and early on Ferguson fired inches wide. Shortly after, a slower build up ended with an easy save for Jack Brooker in the Risborough goal. Rangers' first attack was 10 minutes into the game as Lewis Patrick's cross was cleared at the near post. Hadley hit back with a wicked cross cum shot just clearing the bar. The visitors gradually settled with Liam Enver-Marum chesting down for Kieran Schmidt to volley harmlessly wide. Next came a Hadley free kick that was easily dealt with by Brooker. Rangers began to threaten as Marcus Wyllie saw more of the ball and his run and low cross down the left saw the ball desperately nicked off the foot of Enver-Marum at the near post. It was a warning and three minutes later Wyllie again from the left played a neat one two with Schmidt before setting up Enver-Marum for a close range finish to give the visitors the lead. Five minutes later they dou-bled their lead. A defence slitting pass by new signing, Ben Sturgess, picked out Schmidt who feinted before hitting a superlative strike with the outside of his left boot into the far corner of the Hadley goal. Next up and a free kick was curled around the Rangers wall and the post as the home side showed they were not done yet. 10 minutes before the break and Rangers' skipper Joel Read headed home a Wyllie free kick only to be ruled offside. The visitors finished the half strongly with Wyllie heading over Sean Coles' cross and moments later the same player burst through to see his strike well saved. The half fin-ished with a Hadley free kick soaring well over Brooker's crossbar.

Rangers began the second period with a good move involving Schmidt, Wyllie and Enver-Marum with the Hadley keeper saving at the latter's feet. 10 minutes into the half some neat play by Hadley saw Josh Urqhuart making a tremendous defensive block, the loose ball smashed high wide and not so handsome. There followed a short spell of pressure from the home side with both Urqhuart and Read in excellent form in the middle of the back line. Rangers almost made it three with Schmidt winning a tackle deep in Hadley territory before hitting the post with a cheeky chip. As the pitch began to suffer from the biblical downpour, with surface water gathering, Risborough took control with Wyllie coming off best in a fifty, fifty just inside the Hadley half before racing away to finish with a super finish. Wyllie was again in the action, crossing to Enver-Marum who headed down to force a save. Three minutes after and Enver-Marum raced clear only to be brought down in a splash of water for a penalty. The striker shook himself off before making it four nil from the spot-kick. A couple of minutes later and it was five when Wyllie's brilliant reverse pass picked out Asher Yearwood whose shot was parried to Enver-Marum to complete his hat-trick. Somewhere at this point Hadley were reduced to ten men due to injury, having used all of their substitutes, but they still wouldn't roll over as Ofori almost scored with a fierce angled shot that whistled past the far post. Enver-Marum could have increased his tally, shooting just wide after cutting in from the left. Rangers new boy, Sturgess almost got on the scoresheet, firing inches wide before Had-ley's Ferguson forced Brooker into a fine save, tipping the ball onto a post after good work from Ofari. With five minutes remaining Brian Haule split the Hadley defence with a fine pass to Enver-Marum, who

set up Coles in front of goal, the winger seeing his effort cleared off the line. Bertie Squire Adams fol-lowed up to shoot, his shot deflected for a corner with Haule's header forcing a low save from the result-ant kick. Brooker then pulled off a decent save before Haule was again unlucky at the other end after twice chipping the Hadley keeper only to see the ball cleared off the line on both occasions.

Rangers' were excellent in front of goal and Enver-Marum showed his class. The back four and Brooker looked solid when the pressure was on but this win was as much to do with the quality in midfield. For-mer Thame United skipper Sturgess had an impressive debut, Schmidt was at his creative best and Alex Kedzierski won first and second balls all over the park to stifle the Hadley midfield. Rangers are at home next Saturday against one of manager Mark Eaton's former clubs, Arlesey Town, a team that haven't been beaten on their travels in the league this season and have picked up a point at both Leighton and Harpenden, so Rangers will not be allowed to be complacent as they hope to continue their good start.

Rangers Man of the Match: Liam Enver-Marum. Led the line well and chased lost causes. Looked dan-gerous every time he was involved and showed his quality in front of goal with a fine hat-trick.

RECREATION Ground, Aldershot. Circa 2001-02 season. I had made my way pitchside, waiting for Aldershot Town manager George Borg to emerge back from the tunnel for post-match interviews.

Behind me were two young boys, aged between four and seven I’d say, kicking a football between them on the pitch (don’t tell the groundman, I’m not sure they were allowed).

I knew at the time one of the lads (the younger one I think) to be the son of Stuart Cash, the Aldershot Town assistant manager. He had come along with his Mum to cheer on Dad from the directors’ box – I’m guessing his first football memory.

That young boy is now, of course, Matty Cash, Aston Villa’s talented young right-back, signed from Nottingham Forest for a cool £16 million just over 12 months ago.

These days, having helped Terry Brown guide AFC Wimbledon into the Football League, Stuart is enjoying the lap of luxury at Premier League grounds up and down the country fol-lowing his son in a similarly proud show of family loyalty and support.

Matty’s plight to the very top got me thinking about players who were brought up in the Non-League way. Yes, there’s the Jamie Vardys, Andre Grays and Nick Popes of this world who earned big moves to the top, but how about those with a professional grounding but nurtured off-the-field from a grassroots background.

Indeed, Matty doesn’t have to look far to see that he’s in good company. His Aston Villa teammate Tyrone Mings is another taught the Non-League way from his father Adie, who spent six years in charge at Chippenham Town.

It was there where Tyrone was spotted by then Ipswich Town boss Mick McCarthy, who spent £10,000 to bring him to the Championship. The rest, as they say, is history.

Adie later followed his son into the Premier League and is now a scout at Chelsea.

And how about one of the top-flight’s newest stars, Crystal Palace’s Conor Gallagher? He is the youngest of four brothers with his siblings all having played at Non-League level.

Jake Gallagher, 28, enjoyed a solid career at the likes of Welling United, Aldershot Town and Dorking Wanderers, while twin brother Josh served a number of clubs at Steps 3 and 4, such as Staines Town, Met Police, Leatherhead and Farnborough. Third brother Dan, 24, is current-ly at Dorking Wanderers.

It’s groundings such as these which have completely changed the perception of Non-League football from the upper echelons over the years.

No longer is life outside the professional game seen as a poor relation, a kick-and-rush fest played on a quagmire of a pitch, it’s now a hotbed of playing and managerial talent with a refreshing purity about it.

And if it hadn’t have been for the lure of Non-League and grassroots football then perhaps young Matty Cash might never have got his clear passion for the game.
