Calling All Fancy Writers —by the Third Grade team

Our year begins with the excitement of cursive writing. The kids are thrilled to learn, and the teachers are too!

We begin with the basic strokes. The undercurve, downcurve, slant, and overcurve. Once the strokes are learned, the students have transitioned to writing letters. We’ve learned the

lower case and

, to name a few.

Throughout the year we’ll be working on connecting our new letters, but that takes time. The art of writing cursive is not lost here at Tyrone!

Coming soon in third grade: multiplication facts!

1ST GRADE

Preschool Fun —by Mrs. Chiocco, PreK4 Teacher

In preschool, we are talking all about school! We have had lots of fun exploring our centers and beginning to become authors and illustrators. We have talked a bit about different authors and illustrators, as well. Our main focus was on David Shannon, the Chicka Chicka books, and Pete the Cat. As we move into October, we will begin to talk about fall and Clifford books. We are also looking forward to our field trip to the farm in October!

As part of our America unit students in first grade learned about The Constitution. They talked about what it is, what it says, and who it helps. Students in some classes got a chance to write their own constitution. They discussed what they thought should be included and why. Then, stu-dents worked as a group to create a Classroom Constitution. Of course, all of the students signed it when it was finished. —thanks Mrs. Black

Sing, Listen, Move and Play

—submi ed by Mrs. Estright

Sing, listen, move and play: these four words sum up the components for ele‐mentary music class this year. Throughout the year students will have many op‐

portuni es to sing, listen, and move to new songs that include varied styles and genres of music. Playing classroom instruments is al‐ways a fun thing for students to do. In doing so, they show that they understand steady beat, tempo, rhythm and dynamics, just a few of the musical concepts that are intro‐duced here at TAES. Students in 2nd and 3rd grade will be learning to play the music key‐board as part of their music educa on. Stu‐dents in 4th grade also have the opportunity to play the recorder, a pre‐band instrument that helps prepare them for band instru‐ments in 5th grade. We are excited for anoth‐er busy, musical year here at TAES.

During the month of September, Kindergarteners have been busy learning about farms! Students have learned about animals that live on farms and how they help farmers. We have also been discussing the differences between living and nonliving things. We also discussed crops and how they grow when we read Tops and Bottoms by Janet Stevens. Stu-dents learned that they eat many different parts of plants (leaves, roots, flowers, stems, etc), and in many of the classrooms, students had the op-portunity to try different kinds of vegetables. It has been so fun learning about the hard work that farmers do!

All About Farms —by Mrs. Lindsay McCracken, Kindergarten Teacher

Wri ng Into a New School Year —by Mrs. Fleck, Second Grade Teacher

This year students in second grade have started the new wri ng cur‐riculum called Units of Study by Lucy Calkins. Students are working on cra ing small moments in their lives. Through a writer’s workshop, students have mini lessons, study mentor texts, and consult their classmates in order to bring a small moment to life through their wri ng. The students are becoming “authors” and crea ng their own books. In this picture you see students working with their wri ng partners to edit, revise, and write their own story. Ask your author what their next book will be about!
