Urban Design Laboratory is inviting Ms. Claire Weisz and Mr. Mark Yoes, the founding prin-cipals of WXY architecture + urban design based in New York. As an architect and urbanist, Ms. Claire Weisz has founded the prominent non-profit organization, Design Trust for Public Space on aside, which bridges public and private sector in numerous public space projects including the Highline and Times Square Plaza. This lecture will focus on approaches to public space through experiences in New York and discuss ways to tackle historical public spaces in Tokyo.

クレア・ワイズ女史（Claire Weisz）　クレア・ワイズ女史は建築家・アーバニストであり、建築・都市デザイン事務所WXYを主宰している。マーク・ヨーズ氏含む事務所パートナーとともに、公共空間、構造体、都市を対象とする創造的な活動に取り組んでいる。WXYはニューヨーク建築連盟より、連盟賞、2011 年度新興・実践賞ほか、米国建築家協会、米国都市計画協会等より幾多の賞を受けている。　近年のニューヨーク市内における数々のプロジェクトを手掛けており、アスター・プレイス、スプリング・ストリートの衛生局車庫、ロックアウェイ遊歩道、埠頭２６番ボートハウス・レストラン、バッテリーパークの海ガラス回転木馬、ロウアーマンハッタンの歩道橋、ハーレム地区における歩行者・高架鉄道の動線計画、ブルックリン成長商業・テック区域計画（ザ・ブルックリン・テック・トライアングル）、イーストリバー・ブルーウェイ（イーストリバー航路計画）、連邦政府復興事業リビルド・バイ・デザイン最終選定者（住宅・都市開発局）などが挙げられる。　非営利団体デザイン・トラスト・フォー・パブリックスペースの共同設立者という立場から、タイムズ・スクエア、ハイライン、ブルックリン図書館の利活用等、公共空間の設計・創出活動の一翼を担った。トロント大学卒業ののち、イエール大学建築学科修士課程を修了している。近年までは、コーネル大学建築・芸術・都市計画学科の都市デザイン専攻で教鞭を執った。

マーク・ヨーズ氏（Mark Yoes）　マーク・ヨーズ氏は、WXYの共同設立者であり、２５年以上の建築・都市デザイン領域における実務経験を有している。ライス大学建築学科を卒業ののち、イエール大学建築学科にて修士課程を修了。公共空間、構造体、都市を対象とし、まちに公益をもたらす創造的なデザインに取り組んでいる。クレア・ワイズ女史と共に、1993 年にニューヨーク建築連盟より連盟賞、2011 年度新興・実践賞を受賞している。WXYでは、主に教育環境・施設の設計に携わり、REEDアカデミー、ブロンコス憲章芸術学校、キリスト・ステファン聖保育センター、バッテリー・パークの海ガラス回転木馬の設計業務を担当した。

The Urban Design Laboratory and Public Space Lab invite Jerold Kayden. He is the Frank Backus Williams Professor of Urban Planning &Design at the Harvard University Graduate School of Design. His research and teaching focus on the relationship between law and the built environment and public-private urban development. Among numerous other books, he authored ‘Privately Owned Public Space: The New York City Experience’ and founded ‘Advocates for Private-ly Owned Public Space’ (http://apops.mas.org/), a non-profit organization based in New York City whose mission is to improve zoning-created plazas, arcades, and indoor spaces.

Prof. Kayden’s lecture will provide an overview of incentive zoning and the production of POPS in New York City as well as of the inventory that his team created together with the NYC City Planning Department and the Municipal Art Society. Furthermore, he will share his experience with the recently completed, civil society-based monitoring system for these privately owned public spaces.
