Design Philosophy “Design is the search for a magical balance between business

and art; art and craft; intuition and reason; concept and detail; playfulness and formality; client and designer; designer and

printer; and printer and public.”– Valerie Pettis It is the search for this balance which sparks so much interest and creativity in a designer. Design is a way of life. It is not something that is put on hold and thought about at certain periods of time. It is something that is always around, and something that a designer is always living by. A designer is

unlike anyone else in the world. Designers can genuinely say that there are no set hours for working. This is because a

designer’s brain almost never stops thinking about design. This fact is a major reason why design is so appealing. A large part of being a designer is thinking. Having this freedom to think endlessly is a great gift. Being able to take that freedom and find the magical balance between business and art; art and

craft; intuition and reason; concept and detail; playfulness and formality; client and designer; designer and printer; and printer

and public, is the challenge that a designer uses their gift to overcome.

IA 101:Basic Grid

Structure And Lines

3

Objective: To investigate structure in a composition. To understand the use of the basic grid as a strong repetition structure that is formal, inactive, and visible, while creating an overall pattern with line. Solution: On 8 ½ “x11” bond paper I centered a 6” by 6” grid that was divided up in to 4 rows and 4 columns of boxes. Within each box I created a pattern that would repeat and create a tessellation. I carefully inked all the lines that were used to create the pattern. Each line was drawn clean and precisely.

IA 101: Grid Structure

4

Objective: The objective of this project was to understand texture and its relationship to composition and color on a two dimensional surface. Solution: I instantly thought of the quote that I wanted to use for my project, and the exact images that I wanted. My grid consists of a black and white image of the artist KiD CuDi, who is deep in thought, and the color image is an image captured in deep space by the Hubble Telescope. I cut both images in to grids, and simply alternated images each square of the grid while gluing the squares to a 8½” by 11” piece of Bristol board.

and Color

IA 101: Isometrics in Color

5

Objective: The objective of this project was to create an interesting isometric design that related shapes to space. The use of an isometric grid in designing and laying out the shapes used in the design allows for the subjects to appear as if they are in a three dimensional space. The use of different hues of colors allow for that appearance of three dimensional space to be conveyed more easily. Solution: I created a mirrored and reversed design of square blocks that appeared to be floating in space. The creation of the mirrored images also creates horizontal symmetry within the image. The media I used was black ink markers and colored markers for the color image. Both designs were done on a 8½” by 11” pieces of Bristol board.

7

Section Objective: Given a floor plan and elevation views of a house, hand render a section cut through of the house and poche the floors and walls as well as include a wall detail drawing. Solution: Using precise measurements I hand drafted a section drawing of the house that was provided. I used a poche technique on the back of the final draft to give the floors and walls their solid appearance. I also included an annotated wall detail drawing.

IA 110: Reception Desk

8

Objective: Conceptualize and design a custom reception desk for the office of Siemens Industry Inc. Solution: Using the concept of incorporating the Siemens “S” in to the design, while including elements of gravity through a representative cantilever form drove this project to display a sense of power which is one of the business sectors that Siemens Industry Inc. is affiliated with.

IA 110: Kitchen Floor

9

Plan Objective: Using correct measurements and scale, create a kitchen floor plan with and island in the center of the kitchen. Solution: Using differentiating line weights, I hand drafted a floor plan of a kitchen that contains a refrigerator, stove top, sink with faucet, cabinets, and an island.

11

Perspective Objective: Compose and organize a rendered image of a kitchen perspective. No stray marks or glue or tape. Light is considered with shading and highlights. Counter top has a thickness added to it with a shadow underneath. Solution: I used markers and colored pencils to render a black and white image of a kitchen perspective drawing. I used the light of the sun coming through the window above the sink to give lighted dimension to the rendering.

IA 204: Stacking

12

Letters Objective: Arrange letters within a confined area to create a interesting and artistic display. Solution: Using the three letters of my first name, I placed the letters next to, and on top of each other to create multiple negative spaces within the design. I then emphasized the negative space by using color to display the letters, while adding subtle black ink elements in selective negative spaces to add more interest to the negative space.

IA 204: Marker

13

Letters Objective: Using the marker style of Mike Lin, create a visually pleasing display of letters. Solution: I chose to use my name for this project in order to represent myself and my design style. I chose to use some of my favorite colors to fill the letters, and emphasized the letters by adding thin black ink line to the outlines of the letters. By extending the outlines I emphasized the verticality of the lettering design.

15

Design Objective: Using any elements deemed fit, create a 3-D design of your choice. Solution: I completed this project at the University of Wisconsin- Sheboygan. The project is a working DJ head that can be worn. The head is called Deadmau5 and is based off the famous DJ that goes by that name. Using elements of light and color I am able to light up the eyes of the mouse head and wear it while looking out of its mouth. Each rhinestone on the head was attached by hand to the head.

Art 102: Chair Design

17

Objective: Design a scale model of a custom chair using wood and cardstock as representative materials. Solution: I created my chair called the E-Z Lounger. I wanted to design a chair that was comfortable and compact. Using the underside of the chair as a storage area for the footrest helped to achieve that goal.

Art 102:Abstract Real-

19

Form Objective: Take an existing real-form and reduce it down to its minimal state to convey shape and form using cardstock. Solution: I chose to use the Salisbury Cathedral located in Salisbury, England. I chose to display the form from above to convey the shape of the Patriarchal Cross form that the Cathedral is designed upon. I created the form by using a scaled floor plan of the Cathedral and built it from the ground up.

Drawing

Art 103: Pencil

21

Drawing Objective: Using pencil shading techniques, express light and shadow through an image of your choice. Solution: For this project I chose my favorite image to draw. It is the image of the artist KiD CuDi. I selected to draw this image because of the different lighting elements that are displayed in it. Light reflects off different parts of the face and adds interesting elements such as contours and depth.

Art 103: Ink Drawing

22

Objective: Using ink, create an image displaying depth and texture. Solution: I chose to do a view of Frank Lloyd Wright’s “Falling Water” that displayed all the correct elements needed for this project. Using two vanishing points, I was able to display depth by and shadows on different surfaces. I was able to add texture by rendering the brick and stone displayed in the image.

Art 103: Pencil

23

Volume Study Objective: Using pencil, display contrasts of light and shadow on volumes. The volumes do not need to be real-form and can be abstract. Solution: I used forms that were completely made up to display light and shadow. I used a volumes that resemble many of Frank Lloyd Wright’s “Prairie Style” designs. I chose to leave all the lines that I drew displayed to show the fact that this drawing was done free hand with no assistance from a straight edge.

IA 211:Live/Work Space

25

Objective: Design a living space that also serves as a working business for a newly graduated Interior Architecture major within the shell of an existing building. Solution: This project allowed for each student to design a living and working space for themselves after they graduate. I chose to design my first level as a night club, and my second level as a studio apartment.

Residence Objective: Design a home from scratch for a husband and wife living in Northern Wisconsin along Lake Superior. The husband has Middle Eastern roots and would like to see some respects paid to Middle Eastern design, while also having a strong sense of a contemporary, modern home.

Solution: Hailing to a strong sense of nature was crucial to the success of this design. Using strong curves throughout the home that relate to the winding hills and steep drops that can be seen along the shores of Lake Superior makes the home begin to blend with the natural environment. To create a contemporary feel, there is an emphasis on lateral movement throughout the spaces in the home. Another key contemporary element of the home is the openness of the public spaces on the first floor, and more intimate private spaces located on the second floor. The home also features materials and finishes that contain sustainable attributes as well as two rooftop gardens to provide even further effort to creating an ecologically friendly design.

Objective: Teams of 6 are to be assembled for this project. This project will be conducted with an actual client; The Boys and Girls Club of Plover. Using the accumulated materials and finishes knowledge gained during the semester, observe The Boys and Girls Club of Plover and interview the staff in order to design a newly renovated space that takes in to account the needs of The Boys and Girls Club of Plover as well as sustainability.

Solution: After having the chance to spend a few hours in The Boys and Girls Club of Plover, my team and I were able to distribute the work load amongst ourselves evenly. With my strongest skills being CAD drafting, space planning, and Google Sketchup, I was given the opportunity to collaborate on space planning with my entire team while drafting some of the spaces in The Boys and Girls Club, and was given the opportunity to design and render the entire space in Google Sketchup.
