Product Development & Design Management

Industrial Designer/Design Manager with 17+ years experience in product design & development in both consulting and corporate settings. My work spans many product categories and industries, including: consumer, medical, high-tech, aerospace manufacturing, outdoor sporting goods, and textiles.

In 1997 I joined Intel Corporation where I led Industrial Design and Serviceability of the Enterprise Server product line. In 2003 I joined the Intel start-up User Centered Design Group where I managed the Industrial Design team and later, the interdisciplinary Experience Research & Design Team. UCD was a multi-disciplinary team of user experience researchers, designers, and engineers whose charter was to translate end-user value into tangible solutions that generate business impact for Intel. Currently, I manage the Design of notebook computers for Intel’s worldwide Channel mobile boards business.

As a formally educated Industrial Designer, I have significant experience educating teams and organizations about the value of Design as a core business advantage. I am experienced in promoting the Design Process and Design Thinking to both senior level managers, corporate leaders, and global customers.

Specialties: Industrial Design, User Experience Design, Usability and Ethnographic Research Methods, Heuristic Evaluation, Managing Creative Design Programs, People/Team/Project Management, Project Planning/Strategy, Presentation Skills, Client/Customer Interface, Production support/liaison

Product Development is always a multi-disciplinary affair requiring articulate coordination of many resources. As a seasoned Design Manager and product development leader, I have a long track record of breaking down disciplinary silos, fostering creative problem solving, and enabling teams to thrive.

The following pages represent a sampling of recent work and experience on several sophisticated product design and development programs I have led as an Industrial Design Manager.

Design & Development Process (high level)

Ideation & Exploration – Discovering the possibilities using rapid visualization sketching and physical modeling techniques.

Refinement – Through dynamic iterative cycles of modeling, prototyping and testing, the product definition emerges with pointed clarity.

Production Planning – Setting up the path to manufacturing and procurement.

Go to Market – Manufacturing liaison to ensure a smooth product launch
