ask dr. ruth d: ryan White | 2019 | usa | 100 min | pG | CC
As Dr. Ruth Westheimer, a Holocaust survivor who became America’s most famous sex therapist, approaches her 90th birthday, she opens up about her difficult past and trailblazing career in this warm, funny and thoroughly surprising profile. Fueled by both a fierce survival instinct and a deep curiosity about human nature, the voice behind the landmark 1980s radio show Sexually Speaking became one of the fiercest advocates for sexual health and LGBTQ rights of the century. A nostalgia-tinged, empowering doc in the vein of last year’s RBG, Ask Dr. Ruth offers up a life story as edifying and candid as the icon herself.

Toni Morrison: The Pieces i amd: Timothy Greenfield-sanders | 2019 | usa | 119 min
Official Selection—Sundance Film Festival 2019
Uncover the life and work of the prolific author who made history as the first African American to win the Nobel Prize for Literature. The famed storyteller, now in her late 80s, spent her career penning rich, ambitious novels about race, history, and the human condition —carving out space for the voices of other marginalized writers along the way. Through a treasure trove of archival material and interviews with Oprah Winfrey, Angela Davis, and the trailblazer herself, this uplifting doc explores everything from Toni’s famed books—including The Bluest Eye and Song of Solomon—and the inspiration for her writing.

Ferrante Fever d: Giacomo durzi | 2017 | italy, France | 74 min
Italian novelist Elena Ferrante has become a global literary sensation thanks to her bestselling Neapolitan Quartet, which have sold 5 million copies and recently spawned an acclaimed miniseries on HBO. The whole world has Ferrante fever and documentary filmmaker Giacomo Durzi digs into why, taking us on a journey from New York City to Naples to uncover the secrets of the pseudonymous writer, the story behind her success and the power of her words. Some of the author’s closest collaborators and world-renowned writers like Jonathan Franzen and Elizabeth Strout offer insight into the books, the mysterious person behind them, and our global love affair with Ferrante.

There are no Fakes d: Jamie Kastner | 2019 | Canada | 114 min
Norval Morrisseau (Copper Thunderbird) is arguably the most influential Indigenous artist in Canada. After spending $20,000 at a reputable Toronto gallery to purchase Spirit Energy of Mother Earth, The Barenaked Ladies’ Kevin Hearn was surprised to discover the authenticity of his Morrisseau canvas being called into question. This leads the rock star into the tragic and exploitative web of art forgery ring in Canada’s north that quickly widens far beyond the canvas. Questions of authenticity, appropriation, and exploitation underlay this devastating story about a visionary artist caught between worlds.
“Like a good book club session.” – Jerusalem Post

Pushd: Fredrik Gertten | 2019 | Canada, sweden | 92 min
With housing prices soaring past income levels, and families being squeezed out of cities worldwide, having a place to live is becoming more and more difficult. In this urgent and incisive Hot Docs ‘19 hit, director Fredrik Gertten (Bikes vs. Cars) follows Leilani Farha, a newly appointed UN specialist from Ottawa, in her fight to define affordable housing as a fundamental human right. On her quest, she travels to some of the world’s biggest cities—London, New York, Barcelona, and Toronto—to examine the scale and causes of the crisis, and confront the corporate players turning housing into a commodity that can be bought and sold.

Propaganda: The art of Selling lies d: larry Weinstein | 2019 | Canada, Germany | 90 min
From cave paintings and the Catholic Church to presidential tweets and deep fakes, propaganda’s rapid progression hasn’t compromised its potency. In this popular Hot Docs 2019 selection, award-winning director Larry Weinstein traces the sprawling roots and mechanics of indoctrination through the lens of artists like Kent Monkman, Shepard Fairey and Ai Weiwei, whose revolutionary works have co-opted the conventions of disinformation. In a “post-truth” era where dangerous lies have never been better disguised, this cautionary investigation confronts us with the timely questions: If propaganda is all around us, how do we know what is true? And why are we so easily seduced?

Meeting gorbachevd: Werner herzog, andré singer | uK, Germany, usa | 2018 | 95 min
Any new Werner Herzog film is a cause for celebration. A riveting departure for the legendary filmmaker, who rarely delves deeply into politics, Meeting Gorbachev is a wide-eyed tribute to one of the world’s greatest living politicians. In the span of three sit-down interviews, Herzog and Mikhail S. Gorbachev look back at the former Soviet leader’s titan legacy, including his instrumental role in ending the Cold War, his massive strides to stop nuclear proliferation, and the dissolution of the USSR—all of which he achieved in just six years. “Everything I did was aimed at transforming our society.” Particularly poignant in the context of today’s returning Cold War climate, Herzog reminds us of the visionary’s inestimable power to unite, and the drastic and unforeseeable ways the world can change.
