Meeting MinutesFinger Lakes Region, SCCA General Membership Meeting Minutes

2014 is going by fast. We are into April. The Rochester Auto Show is already history. The 2014 Winter Rally program is winding down. The Solo group has a proposed schedule for the year and has enlisted sponsors to help with cost and promotions. They will publish it shortly. Marcus Kroll and Mike Tombs are working on the Regions truck so we can make a good impression.

A few of the things we are looking to do this summer:•Wehaveagreedtohelpoutwitha

solo type event at RITs’ Imagine Festival on May 5th.

•WehavereservedacabinatCampEastman on June 3rd for our annual membership recognition meeting.

• The race group has scheduled 2races one June 21st and 22nd at Nelsons’ Ledges and September 13th and 14th at Watkins Glen.

•WearestartingplansfortheAugust

picnic and hope to have a date and venuesolidifiedsoon.

• TheRegionhasbeenapproachedbythe Chili Chil-E Festival to see if we have any interest in participating in a parade and car show on July 4th. Unfortunately this is the same date as a Majors race at Watkins Glenn and many other town events. If anyone is interested in participating or organizing a group to be in the parade or car show contact me and I will get you the needed information.

We have looked into moving the membership meeting to the second Wed. of the month to respond to a member survey. We were unsuccessful. The Fireside Inn has a special promotion on Wed. nights and could not accommodate us. The room and service they have provided has worked out very well for both the board and membership meetings so we will stay with the last Tues. of the month for the board meeting andthefirstTues.ofthemonthforthemembership meeting at its’ current location. If anyone has another venue that could accommodate the change, let us know. It would be hard to beat the arrangement we currently have.

After 20+ years as webmaster Mary Anne Shults has decided to retire. We are looking at upgrading the website and a new webmaster. We are forever in MaryAnnes’ debt for starting the website and faithfully keeping it up to date.

As you can see it has been a busy year so far. I hope as everything gets finalized and started thingswill slowdown. I also know it probably won’t. For the Region to be successful we need to keep going forward. We will need to look at what we did this year and ask if we could have done it better. I know we will not be able to please everyone but if we can please 90% of our participants I will be happy.

National NewsThe Reboot of an SCCA ClassicThe New SportsCar Magazine Dear fellow members,

The April 2014 edition of SportsCar® (which begins to hit mailboxes in the next week) marks the beginning of its eighth decadeastheofficialmemberpublicationof our Sports Car Club of America.

As such, this is a perfect time to reboot the publication – a distinctly modern term for such a classic piece of our Club's heritage. The term "reboot" is actually perfect for the initiative, as with changing times, comes a new focus in modern publishing.

Our leadership has worked closely with the team at Racer Media & Marketing, the publisher of SportsCar, to align the magazine with the needs of our growing and changing Club. Not only does the content need to be relevant, but it needs to be compelling, and presented in a new, fresh way that makes the magazine an anticipated arrival into your mailbox, on your tablet or computer each month. The

focus will be on feature content that cannot regularly be found elsewhere in electronic media. Publisher Paul Pfanner, along with his team at SportsCar, has accepted the challenge with open arms.

We are certain that the new initiative will be welcomed by our membership, but we recognize that a new focus means the departure from an old one. There are going to be some things absent from the publication—most notably, Divisional reports. However, more in-depth stories from a variety of events will still provide us opportunities to celebrate what happens in the Club across the country.

Like some of our past feature content and event reports, information typically found in Divisional reports is best communicated through other methods that can reach its targeted audience in a more timely fashion. SCCA has launched new initiatives to help Regions, and even Divisions, accomplish this through its standardized web platform, new newslettertemplatesandprogramspecificon-line newsletters. If you are interested in any of these resources, contact Rick Myers ([email protected]) at headquarters.

The way our events are covered will change in the new SportsCar. Since stories and results can be found days, hours and even minutes after an event, magazine coverage will focus on the "story behind

the story." Championship coverage will continue to serve as our collectable yearbooks, but from a different angle than before.

SportsCar Magazine is an important part of both our history and our future. It is something that makes our Club unique, and needs to be a celebration of everything that we love about the SCCA. The long-term effect of this reboot will give us all a fresh and contemporary way to enjoy our experience in the best motorsports organization in America! Sincerely, John Walsh Chairman, SCCA Board of Directors

To all SCCA WorkersIf you are considering working the

2014 National Championship Runoffs® at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, October 6-12, 2014, please note that the process for being accepted to work at the event may be different from what you experience on your normal event weekends.

Worker Registration for the event is scheduled to open at 9am CDT on Wednesday, June 4th, 2014. All workers wanting to participate in the event must register prior to the event. Once you are registered, your information will be sent to the Chief of your specialty and he/she willconfirmyouracceptance.

A National license in your specialty is not required to work this event, nor is there a limit to the number of workers we will accept.

Our Specialty Chiefs will be putting together the best team possible to deliver anoutstandingeventforthefirsttripwestin over 40 years. They will need some background information from their crews that identifies experience, geographic representation and days available. When registration opens, it will be important for you to include that information in the space provided to help them make their staffingdecisions.

The list of Specialty Chiefs will be posted on the SCCA website by mid-March with the Event Schedule and Supplemental Regulations. You will be able to contact your Chief as needed after that time. Additional information will be posted on the Runoffs page as soon as it becomes available.

Rally Meeting NotesMarch 11, 201496 Church Street, Victor, NY

These notes are grouped by subject and are not in chronological order.

The following five RoadRally and RallyCross enthusiasts were present; Rick Barnes, Carl Dresie, Tom Langdon, John Werner and Tony Zanni. General Rally

Gary Thomas and John Kastenhuber are organizing the Green Grandprix for the Glen Region onApril 11.The energy efficientcars will be running on the Watkins Glen track on Friday morning and then will be doing a RoadRally in the afternoon. Workers are needed, contact Gary at [email protected].

Tony requested that the Novice meeting-safetybriefing include turningoff drivinglights at checkpoints. Failure to so impacts the teams that are stopped at the checkpoint and the ability of the checkpoint crew to accurately time a cars arrival. Failure to dim lights is a 25 point penalty as given in the general instructions. It can also be reviewed in the driver’s meeting.

The speed factors seem to be good; there have been only a few teams running “B” speed. The seeding procedure needs to be reviewed.

RallyCross safety stewards are needed. Arrangements need to be made with James Quattro.

2014 Winter Rally Series“Slip Sliding Away ‘14”withcoursedefinedby Rick is coming up on March 22. Start and finishisatCheapCharlie’s inBloomfield.Carl will do the safety pre-check, date and time to be arranged with Rick.“Quick & Dirty” with Kurt Thiel as rallymaster ran March 8. Results will be printed in the April edition of Top End. Lock, Stock and Barrel was the end point and proved to be a nice venue. “The Route of All EVO VI!” Karl Haltiner was rallymaster for the third event that ran on Feb. 22. Results and the rallymaster article are printed in the April issue of Top End. Applebee’s proved to be a good end location.2015 Winter Rally Series

We need to get the dates and rallymasters set for the 2015 series earlier and we need togenerateaflyerfortheseries.Tentativedates are Jan. 10, Jan. 24, Feb. 7, Feb. 21 and March 7. Snow date for the last event or an alternate to those proposed would be March 21. We do need to stay away from the St. Patrick’s Day weekend. These dates assume that the Waste Management Winter Rally will be Feb. 14. The Finger Lakes Region awards banquet has been scheduled for Jan. 31, 2015. Rallymasters are likely to be Alan Smith, Gary Thomas and John Kastenhuber and the Coppola brothers. Volunteer rallymasters are needed. A pre-season event will be scheduled if an appropriate date can be found in late November. The goal is to havedates, rallymasters and a seriesflyerdone in the September time frame. 2014 Summer Rally Series

Rick has volunteered to write a fall rally. A Monte Carlo event might be fun to do. Other options include a string rally. Dates need to be set by the April rally meeting. Outside interest has been shown in low key touring style rallies. RallyCross

Tony has dates for the 2013-14 RallyCross series.

We currently do not have a loaner car, which could cause us to lose four competitors. Tony is looking for a car that can be used as a loaner car. STPR®

The drone shots are “kind’a cool.” Results are printed in the April issue of

Top End. Tony reported that he and Rich Smith

broke the transmission when they hit something. Hand warmers and dry socks are high on the list of required equipment for the winter rally.

STPR® will run May 30-31. Miscellaneous Discussions

Anecdotes from the Waste Management Winter Rally were told.

Snow tires, summer tires and all season ones have performance curves that intersect at about 45 degrees.

All of Rick’s Mazda parts have been sold along with the 323 rally car. A deposit has been put down for the Ford EXP; it is slated to go to Iowa.

A car show car should look complete and original, even if not all of the “goodies” are functional.

The Finger Lakes Region’s booth at the RADA Auto Show needs to be upgraded to show that the enthusiast can drive his “daily driver.” Tony will talk with Barb Lissow in the fall to discuss ideas that can be used.

Tom is considering looking at Irish Wolfhound – Bassett mixed breed dog advertised for sale in the Buffalo area. John noted that he had a Chiwienie (Chihuahua – Dachshund mix). The description sounds unique. Tom promised more wiener dog pictures for the Rally photo in Top End.

Options for HVAC were discussed. The questionwasraisedastohowyouwouldfitaVW R into the well drilled for a geothermal unit.

Cross breeding left side hill and right side hill cattle was mentioned.

The subject of conversation kept returning to winter rally subjects.

“Cresting the hill and starting down the rut-ted, frozen and ice encrusted hill at a steepen-ing grade, it became clear that stopping at the checkpoint was problematic. The navigator’swords can’t be repeated in a family friendly publication.”

The Route of All EVO VI! Results

Route of All Evo VI ReportKarl Haltiner, Rallymaster

Dr. Evo does not like Mother Nature!! She has a cruel sense of humor. This has been an amazing winter with lots of snow and plenty of cold to keep it there and accumulate. The rallymaster had perfect conditions (for a rally, not course set-up – KH) when he and his reluctant son (who wanted to stay home and drive virtual cars on his X-box) did the course set-up: roads covered with snow and ice with more snow falling most of the way. Dr. Evo was smiling with delight in anticipation for the quintessential rally experience. But wait, it gets better: while resetting the final checkpoint near Middlesex, Dr. Evo inspired the rallymaster to investigate a road nearby that was seasonal and had not been available for many years. Dr. Evo wasfilledwith turbocharged ecstasy(does this have something to do with Middlesex? – KH) when the road was found to be plowed all the way through in the middle of January with lots of snow on the ground even though it was

still marked seasonal. Ah, this will make for a grand climax (really? – KH) to the rally. When the safety check was done with Jerry Kerwin a couple of weeks before the rally date, there was still plenty of snow and challenge – we even had to do a small re-route to go the long way around a delta that wasn’t plowed. We even survived a scare when Jerry thought the road was too narrow after the hump on the South Hill seasonal road (still plowed!) for a control. But Dr. Evo was not to be denied so he planted an inspired suggestion in Jerry (he even thought it was his idea) that we could have a radio control – it worked! Incidentally, Jerry claimed he had family matters to attend to preventing him from running the rally, not a lack of courage. Since he drives an Evo, it must be true.

All is well until that sadistic Mother Nature steps in with a warm, wet week that clears all the snow off the roads! However, given her unpredictable “nature”, she did give me a little Mona Lisa smile of bemusement and left some unexpected twists. The roads were now rutted and a bit muddy, and she did leave Gay Gulf Rd covered with a sheet of smooth slick ice. Dr. Evo was pleased – it turned out to be a challenging night

after all even if it wasn’t all it could have been.

You know it’s a challenging rally when Allen Smith and Eric Hobron have a total score of 31 and 3 TA’s as they truly earned the overall win and 1st in equipped. Gary Thomas and John Kastenhuber kept it close with 56 and 2nd in equipped and overall – but with 7 TA’s to their names. Jaime Hayslip and Gretchen Kreisen did an outstanding job for the win in Stock with 68.93 points for 3rd overall (C’mon Gretchen – let him run A speed and lose that factor: 61 raw). Eric Salminen and Dennis Blevins came all the way from Maryland to play in the Arctic tundra and were rewarded with 95 for 3rd equipped and 4th overall. Steve (from Connecticut) and Jeff (from Lima) Coppola are moving up in Limited and earned a respectable 159 to win and 5th overall. Ryan Kolupa and Steve Scheibel did a very respectable job to win novice with 543 to break into the tophalfofthefinishingorder.Worthyof honorable mention is Jake Bucknam and Justin Snyder who persevered to clawouta2ndplacefinishinNovice.Jake’s dad, Chris used to navigate for the rallymaster and they shared many most excellent adventures (and lost

his cookies a few times but insisted the rallymaster keep driving while he did so – not sure if that constitutes The Right Stuff)!

Sadly, three cars didnotfinish, allnovices who contacted the rallymaster and said they had a good time and would be back. One car overheated, another lost their lights, and one navigator who succumbed to the bumpy roads. Dr. Evo salutes them for their effort and resolve!

Once again, Dr. Evo honors the selfless ones who give of their time so that we can play in the mud. Jerry Kerwin as mentioned earlier did the course check, Tom and Deb Langdon who did Novice School and Registration respectively and respectfully as well as two controls. In a blast from the past, Bill Laitenberger and Debbi Segall came all the way from Arizona just to work two controls, though they made some lame excuse about visiting grandchildren. Alan Blood and Craig McMaster. Roy Hopkins and Adrian Hughes, Dave Avery and Sally Bossert, Larry Wells and Mike Toombs, Carl Dresie and Barb Lissow, Bob Van Sice and son (who has no name that we know of) worked controls, Rick Barnes and Jason Kostyshak did sweep, and Alan Smith did scoring.

Now, time to start plotting for Evo VII – something special – maybe Keuka Lake will freeze over………
