Introduction After the Xenia, Ohio tornado struck, 200 trucks a day rolled through 

town and it still took over three months to haul away all the debris. In this book you will learn all sorts of things about tornadoes. Every chapter has different topic. Come learn!  

 

What are tornadoes? Tornadoes are very 

dangerous.Tornadoes can be dangerous but can also be very exciting. Some people think tornadoes are the most violent storms. Tornadoes are also called a cyclone or a twister. Part of a tornado looks like a funnel. It almost looks like a 

finger pointing at the ground. This part is called the vortex. It does not move at all. It can gently wiggle in the air. It can even wave like a whip. Tornadoes are very dangerous.   

How do tornadoes form? Do you know how a tornado 

forms? Well, if you don’t know, then you will learn about it in this chapter. Tornadoes start if there is a strong thunderstorm with lightning, hail, and strong winds. Cold air gets trapped above the warm air in the storm. The cold air tries to move away from the warmer air and when this happens, a big, black cloud forms. Air starts to spin inside the big, black cloud. 

 

 How do tornadoes cause 

damage?  Tornadoes spin wind so fast the wind makes a vacuum. The tornado vacuum sucks up and moves anything it touches. It can suck up or move houses, trees, cars, dirt, or people. Things get destroyed and people get injured and sometimes killed. A tornado 

can also happen over water. A tornado over water is called a waterspout. These tornado waterspouts can suck up and move fish and plants from one part of a lake or ocean to another. 

 

Historic Tornadoes In 1925 in Missouri, 

Illinois, and Indiana a tornado touched down . This tornado had a wind speed of 219 mph. Wow, that’s amazing! The tornado killed 695 people and had a rating of F5. It crumbled schools and factories w ere demolished. The tornado started at 1:01 PM and it ended at 1

4:30 PM. Cars, trees and even cows were carried by the tornado. This tornado was recorded one of the most deadly tornadoes in history, ever.  

On May 3, 1999 in Oklahoma City, a tornado with a rating of F5 struck. This tornado had a wind speed of 318 mph.This tornado killed 36

people and the damage totaled to more than 1 billion dollars. Streets were lined with houses and trees became paths of splintered wood, bare branches and piles of trash. Asphalt was ripped from the road. Mobile homes were torn apart. The wind even tossed a freight car weighing over 18 tons.   

  

On June 8, 1966 in Topeka, Kansas, a tornado with a rating of F5. This tornado killed 16 people and injured 500 people. The tornado cost 1.6 million dollars in damage. The tornado gutted 3,000 homes in 30  minutes and 2

concrete blocks and bricks filled the downtown streets. The tornado flung dirt and chunks of buildings into the sky. It ripped a path through 

the city. The cluttered streets made it feel difficult to walk downtown after the storm. 

 

Storm Chasers Storm chasers want to observe and record 

a live tornado. They are very careful a and take 3

pictures of ones they see. They spent a lot of time

studying weather, driving around and waiting for a storm to happen. They look for favorable tornado weather conditions. They use radios, phones, computers, and video equipment. They keep food and drinks for a long day in the car. A lot of times, storm chasers do no even see a storm. 

 

How do you stay safe during a tornado? 

It’s very important to stay safe during a tornado or even any storm. If you are at home, go into your cellar or the safest part of your home.  This is a room with no 4

windows and a strong structure. Bring everything you need and the safety kit items listed below. When the tornado happens, cover your head with your arms. Also, keep your phone nearby so when the tornado is gone, you can call for help. If you are at school, go into the hallway and have the safety kit in your locker. When the tornado comes, cover your head with a book. Keep your phone nearby to call to find help. This goes for both home and school watch your surroundings like walls, cinder blocks, bricks, tile, or anything that can hurt you.

Conclusion Tornadoes are very dangerous. There were some interesting things
