P-waves of earthquakes in regional distances (<30 deg) have their turning points in the crust (local) and upper mantle. Typical frequencies are between 1 and 20 Hz.
1. What is the expected apparent velocity (in km/s) and slowness (in s/km) and s/deg) for a ray diving to 400 and 600 km depth? Tip: Calculate horizontal slowness from the ray parameter, which may b estimated from the given graph
2. What is the expected range of apparent wavelengths for the given range of frequencies?
3. What is the needed inter-sensor distance and array aperture to resolve body waves arriving with these horizontal wavenumbers?
4. Make the same estimate for P waves between 0.05 and 5 Hz that are diving to the core-mantle boundary.
