Torticollis Information & Home Exercise Program www.paediatricpearls.co.uk What is torticollis? •Torticollis is most commonly due to the tightening or shortening of the sternocleidomastoid (SCM) muscle of the neck, which connects the skull to the collarbone and sternum. http://40.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_lvy9qvVald1qj3idho1_500.jpg •The right SCM bends the neck to the right side and rotates the neck to the left side. The left SCM bends the neck to the left side and rotates the neck to the right side. •A tight or shortened SCM may cause your baby to hold his or her head in a tilted and/or rotated position. •Your baby may have difficulty holding his or her head in midline or actively moving toward the nonQpreferred side.
