    offerings for different types of touristsincluding a distinct cultural heritage, historical

    monument, varied cuisine, diverse ethnic

    groups, world class national parks, beachresort and friendly and hospitable hosts.

    Policy and Organization

    The governments formal role in tourism

    management dates back to 1959 with the

    formation of the Tourism Organization of

    Thailand [ TOT ]. It was replaced by the

    current administrative structure, the Tourism

    Authority of Thailand [ TAT ]. TAT is controlled

    by a Board of Directors which answers directlyto the Prime Ministers Office.

    The objectives ofTAT

    The objectives of TAT are stated in the Act as follows

    To promote tourism and the tourist industry, includingthe employment of Thai citizens.

    To make Thailand known for its natural beauty, ancientmonuments, antiques, history, arts, sports, andtechnological development and other activities for thepurpose of encouraging tourism.

    To provide facilities and safety for tourists.

    To promote good understanding and friendshipbetween peoples and nations by means of tourism.

    To initiate the development of tourism and tourisminfrastructure and facilities.

    These objectives are further refined by the tourismdevelopment policies in the Sixth National Economicand Social Development Plan, which emphasizes thefollowing:

    Synchronizing the relationship between tourismdevelopment and promotion.

    Ensuring systematic tourism promotion, quality oftourism products and visitors safety.

    Cooperation between the government and privatesectors.

    Promotion of international convention.

    Encouraging domestic tourism.
