As I approached the behemoth known as Royal Caribbeans Liberty of the Seas, scenes from the Titanic inevitably reverber-ated through my overly excited but slightly frazzled mind. The first night a sleepless one stirred anger toward what felt like a cruelly ironic name for the ship. Liberty was the last name I would use to describe a shaky vessel drifting along the Mediter-ranean. Thankfully, every night thereafter was smooth sailing. All in all, the service and dining on the cruise made the experience unlike any other, but a mere day spent in each port only left me with a glimpse of each city.

Toulon and Marseille: If the beauty of Marseille doesnt blow you away, the wind

sure will.The windy climb is really worth it when after a few hundred steps you finally reach the entrance of the Notre-Dame de la Garde, a Catholic basilica located at the highest natural point in Marseille. Palaus Longchamp is a monumental fountain built to celebrate the formation of a canal and preservation of water, and it is one beautiful irony. Leaving Marseille, I was impressed but doubtful Id want to return.

Nice and Monaco: Nice is an understatement for this city. A fusion of old and

new, nature and architecture, touristy destinations and local food, Nice was a place I would definitely love to revisit. The views from its park paint a scenic image of beautiful homes and struc-tures amid crystal clear blue water.

Monaco was a paradise, but one to which I would not return unless Id ever be able to afford living there. A severe prescription of relative deprivation is not really my forte.

Florence: Lets just say I have yet to discover much of Florence. Lit-

erally. Having spent about 50 minutes in one of Italys most historic cities doesnt leave one with much to share. The cruise docked two hours later than expected, and it turned out Florence was at least a 2-hour train ride from the port. Three hours later after some unexpected delays I was in Florence, running to catch a Hop-on Hop-off bus for the two or so hours I had left. After another 40-minute traffic jam, caused by two cars trying to pass in opposite direction, I learned two lessons: Europeans are very laidback and Im not really going to see Florence. The

part of Florence I did see was beauti-ful. One hour after the Hop-on Hop-off tour, it was time to go back, and once more, there was a 30-minute delay leading to a panic attack that Id miss the cruise. Some 15 minutes of sprinting followed by huffing and puffing later, I was beaming with excitement, sweat, or a little bit of both for making it back to the cruise on time.

Rome: I cant say I enjoyed roaming another city as much as I did

this one. It is truly like stepping into another era, but the tourists and quite aggressive beggars quickly point you back to reality. Romes architecture is arguably unmatched.

Naples, Sorrento, and Positano: The fruits from a day spent traveling around Sorrento were

incredibly rewarding. Atop elevated grounds, I tasted the best cherry tomatoes, apricots, peaches, and figs. Driving up the slopes was exhilarating. Anywhere I stared, I saw unparalleled panoram-ic views of Mt. Vesuvius, an active volcano, and beautiful, black-sanded beaches. A perfect blend of relaxation and exploration, my day exploring Sorrento was one I hope to repeat sometime soon. The perfect exemplification of Italy, Positano is simplistic beauty at its best. As clich as this might sound, a relative inexpensive restaurant for locals, called Da Costantino, served the most amaz-ing pizza and caprese salad you can imagine (and keep in mind this is coming from a New Yorker). The clothing and leather shops offer products and much cheaper prices than in the U.S., and it doesnt get much better than the Made in Italy label.

Barcelona and Madrid: I spent several days before and after the cruise exploring these

cities. I loved the atmosphere of Madrid, which seemed to be a liberal haven for many young people (kind of like Boston except not as nerdy). The food was both amazing and cheap.

Barcelona is an intertwined fusion of classic and innovative that actually seems to work. Gaudis influence makes it an as-sortment of very unique and unbelievable structures. Although Barcelona is considerably more expensive than Madrid, the trip is well worth it.
