TOURSAfternoon walking tours will be led by LB Tower Hamlets, developers, architects and other stakeholders where possible. All delegates can pick one tour from the options below: your delegate badge will indicate which tour you have been allocated to. If you have not been allocated a tour, but would like to go on one, please contact staff at the reception desk. Tours will leave from One Canada Square at 13:45. Please have your coats and bags ready as we will not be returning. Tours B, C and D will begin with public transport so please ensure you have a valid travel card.

Delegates will explore the estate strategy for Canary Wharf and Wood Wharf and learn about future development plans for the area. Starting off with a bird’s eye view of the Canary Wharf estate, Howard Dawber, Strategic Adviser to Canary Wharf, will talk the group through future developments before delegates are led round the estate on foot to discuss on the ground the major plans for this new piece of London, with input from Allies and Morrison, before Ian Simpson takes over and leads the group to talk about his practice’s Dollar Bay scheme.

Sensible footwear is needed.

This tour will take delegates from Shadwell DLR through Watney Market towards the Whitechapel Vision masterplan area, taking in the regeneration of the old Royal London hospital, High Street 2012, new Crossrail station, Brick Lane and Bishopsgate Goodsyard, ending in Shoreditch where ING Media will be kindly hosting refreshments.

This tour will give delegates an overview of the huge level of regeneration which has taken place in Stepney. Starting at Limehouse DLR, delegates will walk through Stepney City Farm towards the key developments of So Stepney and Vivo (Ocean Estate), discussing these major regeneration schemes in detail on site with the architects involved, before ending at Stepney Green tube station.

JUSTIN CARRStrategic Planning Manager, GLA

Justin has over 20 years experience of planning in London. Initially he worked at Croydon Council in their local Plan team where he was responsible for formulating the Councils Greenbelt and Downland policy. Justin has worked at the GLA for the last 10 years and has been responsible for managing the Mayor’s responses to general conformity of local plans to the London Plan and for the last 6 years has managed the strategic planning referrals to the GLA which have included the Mayors call-ins of high density and high rise residential schemes at Convoys Wharf and City Road. Justin is the GLA’s lead officer on major development schemes such as the Bishopsgate Goodsyard master plan. Justin has also appeared as an expert witness for the Mayor at the Crystal Palace public inquiry, a proposal for the comprehensive master planning of that site.

PAUL AUGARDE Head of Creativity and Innovation, Poplar HARCA

After a decade in the film industry, Paul swapped film sets for housing estates, working in housing and community development roles with housing associations Richmond Housing Partnership and Thames Valley Housing before moving to Poplar HARCA in East London. As Head of Creativity and Innovation, Paul leads on non-physical regeneration, shaping the placemaking agenda in Poplar within and as part of Poplar HARCA’s £1.7bn regeneration programme.

MICHAEL BELL Strategic Planning Manager, LB Tower Hamlets

Michael Bell has worked as a planner in the public sector for 15 years. He has worked for Tower Hamlets for over 9 years, the last 4 years as Strategic Planning Manager. Michael has recently led on the completion of the Council’s Local Plan and the Whitechapel Masterplan. He also oversees the work of the Council’s design and conservation specialists. Tower Hamlets has consistently produced innovative and cutting edge planning policy documents to proactively manage development in the fastest growing London borough. The South Quay Masterplan is the current focus of the Team’s work.

David is a town planner and urban designer specialising in urban regeneration and has over 25 years experience in both the public and private sectors. Having been based in east London for the last 18 years, he has been involved in delivering a wide range of projects in one of the most dynamic locations in the country. Having previously managed the planning and development team at Leaside Regeneration, he formed the planning and development consultancy; Leaside Planning Limited, in 2011. David works closely with Poplar HARCA and, since 2001, he has been involved in the planning of many of their estate renewal programmes.

DUNCAN BROWNDeputy Team Leader – Strategic Planning, LB Tower Hamlets

Duncan is a qualified town planner who joined Tower Hamlets in 2008 and led on the planning advice for the award winning Ocean housing regeneration scheme in Stepney. He has previously advised on some of London’s largest regeneration projects at Arsenal Football Club’s redevelopment in Islington and the Woodberry Down scheme in Hackney. At Tower Hamlets, Duncan played a key role in the planning of Blackwall Reach regeneration and the Olympic legacy masterplan. More recently he project managed the production of the Whitechapel Vision masterplan SPD towards its successful adoption in December 2013.

GERARD MACCREANOR Director, Maccreanor Lavington

Gerard is a founding partner of Maccreanor Lavington architects. The office currently has offices in London Rotterdam, Shanghai and St Petersbrug. Gerard has extensive experiences in residential; hotel; retail; mixed-use projects; large-scale masterplans, and urban regeneration projects in both the UK and the Netherlands. He is the Director in charge of the growing portfolio of urban design commissions for which the office received the Masterplanner of the Year, Architect of the Year Awards.

JO MCCAFFERTY Director, Levitt Bernstein

Jo McCafferty is a Director at Levitt Bernstein whose key role has been to champion inventive design solutions in housing at detailed design and masterplanning scales. She has steered numerous regeneration schemes through complex planning processes and advises developers and housing providers on design and quality standards. Jo has co-authored several housing publications and is a design advisor for UDL design surgeries. Jo is currently leading the Aberfeldy New Village masterplan project in Poplar, Tower Hamlets, which will provide 1100 new homes, a public park, health, faith and community centres and local shops.

ROBERT MAGUIREProject Director – Wood Wharf, Canary Wharf Group

Following post-graduate studies in the early 80s Robert worked for the City of Toronto and then with Urban Strategies Inc. on a range of major commercial and mixed used development schemes in Toronto and New York. This was followed by Phase I of Canary Wharf in London. Since the early 90’s Robert has practiced as an urban development and regeneration specialist and led the planning and development of some of the UK’s major urban regeneration schemes. Starting in April 2012 he has acted as Project Director of Wood Wharf for the Canary Wharf Group.

ERIC VAN DER KLEIJHead of Level39 Technology Accelerator, Canary Wharf Group

Eric Van der Kleij is a technology entrepreneur and the Head of Level39, Europe’s largest accelerator space for Financial, Retail, & Smart Cities technology companies. Eric was formerly the Chief Executive of the UK’s Tech City Investment Organisation, which was tasked with boosting investment, entrepreneurship and skills in the “Silicon Roundabout” area of East London. Before his work with the UK government, Eric was a pioneering technology entrepreneur who founded fraud prevention company Adeptra, which was sold to FICO in August 2012.

AMAN DALVI OBECorporate Director of Development & Renewal, LB Tower Hamlets

Aman Dalvi (OBE) joined Tower Hamlets in February 2009. Aman has extensive experience of the housing sector. He has previously been a Chief Executive of a housing association and Chair of three housing organisations.He has also been on the board of the Olympic Park Legacy Company and English Partnerships.

JOHN O’MARA Associate, Project Director, Herzog & de Meuron

John O’Mara began his collaboration with Herzog & de Meuron in 2008 as Project Manager on the Tate Modern Project, and moved to London in 2009 to coordinate our UK office and projects. John studied architecture and technology of architecture at Bolton Street Institute, Dublin, Southbank University and the Architectural Association, London. During and between academic studies, he worked with various studios to develop his design and practical experience. From 2001 to 2008, he collaborated with Future Systems in London, where he was an Associate Director and worked on numerous built works and competitions.

PETER MURRAYChairman, NLA

Peter trained as an architect and was editor of Building Design and RIBA Journal before starting Blueprint Magazine in 1983. He has curated a number of major architectural exhibitions and is Chairman of the communications consultancy Wordsearch. He is founder of both NLA and the London Festival of Architecture and is author of various architectural books including “The Saga of Sydney Opera House” and “A Passion to Build”. He is a Visiting Professor at IE University in Madrid and Hon. Sec. of the Bedford Park Society.

DAVID WILLIAMSDeputy Service Head Planning & Building Control, LB Tower Hamlets

David has worked in planning in inner London for 24 years, the last 17 of these in Tower Hamlet. David has focussed on strategic planning and project delivery across the Borough and in 2001 became the Project Director for the Millennium Quarter Masterplan, an area at the heart of the Isle of Dogs driving forward the second generation of development in the area. At Tower Hamlets, he is currently the Deputy Service Head focussing on strategic initiatives and nurturing the next generation of planners and plans in the Borough.

ALASTAIR PATTERSONCEO, Digital Shadows

Anna Sinnott has over 13 years experience in planning consultancy and masterplanning. Anna specialises in providing expert planning advice to design teams and works closely with architects and other professions on projects in the UK and abroad. These projects range from large scale spatial planning in China, to masterplans for town centre regeneration schemes in the UK. Current work in Tower Hamlets also includes leading the Whitechapel Vision Masterplan and the preparation of the Environmental Impact Assessment for the Wood Wharf Masterplan.
