Sullivan Earth Day 2019!

Last year, 48 volunteers turned out for our first Earth Day event. On Saturday, April 20th, wind and rain didn’t keep us from our task. We set a new record this year as 51 people stepped up to make Sullivan shine! After several hours on the roadsides, our soaking wet (but still smiling) volunteers came back to the town office for a cookout prepared by Age-Friendly Sullivan. Age-Friendly also provided break-fast treats to 11 volunteers who assisted with set-up, sign-up and breakdown. Nine Sullivan businesses and one Sorrento business gave their time to help, too.

Our volunteers picked up 100 bags of trash which disappeared the following Monday thanks to the Maine DOT. We have posted dozens of pictures on our Town of Sullivan Facebook page and we wanted to put a few here for your enjoyment. THANK YOU EARTH DAY VOLUNTEERS! Your love for Sullivan and our planet is obvious to anyone travelling the Schoodic Scenic Byway. We hope you are proud of your accomplishment. Sullivan is certainly proud of you!

Fiberight Presentation a Big Success

Fifteen residents attended the April 17th “Let’s Talk Trash” event at the Sullivan Town Office. Shelby Wright, Director of Community Services for Fiberight and Coastal Resources, gave a 90 minute presenta-tion and answered many questions. Attendees learned about the newest methods for recycling in the newest, state-of-the-art facility in the State of Maine. Many residents were surprised to learn that up to 80% of their regular waste placed in a trash bag will be recycled. That recycling even includes the bag that contains your trash! If you missed the presentation, we’ve got you covered. In the next week or so, information will be posted on our Sulli-vanmaine.org website, and instructional flyers will be available at the Transfer Station starting Saturday, May 4th.

Statehood Bi-centennial Planning Session

The Sullivan-Sorrento Historical Society will be hosting a planning meeting at the Sullivan Town Office on Thursday May 9, 2019 at 6:30 pm. It isn’t every day that our State turns 200 years old. It is our hope that local organizations, individuals, groups of individuals, and businesses will take on the planning and implementation of various projects and events throughout 2020 to celebrate this historic event. S-SHS will work to coordinate these projects and offer our historic resources. It should be noted that in 1820, Sullivan included present day Sullivan, Waukeag Neck and Hancock. Please join us and help make Maine’s birthday special in our community.

Several suggestions have been made of possible pro-jects: Research & celebrate local homes built prior to 1821 A community effort to create a commemorative quilt Research the local political process – how did people

feel about becoming a state and how did they vote Create and deliver programs for youth Look into lifestyle and economics Farming Fishing What did people eat – have suppers using traditional

foods and recipes of the time

Greetings from RSU #24, I'm done with winter! I have had enough snow and cold temperatures. It is time for the spring to really show its colors. On April 10, the Maine State Board of Education approved the Concept Design that we proposed for the new building project to replace Sumner Memorial High School. This is a huge milestone in the building process and allows us to move forward with a referendum to be held on June 11. The voting will take place at your local voting station. For those who are interested, we will hold one more Public Meeting on May 22, starting at 6:30 p.m. at Sumner Memorial High School. The presentation will be very similar to the one held in March and will allow you the opportunity to ask questions about the design of the building and the layout of the campus. Also, our architect is currently working on a brochure that will provide you with many of the details of the project. We will mail that too, when it is ready. The vote on June 11 will most certainly be one of the biggest decisions that our communities will make in regards to our students' education. I encourage you to weigh in on the building project by getting to your local polling station on June 11th. The RSU #24 Budget and Finance Committee completed its work on April 10th. All of the individual school and department budgets, with the exception of the Adult Education budget, were presented to the com-mittee over the last couple of months. The Adult Education budget will be presented at the May 7 RSU #24 Board meeting. At the meeting, the Board will also consider the 2019-2020 budget as a whole and will vote to move the budget forward for the annual district budget meeting, to take place on May 29, at 6:30 p.m. at Sumner High School. The budget will be presented at this meeting, followed by a question and answer peri-od. At the end of the meeting, there will be a number of votes taken as part of the process that is necessary to move the budget forward to the referendum in each of our 9 RSU #24 communities, also on June 11th. I hope that you are able to attend the meetings mentioned above. I thank you for the continued support of our students and our schools. If you have any questions or comments, please don't hesitate to reach out to me at 422-2017 or [email protected]. Sincerely, Michael Eastman, Superintendent Regional School Unit #24 2165 US Highway 1 Sullivan, Maine 04664 Email: [email protected]
