General Notesin the first quarter against Elon. He finished the game with 72 yards on nine carries.

Victor Earns CAA HonorRunning back Darius Victor earned CAA Offensive Player of the Week honors after rushing for a career-best 207 yards and three touchdowns against Holy Cross.

Victor Adds CFPA HonorDarius Victor picked up another honor when he was named an honorable mention national performer of the week by the College Football Performance Awards (CFPA).

Two BillsDarius Victor eclipsed the 200-yard mark for the first time in his career against Holy Cross. He became the first Tiger to go over the mark since Terrance West rushed for 354 yards against Eastern Illinois in the 2013 FCS Quarterfinals.

Ground AssaultThe Tigers offense put up 276 yards on the ground. It was the most yards on the ground since the 2013 season. Towson went over 200 yards on the ground three times during the 2014 season, including a season-best 261 yards against North Carolina Central.

2nd Half SurgeSaturday’s game was a tale of two halves for the Tigers. After a sluggish first 30 minutes, Towson came out and scored 22 points in the second half. The Tigers gained 255 of their 410 yards of offense in the second half.

Pair of InterceptionsThe Tigers entered the game against Holy Cross without an interception. They left the game with two interceptions after Alfonso Augustine and Nico Law each picked off their first passes as Tigers.

Defense Secures WinThe Tigers found themselves in a similar situation that had a season ago; having a one score lead with to minutes to go and the defense on the field. But, unlike last year, the defense did not allow Holy Cross passed midfield and secured the three-point victory.

Those Tricky TigersTowson reached into its bag of tricks in the fourth quarter against HC. Connor Frazier took the snap and rolled to the left before hitting Sam Hurwitz on a 10-yard gain for a first down. On the next play, Darius Victor scored what turned out to be the game-winning touchdown.

Scoring in Eight-Straight QuartersTowson started the season by scoring in each of the first eight quarters. That streak ended in the first quarter against Holy Cross. Through three games, Towson has scored in 11 of the 12 quarters.

Opening DrivesThe Tigers got off to quick starts in each half through the first two games. Towson scored on each of its four possessions opening the game or half. The Tigers have scored three touchdowns and a field goal on those possessions.

Strong Defense vs. SFUThe Tiger defense allowed just 187 yards of total offense against Saint Francis. It marked the lowest yardage total since Towson allowed just 160 yards against Morgan State in the 2011 season opener. The majority of the yards cam in the lat in the game. The Tigers gave up just 32 yards of offense in the first half.

18-Play DriveThe Towson offense started the Saint Francis game by putting together an 18-play drive that covered 86 yards and ended with a Darius Victor two-yard TD run. The drive took 9:18 off the first quarter clock.

29 Yards RushingThe Tiger defense was stout against the run against Saint Francis. The defense allowed just 29 rushing yards on 30 attempts. They also allowed just two first downs via the rush. It was the fewest rushing yards allowed just giving up just two yards to North Carolina Central in 2013.

Frazier Another Career DayQuarterback Connor Frazier had his second-straight career day when he throw for 269 yards against Saint Francis. He has been over 200 yards in both games this season after not surpassing the 200-yard mark in 12 games a year ago.

Jones Bursts On the SceneDefensive lineman Clifton Jones had the best game of his career as he recorded 3.5 tackles-for-loss and 1. 5 sacks against Saint Francis.

Lewis With a House CallDefensive back Donnell Lewis electrified the crowd with a 49-yard punt return for a touchdown against Saint Francis. He made the first defender miss before finding the wall on the outside and outran the defense. It was his first punt return for a touchdown. He also has two interception returns for touchdowns, both coming in 2013.

400 Yards Against FBSThe Towson offense put up 416 yards of total offense against East Carolina. It marked the most yards ever gained by the Tigers against an FBS opponent. The previous high was 392 yards at Indiana on Sept. 2, 2010.

Dowling Makes ReturnRedshirt senior Brian Dowling return to the lineup in 2015 and was back to his old ways. He led the team with four receptions for 53 yards, including a 30-yard touchdown reception on the opening drive of the season.

Enforcing the LawSenior defensive back Nico Law made a strong debut for the Tigers by recording a game-high 10 tackles. Six of his tackles were solo, while he also added a quarterback hurry.

Hurwitz Sound in Kicking GameKicker Sam Hurwitz got his season off to a strong start when he made both of his field goal attempts in the season opener. He hit from 23 yards in the second quarter and 32 yards in the third quarter. He also had a touchback on his five kickoffs.

True Freshman at ECUA trio of true freshman made their debut’s at East Carolina. Running back Shane Simpson hauled in a 13-yard pass to pick up a first down. Coker Has Strong PreseasonSenior defensive lineman Tungie Coker had one of the best preseason camps for a defensive lineman. He is coming off a season in which he recorded 30 tackles and a sack.

Simms Returns as Top TacklerSophomore James Simms made an immediate impact his freshman season as he recorded a team-best 99 tackles. With a year of experience, along with another full year in the weight room, Simms looks for another strong season from his linebacker spot.

Speed in the SecondaryThe Tigers will not have the luxury of All-American Tye Smith on the outside, but they will make up for that with one of the fastest units they have put on the field in recent years. That unit will be tested early against the spread attack of East Carolina.

Coordinators RemainFor the third-straight season, Towson will enter the season with the same offensive and defensive coordinators. Jared Ambrose is in his third year as the offensive coordinator, while Matt Hachman is in his seventh season as the defensive coordinator.

Victor Named to STATS Watch ListRunning back Darius Victor was one of 22 players named to the STATS Preseason Offensive Player of the Year Watch List, formerly the Walter Payton Award.

The 6 KingsInstead of naming captains, Towson has named six kings. These players were honored for the way they conduct themselves on and off the field. Each king has several sentinels under them. The six kings are Bryton Barr, Jon Desir, Connor Frazier, Eric Handy, Emmanuel Holder and Darius Victor.

Victor and Desir Earn Preseason HonorsSenior defensive tackle Jon Desir and junior running back Darius Victor were selected to the Preseason All-CAA team.

Tigers in the ProsThe Towson football team currently has five players on active 53-man rosters or the practice squad. Tye Smith made the Seattle Seahawks 53-man roster. Terrance West made the Cleveland Browns 53-man roster, but was traded to the Tennessee Titans. Jermon Bushrod is in his second season with the Chicago Bears, while Ryan Delaire was recently picked up by the Carolina Panthers.

General NotesFormer safety Jordan Dangerfield is on the Pittsburgh Steelers practice squads.

Up NextThe Tigers return home to face local rival Villanova for Homecoming Oct. 24. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. and can be seen live on the American Sports Network.

2015 FOOTBALL GAME NOTES • STONY BROOK

Over the last four years, Rob Ambrose has led Towson football to 33 wins, a pair of CAA championships and two NCAA FCS playoff appearances. Heading into his seventh season at the helm of the Tiger football program in 2015, Ambrose has his sights set on a return to the NCAA FCS National Championship game. Coming off an NCAA FCS Championship game appearance the year before, the Tigers battled a plethora of injuries during the 2014 season. However, for the second straight year, a Tiger was selected in the NFL Draft. Just one year after running back Terrance West was selected by the Cleveland Browns in the third round, cornerback Tye Smith went in the fifth round of the 2015 NFL Draft to the Seattle Seahawks. You don’t have to look very far back to find Ambrose’s impact in the wins and losses column. In 2013, he guided the Tigers to a magical season as Towson reached the NCAA FCS championship game by beating No. 9 Fordham, No. 2 Eastern Illinois and No. 3 Eastern Washington in consecutive weeks. Towson finished the campaign with a 13-3 record; the 13 wins were a school record. Ranked second in the final NCAA FCS polls, Towson won the Lambert/Meadowlands Award as the top FCS team in the East. The Tigers were also honored as the ECAC FCS Team of the Year. During the 2012 season, Ambrose led the Tigers to a 7-4 record against an extremely difficult schedule. The Tigers lost to a pair of nationally-ranked FBS programs in Kent State and LSU. But, Towson finished the season with a 6-2 CAA record as the Tigers shared the league title. In 2011, just his third season as the Tigers’ head coach, Ambrose guided Towson to one of the most dramatic turnarounds in college football history. Only one season removed from a 1-10 record, the 2011 team became the “Turnaround Tigers” by going 9-3. Their 7.5-game improvement was the most dramatic improvement in NCAA Division I history. Towson posted a 9-2 regular season record, beat six nationally-ranked teams and won the CAA championship outright with a 7-1 record in 2011. The Tigers also made their first appearance in the NCAA FCS playoffs, becoming the first program to earn playoff

berths at the Division III, Division II and FCS (I-AA) levels. Once the season ended, Ambrose was honored as the 2011 CAA Coach of the Year, the AFCA District Coach of the Year and was a finalist for the Liberty Mutual Coach of the Year. In January 2012, he was the recipient of the Eddie Robinson Award as the top coach in FCS football.

The UConn years (2002-08)Ambrose joined the staff at UConn as the Huskies grew from an NCAA Division I-AA program into a major college contender. During his seven seasons in Storrs, Connecticut, the Huskies were 49-36 with just two losing seasons. UConn made three bowl appearances in five years, debuted in the AP national rankings at 16th, and won a share of the Big East title in 2007. Joining the staff as the quarterbacks coach, Ambrose played a major role in the development of Dan Orlovsky, the first UConn quarterback to play in the NFL as a fifth-round draft pick by the Detroit Lions. In 2008 as the offensive coordinator, Ambrose coached Donald Brown, an All-American and the 2008 BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Year. Brown led the nation with 2,083 yards on 367 carries and became the first UConn player to be selected in the first round of the NFL draft.

His first head coaching job – Catholic (2001)Ambrose left Towson after the 2000 season to become the head coach at Catholic University, a Division III program in Washington, D.C. In one year at Catholic, Ambrose led the Cardinals to a 3-7 record.

As a Tiger assistant (1992-2000)In nine years as a Tiger assistant, the team went 54-36 with only two losing seasons. Ambrose started as a student-assistant before being promoted to wide receivers coach in 1993, offensive coordinator in 1997 and then to associate head coach in 2000. He coached four All-Americans in running back Tony Vinson, quarterback Dan Crowley, and wide receivers Mark Orlando and Jamal White. Vinson led the nation in rushing yards (2,016), all-purpose yards (2,073) and points scored (138) in 1993. Vinson went on to be a

fifth-round draft pick of the San Diego Chargers. Orlando earned All-America notice by catching 55 passes for 1,223 yards and 12 touchdowns. In 1999, Towson led the nation in passing yardage, averaging 381.2 passing yards per game.

His collegiate playing careerAs a player at Towson, Ambrose started his career as a quarterback but moved to wide receiver as a sophomore. In 1990, he caught four passes for 20 yards. As a junior, he had four catches for 35 yards. Three of those receptions were touchdown passes from Dan Crowley. He caught an 11-yard TD pass at James Madison, a seven-yard TD toss at Liberty and a 14-yard TD pass against Hofstra. An injury in the spring before his senior year forced Ambrose to the sidelines.

The Ambrose familyThe Tigers’ coach is the son of one of the most successful high school football coaches in Maryland. His father, Tim, was the head coach at Middletown for 31 years and won 249 games, leading the Knights to 14 Monocacy Valley League championships. He retired in 2013, just in time to follow the Tigers’ march to the NCAA championship game. The former athletic director at Middletown, he stepped down as football coach after the 2004 season. Coach Ambrose’s brother, Jared, was an assistant football coach at Delaware for two years before joining the Tigers’ staff. He is currently the program’s offensive coordinator. Ambrose and his wife, Melissa, have two children: Grace and Riley.

GREENVILLE, N.C. -- Towson went toe-to-toe with FBS foe East Carolina Saturday night and found themselves with a chance to tie the game late. The Tigers were unable to reach the endzone and dropped its season opener, 28-20, to the Pirates at Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium.

Towson got on the board on their first possession of the season as Connor Frazier capped 12-play drive with a 30-yard touchdown pass to Brian Dowling.

The Tigers would drive deep into Pirates territory in the second and third quarters, but had to settle for field goals (23, 32) from Sam Hurwitz.

Towson reached the endzone again in the fourth quarter after Darius Victor broke free on a 24-yard run down to the goaline. On the next play, Frazier scored on the quarterback sneak.

The defense would force a punt and give Towson the chance to tie the game late. Victor carried the ball five times on six plays to help the Tigers get into the redzone. Unfortunately, the drive stalled as the fourth-down pass was broken up.

Frazier finished the day with a career-high 221 yards on 15-of-28 passing. He also rushed for 43 yards and a score.

Victor continued his strong running by finishing with 137 yards on 28 totes.

Nico Law led the defense with 10 tackles.

TOWSON, Md. -- Darius Victor ran for a pair of touchdowns and the Towson defense held Saint Francis to just 197 yards of offense in the Tigers 35-20 victory in the 2015 home opener.

Victor capped an 18-play opening drive with a one-yard touchdown run. He followed it up with a seven-yard scoring run in the second quarter.

Donnell Lewis got into the scoring act as he returned a punt 49 yards for a second-quarter score. It was the first punt return for a touchdown for Lewis and the first for the Tigers since week three a season ago.

Connor Frazier had his second-straight big game as he threw for 269 yards and a touchdown, while also rushing for another score.

Jacquille Veii led the receivers with four catches for 115 yards. Included in those catches was a one-handed grab around the back of the defender.

The Tiger defense controlled the Red Flash all night as they limited SFU to just 29 yards rushing on 30 attempts.

SFU got the majority of their yards in the second half after being held to just 32 yards of offense in the first half.

Jordan Mynatt led the defense with seven tackles and 1.5 sacks. Clifton Jones added 1.5 sacks and 3.5 tackles-for-loss.

TOWSON, Md. -- Junior Darius Victor rushed for a career-best 207 yards and three touchdowns as Towson rallied from a halftime deficit to defeat Holy Cross, 29-26.

Victor did the majority of his damage in the second half as he ran for 116 yards and scored all three touchdowns in the game’s final 30 minutes.

After trailing by nine at the half, Victor set the tone in the second half with a 54-yard run on the first play from scrimmage. He capped the drive with a one-yard TD run before going 34 yards for a score on the next possession.

The Tigers got a little tricky in the fourth quarter as they successfully executed a fake field goal as Connor Frazier hit kicker Sam Hurwitz for a 10-yard gain. On the next play, Victor scored what turned out to be the game-winning touchdown from four yards out.

The defense secured the victory by stopping the Crusaders at midfield on the final possession of the game. Alfonso Augustine and Nico Law each recorded their first interceptions as Tigers. Both interceptions were aided by pressure on the quarterback.

Jacquille Veii had another big day on the outside with seven catches for 71 yards.

ELON, N.C. -- Towson jumped out to an early lead, but they were not able to sustain as a driving rain and injuries aided the Tigers 13-17 loss at Elon.

The Tigers defense got off to a fast start as Alfonso Augustine forced and recovered a fumble on the first play from scrimmage. Towson was unable to convert a fourth down and turned the ball back over.

On the next possession, Darius Victor scored from four yards out to give Towson the lead.

Later in the first quarter, freshman Shane Simpson broke out of the pack and raced for a 49-yard touchdown.

After injuries left the Tigers very thin at running back, quarterback Connor Frazier put the team on his back and set a quarterback rushing record by running for 132 yards on 20 attempts.

The Tigers had one final drive to win the game. Frazier led Towson down to the Elon 15. After a fumble, Frazier looked to spike the ball with one second remaining on the clock. The officials ruled it came after the buzzer and the game was over.

In just one half of play, Simpson finished with 72 yards and his first touchdown on nine attempts.

Jacquille Veii led the receivers with five catches for 38 yards. Brian Dowling added four catches for 46 yards.

The Tiger defense allowed just 72 yards on the ground and 205 total yards.

Jon Desir led the team with eight tackles, while Eddie Releford added 1.5 sacks.

TOWSON, Md. -- Freshman Lyrics Klugh set a single-game record with 211 kickoff return yards, but it was not enough as Towson fell, 51-30, to No. 5 James Madison at Unitas Stadium.

The Dukes took advantage of a fumble on the opening kickoff to jump out to an early lead.

Towson got back into the game with a one-yard touchdown run from Darius Victor.

The Tigers kept the JMU offense off the field in the second quarter with an 8:32 drive that ended with a Christian Summers eight-yard touchdown reception from Connor Frazier.

Sam Hurwitz would close out the first half with a career-long 41-yard field goal as time expired.

Frazier would connect on second half touchdown passes to Emmanuel Holder and Summers. The three touchdown passes for Frazier established a new career best.

Klugh had second-half kickoff returns of 77 and 65 yards on his way to setting a single-game record with 211 yards.

Eric Handy led the defense with 14 tackles and a sack.
