2. The product and the process
4 EPD Vinyl Matt & Flat Matt
Vinyl Matt & Flat Matt from Dulux Trade are part of a range of products
designed to meet the needs of the professional specifier. Vinyl Matt & Flat Matt
paints are produced in two owned sites in the UK located in:
• Slough in Berkshire, England
• Stowmarket in Suffolk, England
During paint production the raw materials are pre-weighed according to the
percentage of each in the formulation. The pigment is then dispersed in a
mixture of the binder and solvent using a variety of machines. The amount and
type of dispersion is product specific and depends on the type of finish
required. Finally tinter is added to correct the colour, the paint is thinned to
viscosity, filtered and filled into the appropriate packaging container
The products are packed in a plastic can with a capacity of 2,5 liters, 5 liters, 6
liters, 7,5 liters or 10 liters; or in a metal can with a capacity of 1 liter, 2.5 liters, 5
liters or 10 liters.
All paint containers are then transported from our sites to a distribution center
and finally to our customers in the UK. Some example of customers include our
Dulux Decorative Centers, decorative merchants and DIY (do-it-yourself)
retailers.
All of our AkzoNobel Decorative Paints manufacturing sites in the United
Kingdom have achieved ISO 14001 standards. Further, all our operations in the
UK have been awarded the Carbon Trust Standard in 2009, 2011 and 2013.
Following the cut-off rules indicated in the PCR, this LCA includes 99%
of the total inflow. Some materials added in small quantities e.g. some
additives have not been considered.
AkzoNobel Decorative Paints UK is one of the first companies in
the country to be awarded all three Carbon Trust accreditations
for Carbon, Water & Waste reduction.

3. Vinyl Matt & Flat Matt products Functional characteristics and Chemical content
6 EPD Vinyl Matt & Flat Matt
Vinyl Matt
A top quality high opacity emulsion based on unique AkzoNobel technology which gives excellent coverage and application
as well as a durable finish which lasts everyday living. It’s binder is an acrylic copolymer emulsion. Suitable for all normal
interior wall and ceiling surfaces *. For places where condensation is a problem e.g. some kitchens and bathrooms, it is
recommended to use Dulux Trade Diamond Eggshell.
Vinyl Matt Light & Space
An attractive matt finish with market leading opacity. Suitable for interior use on all normal interior wall and ceiling surfaces.
It’s binder is an acrylic copolymer emulsion. This paint uses the Lumitec technology that helps reflect up to twice** as much
light around the room, making even the smallest rooms look and feel more spacious compared to our conventional emulsion
paints with a similar hue (colour family) and chroma (intensity of colour).
Flat Matt
A water-based matt finish. It is an acrylic copolymer emulsion paint suitable for interior use on all normal interior wall and
ceiling surfaces. Uses the Lumitec technology that helps reflect up to twice** as much light around the room, making even the
smallest rooms look and feel more spacious compared to our conventional emulsion paints with a similar hue (colour family)
and chroma (intensity of colour).
Content of Chemical Substances
Under the EU’s DPD (Dangerous Preparations Directive ; 1999/45/EC) none of the products in this EPD have any
materials/substances hazardous to health and the environment, or are allergenic, carcinogenic, mutagenic or toxic to
reproduction, present in such a concentration in the product that they meet requirements for those products being subject to
labelling according to the legislation.
*Compared to previous formulation pre-March 2014.
**The light reflectance value is always greater than our conventional emulsion paints but may not reflect twice as much light in every case, depending on the colour chosen
4. Environmental performance – LCA
7 EPD Vinyl Matt & Flat Matt
The Environmental performance was calculated using LCA (life cycle analysis). All major steps from the extraction of natural
resources until the final disposal of the product are included in the environmental performance of the manufacturing phase
(cradle-to-grave).
This study was conducted following the product category rules (PCR) published by the International EPD system: “CPC 3511-
Paints and varnishes and related products”.
Site-specific data has been retrieved for the year of 2012. For some of the raw materials, generic data has been used
according to the suggested sources in the PCR.
Paint production yields no commercial by-products. Thus, there is no need for allocation in this specific process.

FUNCTIONAL UNIT
The environmental performance of the Vinyl Matt &
Flat Matt Paints refers to 1 m2 of painted surface. See
next page for further information.
SYSTEM BOUNDARIES
The environmental performance of the Vinyl Matt &
Flat Matt Paints is constituted of three life cycle phases:
upstream, core and downstream.
3. Functional Unit
8 EPD Vinyl Matt & Flat Matt *In low to normal traffic areas
According to the PCR 3511 Paint and varnishes the declared unit should be the amount of product needed to cover the
surface area of 1 m2 of substrate. Further specifications are presented in the table below.
All Vinyl Matt and Flat Matt products in this EPD belong to the CPC Subclass: 35110 - Paints and varnishes and related
products.

5. End-of-Life scenarios
9 EPD Vinyl Matt & Flat Matt
*We have been carrying out extensive research to understand the fate of our products and packaging. We have been in contact with suppliers and waste management
companies to understand the End of life of our products.
** It is assumed that the polymer in the paint ending up in landfill will degrade into CO2 in a 100 year perspective. In landfill, the calcium carbonate in the paint will remain
stable.
There is no statistical information about the fate of paint and paint containers in Europe. Based on extended research*
and our knowledge of the market and the product, the below numbers are our best available estimates of the current
End-of-life situation of paint and paint containers in Europe.
The end-of-life emission factors used for the Global Warming Potential are based on the carbon content of each of the paints.
For landfill the emission factor varies between 0,04-0,11 kg CO2-eq./kg paint depending on each paint’s formulation**
For incineration the emission factor varies between 0,05-0,13 kg CO2-eq./kg paint depending on each paint’s formulation

6. Characterization Factors for Results
10 EPD Vinyl Matt & Flat Matt
In accordance to the International EPD system programme instructions, the following characterization factors were used:
The characterization factor used for POCP specific to the VOC mix during paint application is 0,29 kg C2H4e
The General programme instruction rules sets certain environmental indicators to be reported in this EPD; besides from these
required indicators the following environmental indicators are also reported in this EPD:
• Air emissions: CO2 (fossil), SO2, CH4 (fossil), NOx, VOC and NMVOC (Non-Methane Volatile Organic Compounds).
• Human toxicity (cancer and non-cancer) and Ecotoxicity calculated using the USEtox model.
