Keith was awarded a Gold Medal for her colored drawing entry, and Sharon Guo received the BEST IN SHOW honor for her painting. Both of these talented young ladies’ pieces will be on display at NRG Center's Hayloft Gallery during the rodeo and have a chance of being selected as Champion or Reserve Champion and go to auction at the rodeo! If you plan to visit the rodeo this year, we encourage you to stop by the Hayloft Gallery to view the girls' incredible artwork. Oak Hills Jr High By: Shannon Sedoff For the first time in Montgomery ISD history, all 10 of our schools participated in the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo - Art Show. Students who participated in the competition created drawings and paintings with western themes while following strict guidelines set by the HLS&R judging committee. All ten schools' submissions arrived at Oak Hills a few weeks ago, and we had the honor of having three volunteers from the Conroe Art League judge the art work and decide which pieces would move on to the HLS&R semi-finals. The decision was not an easy one! The judges selected 22 pieces from some very talented students to proudly represent Montgomery ISD.

Coding at SCE

SCE students are on their way to learning coding in the

computer lab. Coding is what makes it possible for us to

create computer software, apps and websites. Mrs.

Jones is teaching this skill in a variety of ways including

using Ozobot paths and the smart board. What a fun and

useful skill to learn at such an early age. Thank you so

much to Mrs. Jones for your innovative teaching.

Lone Star Elementary By: Elisa Krug

A select group of fourth grade students participate in the Leadership Academy Texas every other Monday.

Officer Wilika Williams of the Montgomery ISD Police Department, and school counselor, Kim Wunderlich,

facilitate the group lessons. This group calls themselves “Leadership Lions”, and they are most excited about

further developing their leadership skills. This past Monday, Officer Williams shared a video with the group

where she was being tazed in order to develop her skills as a police officer. The students were amazed and

mesmerized at the great lengths Officer Williams goes to in order to keep developing her skills.

Students at Lone Star are reaching new heights, one goal at a time! Students selected “Wildly Important Goals” earlier this school year, but January is a great time to refocus. Special guests from a local martial arts studio motivated all students on Tribe Day with their message of setting "SMART" goals that are: Specific, Motivating, Achievable, Relevant and Trackable. All students learned that a goal is simply a dream with a plan and anyone can achieve their goal if they put in the time, have confidence, and check in with friends who support them along the way. This martial arts message was powerful and supports our campus wide model of "The 4 Disciplines of Execution Mountain". Lone Star Leaders are excited to be back at school, celebrate new successes, and climb mountains in 2019!

Madeley Ranch Elementary By: Renee Sorrell

Our 6thgraders in Mrs. Miller's PLTW Flight and Space class are roaring and soaring into the future as they recently learned about hot air balloons! Students learned that warmer air is less dense than cooler air and this is what makes the balloons fly. These students spent three days learning about the physics and history of hot air balloons. After this, students worked in groups and built hot air balloons that they launched in the cafeteria. Some flew so high they touched the ceiling in the cafeteria!

Last Friday, Madeley Ranch had their SEM showcase for grades third, fourth, and fifth. Parents and other

family members came to the school and roamed the halls to see the projects their students had been working

on during the fall semester each week. There were sculptures, robots, science experiments, newspapers,

movies, demonstrations, and more--all created and designed by our very own students. They loved

presenting their work and discussing the topics they are passionate about to their families, and we loved

seeing our students show off their Mustang PRIDE.

Montgomery Elementary By: Kelly Lowe

An exceptional presentation was given by MISD Police Chief, Marlon Runnels, on the proper way to interact with law enforcement.

Meetings, Presentations, and Interviews, Oh My!

Lake Creek students have been VERY busy from the moment we returned from the holiday break; and on top of all that, have managed to squeeze in important meetings, informative presentations, and exciting interviews.

Lake Creek Students were treated to a special interview with MISD Superintendent, Dr. Beau Rees, who appeared as a guest on ManeStream-tv’s weekly news talk-show “This Week at Lake Creek”.

Lake Creek welcomes current 8th graders from Oak Hills Junior High to learn about the campus they will be attending next year as freshman, and to learn more about the elective courses they will be choosing upon their arrival.

Our MES Leadership Academy under the direction of Officer West and Mrs. Lowe is doing great things for kids. The group is comprised of 20 students who are learning how to be the best person and leader they can be. Our service project for the 2018-2019 school year is decorating placemats and lunch bags for our Montgomery Country Meals on Wheels program. We can't wait for people in our community to have a message of hope and love with their meal.

Mr. Guerry helped

students understand

the permanence and

the impact of social

media, and how to use

social media tools to

their advantage.

Our MES student body was treated to an amazing assembly upon returning from the holidays. NED's MINDSET Mission took our MES Bearcats on a journey filled with humor, yo-yo'ing, magic, puppetry, and storytelling, inspiring our students to never give up, encourage others, do their best, and believe in the POWER OF YET. The timing was perfect as our MES Bearcats are making goals and resolutions for 2019!

Mrs. Wieghat's class and the rest of our fabulous 4th grade teachers had a very special guest speaker, Adrienne Paquette, a wildlife biologist and educator with the Texas Wildlife Association. The topic was on soil and learning about the types, sizes, textures, and colors. This was a great opportunity to learn about science in a fun way. Science ROCKS at MES!

Library Happenings by Dr. Janet Fick

The Oak Hills Junior High Book Club will start reading the book, Not If I Save You First by Ally Carter, on January 29, 2019. Books will be provided for the students. Students will need to make the commitment to participate in the four meetings on Tuesdays from 2:45 to 3:45 and to read the book at home. Summary:

Six years ago, Maddie lived in Washington D.C. with her father, a Secret Service agent assigned to the president's family, and her best friend was Logan, the president's son; but after her father was wounded in an attempted kidnapping, the two of them moved to a remote cabin in Alaska. Logan never replied to her letters--but now he has suddenly turned up on her doorstep, and, while she has no intention of forgiving him for his silence, she soon realizes that first she has to save him from the winter wilderness and the men who are pursuing him.

Traveling Mural by Amanda Robinson

Madeley Ranch Library participated in the “Traveling Mural” project. We began this project by reading Niko Draws a Feeling by Robert Raczka and Keith Haring: The Boy Who Just Kept Drawing by Kay Haring. Students then chose to paint their mural with anything significant to Montgomery and Madeley Ranch. The mural included the Texas flag, our school dogs Cowboy Charlie and Lady Charlotte, the Houston Astros, the Texans, Lake Conroe, and so much more! Once the mural was completed, we cut it into 10 one-foot pieces and mailed them to 9 different schools. Students are so excited to receive the pieces from schools around the world to form a community mural.

When students returned from winter break, they saw that the old library had been replaced by a new and improved Academic Success Center. The center includes lots of seating, a coffee bar and computers accessible to students.

“It’s a great learning environment and a great socializing environment,” library aide Mrs. Joan Parker said.

The new name of what used to be the library, the Academic Success Center, was chosen by students in a survey earlier in the year.

To create the design of the center, the school turned to “Library Ambassadors,” a few students from each grade. Among their other responsibilities, the Library Ambassadors were given a budget to choose and purchase books to stock the new library’s shelves. The Ambassadors selected the genres of the books based on the results of the aforementioned survey.

Mrs. LaBruyere expressed her excitement for the future of the Academic Success Center.

“I am most excited about this area being the heart of our campus!” LaBruyere said. “Just within the 1st week of its grand opening, it has been filled with students and staff. I love that the front entrance is open. It gives off a positive and welcoming vibe!” From the MISD Libraries
