TRADITIONAL BUILDING AND CONSERVATION

SKILLS AND TRADES

MEATH REGISTER 2017

In dealing with a historic building for anything other than routine maintenance,

professional input is essential and tradesmen with traditional skills are needed. Using

incorrect, inappropriate or unnecessary methods and materials can do a great deal

of expensive damage.

The list below is not comprehensive and is being continually updated. The inclusion

of a professional consultant, craftsman or tradesman on this list is not an indication

of Local Authority approval of their skill or experience, merely that they have

represented themselves as having such skills.

A list is available also on the website of Heritage Contractors,

ARCHITECTS

(either specialising in particular aspects of conservation, or working regularly in

Meath – please refer to the Royal Institute of Architects of Ireland website for a full

list of practioners)

RIAI Conservation Accreditation System

To assist Consumers in the selection of a Practice to provide them with professional

services in architectural conservation, the RIAI developed an accreditation system to

recognise differing levels of specialist expertise.

There are three Grades of Accreditation, Grade I being the highest and Grade III the

basic entry level to the System.

RIAI Conservation Architect/Practice Grades I and II

An Architect or Practice accredited at either of these Grades has been assessed by an

expert Accreditation Board which carries out a rigorous in-depth evaluation of the

specialist qualifications, expertise and experience of the applicant. The difference

between Grades I and II relates to the length of experience, the level of expertise,

and the nature of the buildings. To be accredited as a Conservation Practice at Grade

I or II the practice must have on its staff at least one architect of the relevant Grade,

or have been assessed and accredited by the Accreditation Board on the basis of its

collective track record.

Architect/Practice Accredited in Conservation at Grade III.

An Architect accredited at Grade III is not assessed by a Board, but must attend an

RIAI Conservation Induction Module covering basic general information on the

principles and practice of conservation, and successfully complete an Assessment

Exercise. To be accredited at Grade III an Architectural Practice must have at least

one owner – a ‘Partner’ or ‘Principal’ – who holds accreditation at Grade III.

An Architect accredited at Grade III is expected to have a good general

understanding of the legislation, philosophy and technical requirements, but not to

have the range of expertise to carry out all the tasks undertaken by Grades I and II.

The RIAI Conservation Induction Module (the requirement for Grade III) was

introduced in 2001 as a means of providing RIAI architects and architectural

practices with skills in conservation which were not included in architectural

education and training in the past but which developments in legislation have made

essential for any practice. This is now regarded as the basic level of expertise that

maintain the architectural integrity of the structure, whether by the owner’s

“Protected Structure”, (or for both reasons). Should you require it, we would be

We pride ourselves in offering our clients the highest standard of conservation

practiced on the island. In so doing we abide by the following standards of best

practice. We respect all aspects of the work of our predecessors, paint, glass, and

lead. We intervene only when it is necessary to protect, or preserve a window, and

where non-intervention would likely result in further damage to a window. The basis

for conservation is the belief that the original materials are important and thus

worth the effort of conservation. We hold that best practice in stained glass requires

that where possible, and when practical, all the original materials of a window are

retained.
