Back in Spring 2016 we were approached by Dunchurch Boughton Junior School to recruit an apprentice Teaching Assistant to support the delivery of the Key Stage 1 curriculum to their students with special educational needs (SEN). Our Business Development Advisor, Molly Ashwell supported the school with the whole recruitment and selection procedure to attract and select candidates that were best suited to the role and assisted with the shortlisting and interview process. New look training centre coming soon...

Having worked with Coventry City Council (CCC) for over a decade, Heart of England Training are now working with CCC's Apprenticeship team to continue to deliver our Ofsted rated Outstanding training. To maximise the opportunities for local young people looking to work within their Local Authority and become involved with a well established and innovative apprenticeship programme, we have jointly developed a series of Talent Pool Recruitment events. Riv Monsell, Business Development Advisor wanted to put together the scheme to assist potential applicants who either lacked confidence or the resources and equipment to apply for an apprenticeship. The Talent Pool scheme provides candidates with a fully supported environment where they can gain a better understanding of the application process, the nature of the roles available and access support with their applications and CVs to enable each person that attended left with an interview opportunity and increased confidence about their future prospects.

Hardip Shouker from the Apprenticeship & Early Careers Team has been involved with the conception and delivery of these events and offers informative presentations to outline the opportunities available whilst giving real examples of career progressions into senior roles within the council. Speaking about the initiative, she commented: "Our Talent Pool is an ongoing recruitment process for Coventry City Council Business Administration Apprenticeships. We attend regular events at Heart of England Training to attract the highest calibre of young people looking for a successful career with one of Coventry’s largest employers.” After two events, we are already starting to see a number of candidates being interviewed and offers for full time apprenticeships have been made and accepted. If you think a new approach to apprenticeship recruitment would be of benefit to your company then please contact your Business Development Advisor (details overleaf) for more information.

Apprenticeship Reforms From May 2017The Apprenticeship Reform is a Government initiative to deliver 3 million quality apprenticeship starts across England by 2020. Apprentices starting on NEW ‘standards’ from May 2017 will be required to spend 20% of their time participating in off the job training and will take an independent end point assessment. That said, few ‘standards are available as yet so for many new starts the current apprenticeship ‘frameworks’ will continue until ‘standards’ are released.

Apprenticeship funding for May 2017 summary

• Employers with less than 50 staff will receive a £1,000 incentive to take on a new 16-18 year old or a 19-24 year oldwith educational support requirements or care leavers. They will be required to contribute 10% (approximately £200 - £300)towards the cost of all 19+ apprenticeship starts from May 2017.• Employers with over 50 staff and a wage bill of less than £3 million will be required to contribute 10% towards the cost ofall new apprenticeship starts from May 2017.• Employers with a wage bill of £3 million will be required to pay the apprenticeship ‘levy’ at the rate of 0.5% and subject to a£15,000 allowance. For example an employer with a wage bill of £5 million will pay £25,000 less £15,000 = £10,000 levy tospend on apprenticeships + 10% Government top up. Once this allowance is spent, levy payers can have furtherapprentices funded as per the bullet points above.

These major changes are fast approaching and we are following a detailed roll out plan at Heart of England Training with monthly communication via our email employer update. Our business development staff will be making appointments to talk you through the changes over the coming months. Questions in the mean time? Please contact your Business Development Advisor – details below.
