This edition includes NYC University’s citywide professional development opportunities for the upcoming 3

months. Our goal is to increase awareness of what trainings are available throughout our Association and to

provide you with the information that you need as you complete your 2015 development plan.

We know to be true that one learns better through doing versus

hearing and seeing. Therefore you have been hearing about the

70/20/10 Learning Model and are encouraged to continue to

incorporate this model into your personal development process.

The model is described below:

70% On-the-Job Development - Seventy percent of learning and

development takes place from real life, challenging on-the-job

experiences, tasks, and problem solving.

20% Coaching - Twenty percent of learning and development

comes from coaching, feedback, and observing and working with

role models.

10% Formal Training - Ten percent of learning and development

comes from formal training.

NYC UNIVERSITY REMINDERS

When attending a YMCA of Greater New York citywide training, there are a few things to keep in mind:

Trainings will begin at the advertised time. The training door will close 15 minutes after the training

has begun, so please be on time.

Food will not be provided at citywide trainings. Unfortunately, we will no longer be able to provide

breakfast or lunch at trainings. All trainings over 4 hours will include coffee, water and a meal break.

Enroll for trainings via CONNECT. Please be sure to enroll in all Branch and citywide trainings via

CONNECT. Your seat for a training is confirmed only after your supervisor approves your request and

you are listed as “Enrolled.” Please remember that a status of “Requested” or “Waitlisted” means that

you are not enrolled in the training.

The Art of Budgeting

Are you new to budgeting or budgeting at the Y? Join this half-day training on budgeting best practices.

Financial experts will work with participants to review the budgeting process, from forecasting to reviewing final

reports.

Intended Audience: The training is a requirement for all branch Program Membership and Resident Directors.

All Business Managers and Program Directors must attend one of the Project (Government Contracts) Training

sessions.

Hyperion Budget Training Are you responsible for preparing the budget for your department or program and are new to the process? Hyperion is a centralized, web-based planning, budgeting and forecasting tool. The software allows users to track next steps, view reports, analyze information and submit budgets to their supervisor via CONNECT. Hyperion budget training will provide instruction on how to use the software to effectively manage the budgeting processes.

NOTE: Previous attendees are not required to attend but are welcome. If you are new to the budgeting

process, this training is mandatory.

Intended Audience: Staff who are new to preparing the annual Branch budget

2016 Annual Campaign Leadership Summit….Save the Date!

The 2016 Annual Campaign Leadership Summit will be held on September 25, 2015 at Scandinavia House

located at 58 Park Avenue, Volvo Hall, New York, NY 10016. Details will be announced in mid-August.

YMCA Healthy Lifestyle Principles Would you like to learn about the principles of healthy lifestyles, and take the first step in the YMCA Health and Well-Being certification courses? This training provides practical and theoretical information for instructors of all YMCA Health & Well-Being programs, including information on effective leadership, basic physical activity and healthy lifestyles principles, and program safety guidelines. This course also covers the YMCA mission, philosophy, and the national program training and certification system. This is a Y of the USA training.

Intended Audience: Healthy Lifestyles Staff

TRX Suspension Training Course

With the versatility of TRX Suspension Training® you’ll have a portable fitness solution to train clients in any

setting. You'll learn how to properly perform and cue foundational Suspension Training exercises as well as the

benefits and target muscles of the exercises. Learn modifications and progressions to adapt the exercises to

every fitness level. Upon completion of this course you will be able to: properly perform a variety of

Suspension Training exercises, progress and regress exercises for all fitness levels, adjust resistance and

stability for all exercises, cue and correct common faults, correctly set up and use the TRX Suspension Trainer.

TRX Functional Training Course Participants will learn to how to leverage TRX’s movement based training approach on the TRX Suspension

Trainer and Rip Trainer to teach Foundational Movements and progressions and then apply to a variety of

training equipment. Beyond Suspension Training and Rip Training, these other modalities may include:

Kettlebells, Medicine Balls, DVRT Ultimate Sandbags, Battling Ropes and Bands. Upon completion of this course

you will be able to: apply foundational movement methodology on the TRX Suspension Trainer and TRX, Rip

Trainer to better modify intensity for a variety of modalities, integrate advanced TRX coaching and cueing

techniques and lead pre-programmed, multimodality, circuit-based training workouts.

Mandatory Armatus™ Child Abuse Prevention Training This is a mandatory risk management training that aims to help us protect our clients from abuse and our

employees from false allegations. This course must to be completed by all employees within the first 30

days of employment. Completing this course is a condition of continued employment with the YMCA of

Intended Audience: All Staff of the YMCA of Greater New York within 30 days of employment.

Face-To-Face Child Abuse Prevention Training This is a mandatory, in-person training for all afterschool, summer camp, child watch, early childhood,

teen and youth sports staff. This course must to be completed within the first 90 days of employment

and annually thereafter. The training will educate and prepare staff to identify and handle potential child

abuse incidents. Participants will learn signs and symptoms of abuse and maltreatment, reporting

procedures, and tips to preventing allegations.

Speak with your supervisor, your branch Youth & Family Director or HR representative for information on

when this training will be offered at your Branch.

Intended Audience: Afterschool, Summer Camp, Child Watch, Early Childhood, Teen & Youth Sports Staff within the first 90 days of employment and annually thereafter.

Training Best Practices Do you want to facilitate a training at your Branch or improve on your facilitation skills? This interactive

training is designed for those interested in improving their skills in front of the training room. It is also a

of the Trainer Community. This training will guide participants through the preparation process, share best

practices and anecdotal tips for improving their skills in front of the room. Curriculum development will also

be discussed. Participants will walk away with a training plan, some thoughtful feedback and next steps

for creating a successful training experience for others.

Human Resources Processes This training will review the lifecycle of an employee’s tenure at the YMCA and how to handle the various

AS400 Member Management Basic Training Do you want to learn how to manage membership records through the AS400 database? AS400 Member

Management Basics is a hands-on training that provides instruction on association membership policies and

operations as well as all basic transactions completed at the membership desk. This includes membership,

program registration, guest pass transactions, group discounts and child care programs. Successful

graduates of this training receive certification numbers which grant them access to the AS400 system.

Program Staff, Please Note: The morning portion of the training will consist of content that is relevant to

both Membership and Program staff. At the end of the morning content Program Staff will be given their

AS400 credentials and be dismissed; receiving credit for the training in CONNECT. The afternoon content will

cover topics relevant to Membership.

Creating Raves: Service + Hospitality Do you know that the YMCA of Greater New York is committed to consistently providing excellent service and

caring hospitality to all of our constituents including staff, members, guests and program participants? As a

result of that commitment, we are offering this learning opportunity for direct service staff to introduce the

philosophy and behaviors of the powerful combination of service and hospitality. This training will: 1. Introduce

the philosophy and language of Hospitality 2. Provide opportunities for staff to practice Hospitality Behaviors

and 3. Explore the powerful combination of excellent service and caring hospitality. Facilitated by HQ, the

learning and consulting company of restaurateur Danny Meyer’s Union Square Hospitality Group (USHG), and

supported by the Staff Development team, this will be an interactive, inspirational, informative and important

experience for all.

Leadership Certification is a credentialing process specific to the YMCA. Leadership Certification is based on

the Leadership Competency Model and is a way for you to build the leadership skills, abilities and knowledge

to succeed in the Y. This At-A-Glance provides the basic requirements needed. For details on the

certification, courses and test/assessment view the Leadership Certification Handbook on Y Exchange

(www.yexchange.org) Email questions to [email protected].

Key concepts regarding the levels of certification:

Each level of certification has distinct requirements, including formal training courses, electives, pre-

requisites, and a certification test based on leadership competencies.

It is recommended that each level take approximately 2-3 years to complete in order to effectively

develop the competencies at each level.

Staff members want to pursue the certification level that is related to their current role. Please see the

description of the leadership levels below to determine which certification is the best for you to pursue.

The YMCA Team Leader Certification is designed to help prepare staff members as they transition into

team leadership responsibilities.

The primary focus of the YMCA Team Leader Certification is to inspire and motivate staff toward a career in

the YMCA; provide knowledge of YMCA history and mission imperatives; and provide foundational knowledge

of the following leadership competencies at the Team Leader level: Commitment to YMCA Mission; Member,

Community and Movement Driven; Commitment to Inclusion; Volunteer Driven; Commitment to

Assessment. Forty (40) of the one hundred and sixty (160) must be earned by attending Y-USA

courses, events, workshops or leadership roles.

Please note: You may earn more than 160 LCC’s in a Recertification Cycle. Credit earned above the 160 required LCC’s for certification may not be carried over to the next Recertification Cycle.

The Recertification requirement also applies to those who earned the Professional Director and

YMCA Organizational Leader Certification

The YMCA Organizational Leader Certification is designed to prepare staff members for organizational

leadership roles. There are two tracks to choose from:

Track 1 provides foundational knowledge of select leadership competencies at the Organizational Leader

level.

Track 2 provides knowledge of select leadership competencies at the Organizational Leader level specific to

individuals who are preparing for or who have just entered Organizational Leadership roles and who are

selected through an application process.

Continuing Education:

Continuing Education is required for the YMCA Multi-Team or Branch Leader Certification and the

YMCA Organizational Leader Certification. A variety of activities count for Continuing Education Credits

including formal courses, graduate degrees, conference workshops, seminars, teaching and facilitating,

writing, participating in AYP learning circles, and serving in leadership roles. For more information on

& Leadership Development section on Y Exchange (www.yexchange.org).

YMCA Leadership Competency Model - Levels of Leadership

Leadership Recertification At-A-Glance

Recertification is required to maintain YMCA Multi-Team or Branch Leader Certification and the YMCA Organizational Leader Certification. The Recertification requirement applies to those who obtain the new Leadership Certification and those who previously earned the Professional Director and Senior Director

Certifications. This at-a-glance lists the requirements for recertification. Submission of Recertification Credits will be done through the LCDC (https://lcdc.yexchange.org) • You may submit Leadership Competency Credits for Recertification at any time during the 5-year

Recertification Cycle • Keep track of progress towards the 160 Leadership Competency Credits needed for Recertification

TO BEGIN ENTERING LEADERSHIP COMPETENCY CREDITS FOR RECERTIFICATION: To input credits, log in to LCDC (https://lcdc.yexchange.org) and follow the instructions below: 1. Navigate to My Records 2. Click on Online Applications and Uploads. 3. Select Submit Renewal/Recertification Credits

4. Select Certification Category – Leadership Certification 5. Select Certification that activity applies towards 6. Select Renewal/Recertification activity category

7. Select Renewal/Recertification activity subcategory 8. Input responses for information about the activity (will vary depending on category and subcategory) 9. Click Submit

AUDITING To maintain the integrity of the recertification process the Y-USA will randomly audit recertification submissions. It is not necessary to submit supporting documentation when applying for recertification unless it is specifically stated to do so (for example, with masters or doctorate degrees and with projects). However, if you are chosen for audit you will be asked to submit supporting documentation. You should therefore maintain documentation of the activities you submitted for credit until you receive confirmation of your credits from Y-USA.

YMCA LEADERSHIP COMPETENCY SELF-ASSESSMENT:

The Leadership Competency Assessment is now available on the Y Exchange.

This assessment has been designed to provide feedback about your strengths and development

opportunities as they relate to the 18 Leadership Competencies.

Knowing your leadership competency strengths and development opportunities can assist with your Y career

planning. Assessment Results provide a foundation for creating a written Development Plan and discussing

your career goals with a trusted advisor or coach.

Here are the instructions for how to access the Leadership Competency Assessement.

How to access the Leadership Competency Assessment: 1. Go to www.yexchange.org and log into your account. If you have not set up an account on yexchange,

then follow instructions to set up your personal account.

2. Once you are at the homepage, click on the “Leadership Development” tab and then on the

“Learning & Career Development Center” link.

3. Click on the “Leadership Competency Resources” link on the left side of the page under the “Leadership Development Approach” heading.

4. On the “Leadership Competency Resources” page scroll down to “Individual Leadership

Competency Assessment and select the “Go to Online Assessment Tool” link.

5. If you receive this security message, click on the yellow banner where it says “Click here for more

options.” A drop down menu will appear, choose the “Display blocked content” option.

6. Click on the “Take the Assessment” tab. Then click on “Start New Assessment.”

7. In the pop up box titled, “PayPal Payment” click on “Submit Payment to PayPal” at the bottom.

Y-USA LEADERSHIP COMPETENCY MODULES:

Introduction to Leading Others Having successful leaders at the YMCA is critical to the overall success of YMCAs. Introduction to Leading

Others is a two-day course that focuses on what it takes for team leaders with just a few years of experience

to be successful. The course includes “how-to” topics for day-to-day tasks to higher level strategies for

coaching and effectively leading staff. Topics include: Behavioral Interviewing, Essential Employment Laws,

Coaching, Delegating, Your role as a YMCA Leader, and How Leaders make an Impact. This is a Y of the

USA training.

Intended Audience: Staff with Supervision responsibility or staff without supervision responsibility who provide leadership to a department at a Branch.

Principles & Practices:

Principles & Practices (P&P) is a core YMCA training program designed to inspire, educate and motivate

YMCA professionals to become cause-driven leaders. The training encourages a deeper commitment to the

mission and the movement by increasing participants' understanding of the YMCA organizational culture and

by providing opportunities for networking and individual growth. Completion of this program is a requirement

for YUSA's Team Leadership Certification.

The cost to attend P&P is $725. Spaces are limited and fill extremely quickly, so talk to your supervisor so

you can register early.

This is a signature training program for new entrants in their first one to three years of full-time employment

with a focus on what makes the YMCA unique.

IMMIGRANTS & REFUGEES (ELESAIR) Starting out as a small English language program operating within the International YMCA, it has become

one of the city's largest community-based Adult Literacy programs. ELESAIR is now a one-stop assistance

center where immigrant adults with little means and limited English skills can obtain the full range of

services - instructional, vocational, placement and support - so essential to their prospects as New Yorkers.

The YMCA of Greater New York offers free ESL, ABE, GED Preparation, Citizenship classes and other services,

accepting participants on a first-come, first-served basis.

NEW AMERICANS WELCOME CENTERS (NAWC) The YMCA of Greater New York is committed to serving the immigrant population of New York City, and, in

response to their needs, has opened six New Americans Welcome Centers to help immigrants achieve literacy,

cultural competence, and self-sufficiency. The goal of the YMCA is to be recognized by every New American

as a “safe haven” that provides multilingual information, resources and referrals and a wide range of services

(instructional, vocational, recreational, and family support) that will help them attain their goals. The New

Americans Welcome Centers are located in Chinatown, Harlem, Bronx, Park Slope, North Shore and Flushing.

Instructional services include English as a Second Language, Cultural Orientation, Citizenship Preparation,

Job Readiness, and Computer Literacy. In addition, some of our Centers offer Adult Literacy and GED

preparation classes as well as Substance Abuse and Alcohol Prevention Counseling. For more information or
