I believe the presentation will be put on the portal for parents. They explained what is the same about Secondary school and what will be different. Your child already has an understanding of the major differences about Secondary School and we encourage you to talk with them about this. They will need your support and guidance with organization and time management as they settle into Year 7. The main differences are the schedule/timetable, students studying 8 subject areas, the House program and students having Houseroom everyday from 7:30-7:45am. The Houseroom teachers will be your first point of contact and parents can contact individual subject teachers with specific concerns or questions. There will be a parent seminar in August to explain the Middle Years Program (MYP) and assessment (students receive grades in the Secondary School.) There will also be the Back to School Night on August 25 th for parents. Our NLCS program (NIST Learning Community Seminars) offers a wide variety of parent seminars on everything related to curriculum, assessment, technology and social/emotional issues. You will receive a hard copy of a Parent Handbook and information can be found in the Secondary section of our website/portal. When you want to report a student absence from school you can email [email protected] . That email address goes to all Secondary main office staff (administrators and secretaries) and someone will field your question and respond in a timely fashion. The Secondary Learning Support department offers after school homework help Monday through Wednesday. All students are welcome and encouraged to attend. Right now the students are participating in various events to help with their transition into Year 7. They will be attending three House sessions (May 19, May 26, June 2)and will have a transition day (May 24 for 6AR, 6GD, 6SS) and May 27 for 6DH and 6CB) where they will attend three different Year 7 classes. They will eat during the earlier Secondary lunch time that day but can still receive their meal plan as usual. The students have already had two lessons with me about transition, have met Randy, and we will have one more specific to friendships. They will also be working with Mr Will about the technology side of the transition as they will receive laptops next year. Your child will need a lock for their locker. It would be a great idea to teach them how to use a lock this summer! Next year the Year 7 lockers will be located on the main level of the new Secondary building right near the main office. This will facilitate them using their lockers and being close to key people who can support them. Please don’t hesitate to get in touch with your child’s teacher or myself if you have any questions or concerns about their transition into Year 7. It’s a very exciting time and we’re all here to support them with a happy and successful transit ion. Transition Parent Information Session – notes by Ashley Sleeth

Dear parents,

Here is some information that was shared with parents at last night’s transition session for parents.

The Secondary leadership team (Julian, Cynthia and Nicole) ran the session and the Year 7 Counsellor Randy was also

introduced and shared some tips with parents. I believe the presentation will be put on the portal for parents.

They explained what is the same about Secondary school and what will be different. Your child already has an understanding

of the major differences about Secondary School and we encourage you to talk with them about this. They will need your

support and guidance with organization and time management as they settle into Year 7. The main differences are the

schedule/timetable, students studying 8 subject areas, the House program and students having Houseroom everyday from

7:30-7:45am. The Houseroom teachers will be your first point of contact and parents can contact individual subject teachers

with specific concerns or questions.

There will be a parent seminar in August to explain the Middle Years Program (MYP) and assessment (students receive grades

in the Secondary School.) There will also be the Back to School Night on August 25th

for parents. Our NLCS program (NIST

Learning Community Seminars) offers a wide variety of parent seminars on everything related to curriculum, assessment,

technology and social/emotional issues.

You will receive a hard copy of a Parent Handbook and information can be found in the Secondary section of our

website/portal. When you want to report a student absence from school you can email [email protected]. That email

address goes to all Secondary main office staff (administrators and secretaries) and someone will field your question and

respond in a timely fashion.

The Secondary Learning Support department offers after school homework help Monday through Wednesday. All students

are welcome and encouraged to attend.

Right now the students are participating in various events to help with their transition into Year 7. They will be attending

three House sessions (May 19, May 26, June 2)and will have a transition day (May 24 for 6AR, 6GD, 6SS) and May 27 for 6DH

and 6CB) where they will attend three different Year 7 classes. They will eat during the earlier Secondary lunch time that day

but can still receive their meal plan as usual. The students have already had two lessons with me about transition, have met

Randy, and we will have one more specific to friendships. They will also be working with Mr Will about the technology side of

the transition as they will receive laptops next year.

Your child will need a lock for their locker. It would be a great idea to teach them how to use a lock this summer! Next year

the Year 7 lockers will be located on the main level of the new Secondary building right near the main office. This will

facilitate them using their lockers and being close to key people who can support them.

Please don’t hesitate to get in touch with your child’s teacher or myself if you have any questions or concerns about their

transition into Year 7. It’s a very exciting time and we’re all here to support them with a happy and successful transition.
