Inner Transition“A group to explore and support the inner dimension of the Transition process, bringing insights and practices from psychological, spiritual and other relevant traditions.

How does what is happening inside us shape the outer world?

If we need an outer Transition to make our systems for transport, food, energy and shelter into something sustainable and healthy, what is the inner Transition that goes with this?

What does this inner Transition look like for individuals, groups and communities?”

FOOD

buy local,grow your own

Eatseasonal,

Waste less food

Why?

If we all stop wasting food that could have been eaten, the effect would be like taking 1 in 4 cars off the road. It would also save the average family with children £50 a month.

How?

Use your fridge and freezer. If you’ve cooked too much, eat the leftovers for lunch tomorrow or pop it in your freezer as a handy meal when you haven’t got the time or energy to cook properly.

Be inventive. Can those leftover veggies in the bottom of the fridge be used in a pasta sauce? Or put in a curry?

Check out www.lovefoodhatewaste.com for all sorts of tips about how to reduce your food waste.

This leaflet has been produced by Transition Malvern Hills, a group dedicated to making a positive and planned response to rising oil prices and climate

change, which will put us in a stronger position to deal with the consequences.

Local

LOW CARBON FOOD

Producing and distributing food uses a lot of energy – oil is used in chemicals and fertilisers, as well as in the vehicles that carry food from the farm to our plates. In fact, food accounts for nearly a third of most people’s energy use, so making a few small changes can make a big difference.

Buy local

Why?

Buying locally grown and produced food means less pollution from transport, less congested roads and more money in the local economy.

How?

In the shops – look for local food. If it’s not clear where the food has come from, ask.

Country Market – every Friday from 8.30am -11am in the Lyttleton Rooms, Church Street. Local and homemade produce including fresh vegetables, flowers, cakes, honey, jams and pickles.

Farmers Market – every 3rd Saturday of the month in Abbey Road. All produce sold must be local, and you have the chance to talk to the farmers directly.

Remember to walk to the shops or market, though – if you make a round trip of more than 4 miles in your car to collect food from your local farm shop, you’re using more energy driving than you’re saving by buying local (compared to veg box home deliveries).

Page 15: Transition Towns€¦ · Gardening Group - Get involved and help your community gardening IYN RHS awards entry for 2012!. Wilderness Garden, Elgar Avenue, Malvern. ÔSPLATÕ Community

Grow your own

Why?

From food miles to food steps – less pollution and congestion, and you know exactly what chemicals have been used (or not) when growing your food.

How?

If you’ve got some space, just take some seeds or plants and put them in the ground. Add water and wait. For a lot of plants, it’s really as simple as that!

If you don’t have space sprout some seeds in a jam jar on your windowsill, or grow a few small pots of herbs on your doorstep.

If you’d like to grow more than you can fit in, try out Transition’s garden share scheme. We’ll match you with someone with space in their garden. Contact Wilma for more details. [email protected] 01684 891273

Got too many tomato plants? Sack loads of seeds you’ll never finish planting? A mountain of marrows? Then Swap It! Plant It! Malvern is for you. Yahoo Group: http://v.gd/PlantSwapFacebook Group: http://v.gd/PlantSwapFB

Eat seasonal food

Why?

Most food is only ready to harvest for a short period each year. Out of season food will have been imported, kept in cold storage, or grown in heated greenhouses, all of which use a lot of energy.

How?

Ask the people you’re buying your food from.

Look on the internet.

Sites such as www.eattheseasons.co.uk provide advice about what’s in season, and sometimes provide seasonal recipes too.

Cookery courses.

Try out Our Lizzy, a Malvern-based cookery school with classes on cooking with seasonal food. www.ourlizzy.com 01684 892688

Eat organic

Why?

Recent research has shown that organic farming uses significantly less energy than chemical-intensive farming.

How?

In the shops – look for food labelled ‘organic’. Most of the supermarkets have a growing range of organic food.

Specialist organic shops such as GreenLink Organic Foods on Graham Road stock a good range of organic food and drink.

Home delivery of a regular box of organic food. Check out www.vegbox-recipes.co.uk to find a supplier that suits you.

Eat less meat

Why?

Growing grains and pulses to feed to animals is much less energy efficient than eating them ourselves.

How?

Why not start off with meat-free Mondays, or become a weekday vegetarian.

There are plenty of books and magazines full of vegetarian recipes. Try out the library or one of our local bookshops for inspiration.

If you’d rather go to cookery classes, try out Our Lizzy, a local meat-free cookery school. www.ourlizzy.com 01684 892688
