The Liveliness of Wood as aBuilding Material
We feel very comfortable when sur-rounded by this material. That’s whyleading architects and constructionengineers prefer wood as a warm, natural building material whendesigning gardens and buildings, particularly when it comes to interiorfinishing. The coziness of wood andits unmistakable character is the rea-son it is used so often.
WOOD IS A NATURAL MATERIAL And Rightfully a Popular Material
Premium Protection UsingNature as a Model
Trees are equipped with a naturalmeans of protection – and that is thebark. Bark protects tree wood fromdrying out and particularly from themultitude of weather influences suchas sun, wind, rain, frost and heat.
Trees are supplied with all the impor-tant nutrients they need to grow andflourish through their roots. This sup-ply system protects the life cycle oftrees throughout centuries and thetrees themselves form an environ-ment that provides safety forhumans and animals.
Remmers Baustofftechnik made ittheir goal early on to develop prod-ucts with the help of their technicaldevelopment department thatrestore this natural protection forwood used in construction and fin-ishing in the form of state-of-the-artcoating systems. Wood in its thou-sands of structures and shades ofcolour is the base for the use of thenew translucent coatings and finish-ing paints that are available fromgood specialist dealers.

WOOD’S NATURAL ENEMIESThe Course of Damage Caused by Moisture, Blue Stain and Rot
UV-Rays
Sun is hard on wood surfaces – notjust because of its heat but alsobecause of its ultraviolet rays thatpenetrate into the wood. In combina-tion with precipitation, the colour ofunprotected wood can change to sil-ver grey in just a few weeks tomonths.
Fine wood fibres on the surface ofthe wood then begin to stand uprightand the surface begins to losestrength. This change in colour andproperties of the surface which isnormally not desired can be prevent-ed by using pigmented coatings.
UV Weather Protection Stain or LongTime Stain UV in clear UV+ now allow wood used in outdoorareas to be treated with a clear stainfor the first time, thanks to highly eff-fective UV-blockers which preventthe wood from turning grey for quite awhile.
Algae
Especially in forested or tree-richareas, the green growth of theselower organisms speads easily, quickly making wood in outdoorareas look unattractive.
HK Stain is formulated with an algae-cide which prevents premature infes-tation with algae.
Moisture
Wood outdoors is continuously sub-jected to moisture: rain, dew, con-densation and such like cause themoisture content in the wood to rise;when the water evaporates, the con-tent sinks again. The result of thiscontinous process: cracks in the sur-face. Moisture that penetratesthrough these cracks or through dif-fusion must leave the wood again, otherwise the wood becomes water-logged beneath the surface – abreeding ground for blue stain androt that destroy wood.
That’s why it’s important to select theright coating for the wooden buildingelements:
In the case of windows and doors, so-called dimensional stability is particu-larly important. That’s why thick-layerstains are used for these: The penetra-tion of moisture is prevented by thecoating which in turn prevents swellingand shrinkage processes that causethe element to lose its shape and then, for example, can’t be opened or closedproperly anymore.
In the case of so-called non-dimen-sionally stable building elements,e.g. siding and fences, the penetra-tion of moisture, e.g. through endgrain wood or through cracks, cannever be completely prevented. That’s why it’s important to use so-called thin-layer stains here so thatthe wood can breathe and the mois-ture can leave the wood again.
Blue Stain
Blue stain is a type of fungus thatdiscolors wood, causing visible,black-bluish stains. Blue stain doesnot destroy the wood but it certainlyimpairs its appearance.
However, blue stain prepares theway for other fungi that destroywood (rot) to flourish because it per-forates the cell walls, making it easi-er for the wood to absorb more water(capillarity).
Rot
Rot is the most dangerous form offungus that causes damage becauseit destroys the structure of the wood;the wood loses its stability anddecomposes.
Insects that damage wood
Along with fungi that discolor anddestroy wood, there are also animalpests which love wood. TheEuropean house borer, for example, isone of the most dangerous insectsthat destroy wood in moderate cli-mate zones and infest soft wood inparticular. They lay their eggs incracks and the larvae preferablygnaw the outer layers. The damagecaused by other insects that destroywood essentially takes place by thesame principle with the samescheme. The eggs are laid by theinsects in or on the wood. The larvaehatch from the eggs and it is then thelarvae that actually destroy the wood.

THE DURABILITY OF DIFFERENT TYPES OF WOODWhen to Use Wood Refinement – When to Use an Additional Preservative?
Whether it’s necessary to use achemical wood preservative on woodused outdoors depends on the dura-bility of the type of wood used. As arule, ‘very durable’ and ‘durable’types of wood only need refinementwith products that do not contain

durable
Building elements subjected to weather require protectivetreatment with an approved wood preservative
biocidal ingredients. ‘Moderately’ to‘non-durable’ types require a chemi-cal wood preservative to protectthem from, e.g. blue stain and rot.But the classification of wood typesonly refers to the heartwood.Normally, commercially available
wood also contains sap wood whichis not generally durable. These typesof wood should not be used in out-door areas without a chemical woodpreservative.
STRUCTURAL WOOD PROTECTIONDon’t Give Moisture a Chance
Building elements should also beplaced so that contact with water isavoided if at all possible. If this is notpossible, it must be ensured that the
wood can dry again quickly. Woodbuilding elements should also beconstructed so that permanent wet-ting through standing water is avoid-
ed (sloped surfaces, rounded edges, covers on horizontal surfaces).
Protective treatment with a wood preservative is not necessary
Classification of the types of wood

Preliminary work
° Remove old coatings that do notadhere well
° Sand rough wood and old coat-ings – this improves the adhesionof the coating
° Brush off dust with a duster
° The wood must be clean and freeof wax and grease
° Cover the area with plastic sheetsand, if necessary, mask surround-ing areas with adhesive tape
° Remove resin galls with a fillingknife
° Wash off resin stains with a thin-ner
Tools
° High quality tools considerablyimprove results
° Natural bristle brushes should beused for solvent based coatingsand acrylic brushes for waterbased products
° Some of the Remmers productscan also be efficiently applied withhand-held spraying equipment
GENERAL NOTES ON WORKINGFor Coatings That Are Perfect
Directions
° All Remmers products should bestirred well before using to distributepigments and binders evenly
° All Remmers products are ready touse and do not need to be diluted
° Different shades of the same prod-uct can be intermixed but as a rule, different products should not beintermixed
° Non-resistant (soft) wood in outdoorareas should be impregnated with awood preservative before they areactually coated. When HK Stain or Wood Cream isused, this step is not necessary. These products provide comprehen-sive protection
° Always brush the products onto thewood in the direction of the grain
° After the coating has dried, coatagain
° Observe the application rates: Usinga lot does not necessarily help a lot.
Remmers premium products aredivided into five core product cate-gories.
Each of the product categories forprotecting and refining wood inindoor and outdoor areas have dif-ferent colours and easy to under-stand symbols for fast identificationof their range of use.

Tips & Important Information:
When you use HK Stain, an additional woodpreservative primer is not necessary. HKStain is a ‘2 in 1’ product and formulated withthe most comprehensive wood protection.
To achieve top, silk gloss surfaces, we rec-ommend an additional coat of Long TimeStain UV. Light-coloured translucent shadescan be kept permanently light by applying anadditional topcoat of Long Time Stain UV in‘clear UV+’.
Notes on Working:
The substrate must be clean and dry andcan be recoated without sanding or strip-ping.
Set up a trial area first to check the coloureffect on the respective wood substrate. Ifyou observe these tips, results will be per-fect!
Use wood preservatives safely. Alwaysread the label and product informationbefore using.

Tips & Important Information:
Wood Cream’s formulation protects againstblue stain & rot. The product is a real cream– not a gel stain. That’s why it can penetratedeeply and be applied in just one workingoperation on rough sawn wood. A secondworking operation may be necessary fordressed wood and hardwood,. WoodCream is simply applied with a brush usedfor solvent based stains.
Notes on Working:
Because of the cream consistency, it iswell suited for overhead work. There’s noneed to cover everything.
Use wood preservatives safely. Alwaysread the label and product informationbefore using.

Tips & Important Information:
Decorative Wax Stain can be applied in anespecially thin layer with a soft linen cloth.Relatively little material is absorbed by thesurface and the wood fibres have less ten-dency to stand upright and make the surfacelook rough. If the surface is still too roughafter drying, smooth with fine sandpaper andapply another coat of Decorative Wax Stain.
Versatile Possibilities for Use
As special as the use of Decorative Wax Stainis in indoor areas, the possibilities for use areuniversal. Treated surfaces of furniture, pan-els and wall facings look matt and feel likevelvet when touched, seeming especially nat-ural. Even the colour design of wet roomareas (kitchen & bath) can be integrated. Thestain’s hydrophobizing properties also pro-vide an outstanding water repelling effect.
This high quality, ecological product can alsobe used on floors as a colour giving primer(thin with 25 % water!). Afterward, the flooris sealed with Hard Wax Oil or Stair &Parquet Varnish.

Thick-Layer Translucent Coating on anAlkyd Resin Base
Windows and doors made of wood areespecially expensive. Important here is notonly their attractive appearance; thesebuilding elements must also function prop-erly. UV Translucent Top is so thick that justone coat produces a protective layer thatwill last for many years. Its gel-like consis-tency makes it pleasant to apply and drip-ping and splashing are avoided. UVTranslucent Top was designed to meet thehighest requirements.
Notes on Working:
Because of the consistency of the prod-uct, it is especially suitable for overheadwork. It’s not necessary to cover every-thing.

Tips & Important Information:
UV Opaque Top is used as a primer andintermediate coat as well. With this so-called ‘one pot product’, an additionalwood preservative, e.g Wood PreservativePrimer, is only needed for non-resistanttypes of wood.
Perfect Renovation – from Bottom toTop:
After years of weathering and when mainte-nance measures have not been carried out, windows, doors and other wood construc-tion elements are often so damaged thatnot just the surface coating but even thesubstrate has clearly lost substance. It isthen high time to thoroughly renovate win-dows and doors. With UV Opaque Top, theprimer, intermediate and finishing coat allcome out of one can.The coating’s espe-cially high and permanent degree of whiteguarantees a brilliant appearance for manyyears and the weather resistance and elas-ticity of the coating guarantee a long serv-ice life.
Notes on Working:
Apply UV Opaque Top in thin layers.Thicker layers considerably delay dryingtime.
For good results, the substrate must beclean, dry and free of grease and salt.

SEALING PRIMERWater Based, Special Coating for Light-Coloured Finishing Paints and Lacquers
Properties
° Prevents yellowing ° Weather resistant and
moisture regulating° Dries quickly ° Water based° Highly opaque / matt

Range of use
° Old coatings (load-bearing)° Balcony railings ° Carports° Roof eaves ° Ceiling panels ° Facade facings° Windows / shutters° Arbours ° Palisades / pergolas° Doors ° Wall panels ° Fences / screen walls
Application rate:° 2.5 l are sufficient for coating
approx. 33 m2
° As a primer: 2 x 70–80 ml/m2
° As a finish: 3 x 70–80 ml/m2
Tips & Important Information:
Sealing Primer does not replace a wood preser-vative impregnation agent! For species of woodthat are not sufficiently resistant (particularlysoftwood) that are used outdoors, we recom-mend impregnation first with Remmers WoodPreservative Primer before applying SealingPrimer.
Notes on Working:
The best possible sealing effect is achievedwhen Sealing Primer is applied in two thinlayers, allowing to dry for at least 4 hoursbefore applying the next coat.
The first layer binds water soluble sub-stances in the wood. The second layereffectively seals these off.
