Context of the event in Piraeus The meeting was aiming at presenting and analyzing all dimensions that "Blue Growth» has for Europe and for our country, especially in times of economic crisis and substantial reforms in spatial and urban planning and coastal zone management. The title of the meeting "Integrated development through land-sea interaction: dimensions and perspectives of blue growth in Greece" clearly shows the emphasis on unfolding the territorial potential of coastal areas and ports and stressing the interest on the maritime dimension of Europe 2020 Strategy by using the triptych of smart, sustainable and inclusive growth.

• The event, through a series of thematic priorities and documentation by specialists and experts highlighted the forms of land-sea interaction as elements of a combined integrated coastal zone management and an effective Maritime Spatial Planning that is expected to be formed in the coming years in the context of the European Blue Growth strategy and the Territorial Agenda of the EU 2020.

Some facts • A three-days event that brought together :• 120 stakeholders, transnational ( ESPON, CPMR, MED

Programme, DGMARE, EGTCs..), National (Ministries, national research bodies..), regional and local, plus academics and researchers

• 600 participants, venue : Piraeus Port Authority• Aegis : 2 ministries, Decentralized administration of the Aegean, City of Piraeus

and the PPA

Why Piraeus ?

• The selection of Piraeus as the reception area of this event was designed to highlight its importance for both our country and Europe as well. Besides, Piraeus, the largest port in Greece and one of the most important Mediterranean ports will host the European Maritime Day on 28 and 29 May 2015.

• This meeting intended to be and became a forerunner of the European Maritime Day in all Blue Growth issues. Thus different stakeholders were invited to attend the meeting, public and private bodies, as well as experts and researchers in relevant matters.

Territorial Agenda of the EU 2020:

• Maritime activities are essential for territorial cohesion in Europe. ........

• The Marine Strategy Framework Directive and EU Integrated Maritime Policy call for coordinated actions from Member States on maritime spatial planning. Such planning should be integrated into the existing planning systems to enable harmonious and sustainable development of a land-sea continuum.’

• ‘Blue Growth’ initiative aims to elaborate the maritime dimension of the Europe 2020 strategy: "smart, sustainable and inclusive economic and employment growth from the oceans, seas and coasts".

• Supported by the Directive for Maritime spatial planning

INTEGRATED SUSTAINABILITY that blue growth will not damage the fragile marine environment and will make a powerful contribution to combating climate change.Protection and reservation of habitats and ecosystems and of marine biodiversity.

ESATDOR : Areas for research to maximise opportunities, but minimise human impacts on marine assets

Some general outcomes related to “Blue growth”

• Integrated and intersectoral approach is needed• Blue and green growth go together • Blue growth potentials are diverse in different maritime

regions• Climate change may challenge potentials in fisheries

and eventually in coastal tourism • Exchange of experience between maritime regions

focusing on governance issues • Blue growth requires information both on land and sea

activities and opportunities and mapping of the sea• Promoting skills and innovation is a prerequisite• Stimulate performance and competitiveness• Strengthening sustainability • Boost competitiveness and sustainability, unlock the

potential for growth and jobs

Findings and Conclusions follow

All aspects of "Blue Growth" were presented, analyzed

and discussed and conclusions will be published in a

collective volume that will be disseminated to policy

makers and during the European maritime day, in May

2015, organised by DGMARE.
