German optics are the best. Being able to see exactly what you are doingis half the battle with micro-surgery. Each eyepiece contains a number oflenses which means that a high magnification of the operating field ispossible while maintaining normal position of the head relative to thepatient, i.e. a focal distance of between 340 to 420mm. There are anumber of variables to think about.

• Magnification. 4X is as high as one should go. 2.5X is the most common.

• Working Distance.Choose between 340mm and 420mm whatever is normal for you.

• Spectacle type frame(you can fit your own prescription lenses) or head band.

The entry level loupe from Heine. Cost effective and economical.Available on a frame or lightweight head-band. Cannot be fitted tospectacles. Supplied as shown above in a plastic carry case. Placing the sterile tip on the cornea generates a digital pressure reading.Supplied in aluminium carrying case together with 100 probes. Furtherinformation, including published papers are available on request.

TonoVet is based on a new ‘induction impact principle’, where an ultra lightprobe touches the cornea very gently. As such, no topical anaesthetic isrequired. Usually the animal does not even notice so sedation is seldomneeded.

The clear benefit compared to the ‘pen’ type tonometer is TonoVet’s lowforce on the eye. The probe weight is a mere 26.5mg with a contact time of0.3 millisecs. The ‘pen’ type probe actually bends the cornea.

In practical terms this means that intra-occular pressure can be measuredby the Tonovet within an hour of surgery. With ‘pen’ types you have to wait4 to 5 hours.

Uses standard AA batteries. c.f. the custom expensive ‘pen' type ones.
