Travel Insurance Buyers’ Guide Part 7: Travel Insurance FAQ
Travel Insurance FAQ
What type of cover is best?
If you only make one or two trips abroad each year, buying single-trip cover each time may
be the cheapest option. However, a growing number of people are opting for the cost
savings and convenience of annual travel insurance. If you travel more than a couple of
times a year, then annual cover is definitely worth considering. For more information, see
the Comparing Travel Insurance page.
What is an excess?
An excess is the first part of any claim that an insured person has to pay. This differs from
insurer to insurer - check out the info on our quote pages.
Do annual policies cover travel within the UK?
Yes, most annual policies offer cover within the UK. It's worth checking to see exactly what's
covered.
If I take my golf clubs with me, how much are they insured for?
Cover is not normally provided for golf clubs as part of a standard policy. However, some
providers allow you to upgrade your policy to include cover. Alternatively you might want to
check to see if they’re covered under your home insurance policy.
When does cancellation cover commence?
If your policy includes it, cancellation cover applies from the moment you buy. It ends on
your departure. This, among other things, is a great reason to get your travel insurance as
early as possible.
What is ‘scheduled airline failure’?
If a flight doesn’t go ahead due to the airline’s insolvency, this stipulation will cover you for
costs made prior to its departure. It applies when the money paid cannot be refunded by the
airline in question, or other protection schemes such as ATOL. This covers inbound and
outbound journeys. Other conditions usually apply, so please read your policy documents for
more information.
Is there a limit to the number of days I can be abroad on an annual policy?
Annual multi-trip policies tend to limit the number of days you can spend abroad during any
one trip. Some also limit the maximum total number of days you can spend abroad, so it's
worth checking before you buy. Under our standard insurance, the limit is up to 31
consecutive days. If you need longer, we have specialist providers who can quote for such
circumstances.
Do annual policies cover travel within the UK?
Yes, most annual policies offer cover within the UK providing your trip is for one or more
nights in pre-booked accommodation.
Why can’t I buy a family policy if my child is over 17?
This is a stipulation that our travel insurance providers use. If you need a policy to cover
your child who is 18 or older then you can either enter the total number of travellers under
the adults, or buy a couple’s policy and purchase a separate policy for your children.
Do annual policies cover ski and snowboarding trips?
Some annual travel insurance policies include ski and snowboard cover, but you are usually
limited to a maximum number of days each year.
Can I ski and snowboard off-piste?
Usually yes, so long as you are accompanied by a qualified guide or instructor.
