A very Merry Christmas to all and a warm welcome to our latest

newsletter which aims to highlight some of the great work that

has taken place across the Partnership. It has been a fun, PE &

sport filled autumn term; the information you will find in this

newsletter merely scratches the surface of all the activities that

have been delivered and the positive impact PE and sport have

had on the young people in our Partnership Schools.

The introduction of the Sports Premium funding at the start of

this term has undoubtedly given schools the opportunity to

increase both the amount and breadth of sporting opportunities

for their children and enhance the quality of PE delivered. I am

pleased to let you know the Chancellor of the Exchequer's

recent Autumn Statement revealed that the Sport Premium will

originally only been guaranteed for two years.

Finally from me, thank you to all of the sport partnership team,

Jordan then went on to win Young Volunteer of the Year at the County

Awards.

St Leonard’s U14 Football Team recently won The Northern Echo Local

Heroes Team of the Year Award after becoming National Champions last

season.

Congratulations to all the nominees and award winners!

Table Tennis returned for our secondary schools with

competitions for U13 and U16.

The standard of table tennis is constantly improving

with a lot of hard work and practice taking place in

schools.

The following teams won their competitions and will

compete in the County School Games in March…

Chester-le-Street U13 Boys – Fyndoune CC

Chester-le-Street U13 Girls – Roseberry College

Chester-le-Street U16 Boys - TBC

Chester-le-Street U16 Girls - TBC

Durham U13 Boys – Belmont Community School

Durham U13 Girls – Durham Johnston School

Durham U16 Boys – Framwellgate School Durham

Durham U16 Girls – Durham Johnston School

23 schools, with over 700 Key Stage 2 pupils, came

along to a windy Meadowfield to compete to earn their

place to represent Durham and Chester-le-Street at the

County Cross Country Competition in March.

There was a tremendous effort by every single

competitor with the final finisher in each race running

across the line.

In the morning event Cestria shone - claiming a team

victory in the Year 3/4 boy’s race and the Year 5/6 girl’s

race. Finchale also had strong Year 3/4 competitors,

winning the girl’s race and finishing second in the boy’s

race. Bluecoat had some great performances across the

board and gained first place in the Y5/6 boy’s race.

The afternoon races had some very strong teams with

the best score of the day coming from St Margaret’s in

the Year 5/6 Girls race, with St Margaret’s team also

winning the Year 5/6 Boys race. In the Year 3/4 races it

was Shincliffe who came out on top in the girls’ race

and Newker triumphed in the boys’ race.

There was individual placing for runners from

Edmondsley, Ouston, Pittington and St Godric’s.

Good luck to all the runners at the County Finals in

March!

This year we had a huge response from schools and

the festival was incredibly popular, 12 schools entered

with a massive 50 teams taking part in total!

A lot of children had never played a game of hockey

before and some had never even picked up a hockey

stick! The festival gave them a chance to improve their

basic hockey skills, learn the rules and experience

competition in a fun and exciting environment. They

even got to experience playing on a water-base pitch

like professional hockey players.

Everyone looked to be having a great time throughout

the whole festival. A big thank you to the young leaders

from Hermitage who came along to referee and score

the games, you did fantastic.

We hope Quicksticks will be just as popular next year.

Deerness Gymnastics Academy hosted the Gymnastics

Showcase festival in October with 7 schools entering.

Each school took to the floor in turn to perform some

fantastic routines. It was clear all the children had been

practicing their gymnastic skills and working hard on

their routines, with some great props and costumes. All

the routines were performed to a packed audience of

family and friends - thank you for your support.

After all the schools had performed 4 girls in year 7 at

Durham Johnston, who train collectively for more than

20 hours a week at Deerness Gymnastics Club, took to

the floor to perform a routine involving lots of

tumbling. They were all amazing and their

performance was a great way to round off the festival!

Once again the Leadership Academy has been hugely

popular with over 100 successful applicants.

56 of these applicants attended the launch day at

Freeman’s Quay in October, where they got to learn

some key leadership skills and meet other likeminded

young leaders from different schools.

During the day they got to take part in 3 workshops;

FUNdamentals, Warming Up and Being a Leader. The

FUNdamentals workshop introduced the leaders to the

ABC principle, of agility, balance and coordination, and

gave them the opportunity to come up with games and

activities to develop key skills. In the Warming Up

workshop the leaders were given a taste of how they

can lead a fun warm up with and without equipment.

The Being a Leader workshop had 2 parts, the first a

health and safety quiz which got the leaders to think

about key situations, giving a rationale for their answer.

Plus there was a prize for the winning team throughout

the day! Then County Durham Sport gave a

presentation about volunteering hours, qualifications

and what happens next.

The young leaders are now fully equipped with skills and

knowledge to succeed in their leadership journey and will

complete many hours volunteering in schools, clubs and

with the SSP. At the end of the year those who have

completed 50 or more hours will be invited to a

celebration event.

Those who excelled in last year’s Academy were invited to

be part of the Leadership Champions. There are currently

8 students from Durham & CLS who are part of either the

coaches, officials or media academy. From this they get to

further their leadership skills and learn specifically about

their chosen pathway, whilst gaining a qualification.

Good luck to everyone with their leadership and

volunteering!

Leadership Academy Gymnastics Rowing

Durham Amateur Rowing Club hosted the Indoor

Rowing competition for our secondary schools in

November.

The first race of the event was the sixth formers who

had to row 2000m in the quickest time, it got the

competition off to a great start and gave the younger

ones a real feel for the event and got everyone into the

spirit.

Then the year 7’s took to the ergo’s with the races

working up to year 11, an extra minute of rowing added

for each year group. There were some fantastic races

some with only 1m in it!

The top in each race from Durham & CLS qualified for

the county finals. At the county finals both our areas

had great success and did us proud.

Well done to all those competing.

The U11District Squad have also had an impressive start to

the season!

On 19th October the boys headed out for their first fixture,

a 7-a-side inter-district tournament at the Sunderland

Academy of Light. After a tough start against the eventual

winners, the boys battled their way to finish in 3rd place

behind Darlington and Sunderland! They showed excellent

commitment and attitude throughout, and thoroughly

deserved their bronze place!

13 schools took part in this year’s Tag Rugby

festival, with each school having a team in the A

section of the competition. In total there were 21

teams with some schools bringing B and C teams to

take part in a separate competition.

In all of the games there were some fantastic

dodging and tagging which impressed England

Rugby player and Community Coach Tamara

Taylor, who was on hand to offer some advice to

teams and referees.

After winning their respective groups in the A

section, Pittington and Silver Tree were through to

play in the final. In the B section, Cestria and

Bluecoat won all of their games to come top of

their groups.

On to the final and with a crowd of supporters

from the other schools the pressure didn’t get to

Pittington or Silver Tree, who played with great

skill and confidence in a very tight match. But

there had to be a winner and it was Pittington who

claimed the victory in extra time. They will now go

on to represent Durham City at the County

Durham School Games in March.

Meanwhile Key Stage 1 got in on the tag action too,

with their own festival of over 300 children.

The festival aimed to give the children a taste of tag

rugby and learn fundamental skills. They were split

into 2 groups with each getting the chance to play

games and try out the skill stations. For the majority

of the children this was their first experience of tag

rugby and from the smiles of their faces they were

enjoying it!

On the skill stations the children got to learn how to

pass the ball, score a try and dodge away from

people – all of which they could then put into

practise in the mini games.

This was the first time we have ran this event, we

hope you all had lots of fun!

Thanks to the leaders from Durham Sixth Form

Centre and Roseberry for helping out at the 2

festivals.

Rugby Durham City Primary Schools Football Association

Then on 7th December the Year 6 boys faced Darlington in the

first round of the 9-a-side Derwent and Medomsley Cup. In

the 7-a-side tournament Darlington sneaked a last minute goal

for a 1-1 draw. The boys were ready to dig deep in the 50

minute game, to stop a repeat of this result! A strong start

and some excellent link up play led to our first goal in the

second minute of the game. The boys took this momentum

and ran with it – literally! Durham had the majority of the

possession, and dominated the game. Final Score ... 3-0

Durham! Team Managers, Paul Donaghy and Leanne

Weatherburn, said it was the most exciting game of U11

football they had watched in a long time! Durham are now

through to the quarter finals of the cup, where they have

another home draw to East Northumberland in February.

The final fixture of the term saw all boys head off to Stanley

for the inter-district indoor 5-a-side tournament. With most

districts bringing 2 teams, the boys had plenty of opportunity

to show off their talents in this fast paced game! Again, the

boys showed great team spirit, with the B team coming out as

runners up in their group!

Well done to the boys on an excellent start to the season, and

here’s to the same in 2014!!!

Everyone put on your Dancing Shoes as Strictly came

to Meadowfield.

Come dancing was introduced as a taster festival this

year and we had 260 children from 10 different schools

take part.

There were 4 different dance styles for everyone to try;

contemporary, street, bokwa and salsa! There were

some great little dancers with everyone giving their all

and learning some new moves. We had some excellent

hip movements in the salsa session!

A huge thank you to Gemma and Jess, Tin Arts and

Bowka instructor Catherine Elliot for your sessions -

they were amazing!

ARRIVALS TIME TO TRAVEL

Throughout November six Y5/6 competitions have

been held at Fyndoune, DCBC, Park View, Durham

Johnston, Framwellgate & Belmont. 25 primary

schools brought a team of girls and boys to take part in

a range of track and field events including; obstacle

relay, 4x1 relay, speed bounce & vertical jump.

The atmosphere at each of the competitions was

electric, with everyone showing real team spirit and

getting behind all the athletes, and with some tight on

the line finishes in the track events it was vital everyone

gave their all.

Three records have been broken in this round of

competitions all by girls. The first record to be broken

was by an athlete from St Margaret’s in the Standing

Long Jump who jumped 2.02m, the Chest Push was the

next record to fall with an impressive 7.64m by a young

athlete from Framwellgate Moor Primary. A West

Rainton athlete broke the Soft Javelin record by 1m

with a throw of 16.1m.

The winning team at each of the 6 competitions went

on to the SSP final on the 11th December. The 6 schools

competing for a place in the School Games were;

Ouston, Silver Tree, Cestria, St Margaret’s, Bluecoat

and Belmont.

The standard at the final was exceptionally high; it was

clear every team had been training hard for the final.

No team disappointed with exciting races and high

scores recorded all round in the field events.

But there had to be a winner and this year it was St.

Margaret’s team who clinched victory and took the

champions title, they will represent Durham City at the

School Games in March. Cestria came in second and

they also qualify for the School Games as the Chester-

le-Street representative. The SSP wishes both teams

the best of luck.

The secondary schools also had their chance to

compete for sportshall victory with all 9 of our

secondary schools taking part.

As with the primary competitions the atmosphere was

incredible, with a lot of sportsmanship and team spirit

on display, as well as fantastic individual and team

performances; with every point counting towards the

final team score.

The winning positions were changing after each event,

but the final scores were as follows …

For CLS; Hermitage won the Year 7 Boys competition

and Roseberry were victorious in the Year 8 Boys. In the

Year 7 and Year 8 Girls competition it is Park View who

earns a place in the County final. In the Durham

competition it was Durham Johnston who were

triumphant in all the categories and their 4 teams will

represent Durham at the County Durham School Games

in March.
