    O Upsherin means to "shear off" in Yiddish.

    It is derived from the German wordsscheren which means "to shear" and auf

    which means "off."

    Coming of Age: Bar and Bat

    MitzvahO Under Jewish law, children are not

    required to observe the commandments,though they are certainly encouraged andtaught to do so. But upon turning 13, aboy is considered an adult under the lawand is expected to obey all thecommandments from then on. He hasbecome a Bar Mitzvah, or "Son of theCommandments." Similarly, a girlbecomes a Bat Mitzvah, "daughter of thecommandment," upon turning 12.

    a blue Star of David. Also, a yellow star onthe left side of the breast and on the back.

    The requirement to wear the Star of David

    with the word Jude (Juif in French, Jood

    in Dutch) inscribed was then extended to

    all Jews over the age of six.
