BIKUR CHOLIM
One of the most rewarding things about life on kibbutz is the sense of community and caring that exists between the members.
Bikur cholim, “visiting the sick,” is a term encompassing a wide range of activities performed by an individual or a group to pro-
vide comfort and support to those who are ill, homebound, isolated and/or otherwise in distress.
The act of bikur cholim is a mitzvah, a moral and spiritual obligation incumbent upon all Jews to perform. Bikur cholim is an
essential quality of good interpersonal relationships. It reflects the primary Biblical value, “and you shall love your neighbor as
yourself” (Leviticus 19:18). By fulfilling this role, we deeply enrich both our lives and the lives of those we help and or visit.

Mikveh
We are very fortunate to have a true Community Mikveh here in Columbia. The Hanna Schwalbe Mikveh is located in a stand
alone building at Beth Shalom Synagogue. It is truly a place of beauty, spirituality, and serenity that we can all utilize and be
proud of.
Please consider supporting our Community Mikveh by becoming a Mikveh Member for $250.00 per year or by making a dona-
tion to this important part of Columbia’s Jewish community.
Please make your check out to the “Hanna Schwalbe Mikveh” and send to:

FROM THE RABBI
What does it mean to belong?
For some of us, being part of the Jewish community is part of our soul-ular DNA.
We were raised Jewish or we chose to be Jewish. The Sinai moment when we were
all metaphorically present at the giving of Torah is a given. We see ourselves as
Jews without equivocation. In doing so we affiliate with a synagogue, or join the
Federation Board, or become involved with Israel lobbying, or find some Jewish
“group” within which to express our identity. We see world stories and local stories
through Jewish eyes.
For others, Judaism is more complicated. Being Jewish is held with some
ambivalence. We were born Jewish and we might have a proclivity towards Jewish
food or attending the family Chanukah party. But there are other mantles of identi-
ty which for us have stronger pulls; the sports team, the yoga class, the book club.
We may or may not have a Jewish partner. We may or may not seek Judaism out to mark the significant milestones of our lives:
circumcision or naming; bar/bat mitzvah ceremony; nuptials or death. If we do, participation often comes with a sense of family
obligation or feelings of contradiction.
The concept of belonging in Judaism can be even more complicated when members of your wider family or immediate family do
not identify as Jews. Where do you belong? Even describing your identity and how you belong is diverse and often means
different things to individuals: interfaith (perhaps implying two religions); intermarried (perhaps implying one religion where one
has converted); inter-cultural (perhaps implying a merger of religious traditions); a mixed couple; a blended Jewish family;
multi-faith families; a modern family…. the list goes on and on…
This month Tree of Life is holding two specific events. One closed to a particular group, and the other open to all adults. Both
which have in common the wrestling of the question: What does it mean to belong?
The closed event is the Confirmation Trip to NYC where our confirmands and a couple of their parents will explore some of
Jewish New York. We will visit two worship services unlike any to be found in Columbia, SC. We will explore some American Jew-
ish culture, history, and eat Jewish food. Confirmation is a time for teenagers to wrestle with their belief and identification. We
will be opening new vistas for them as they travel that journey.
Later in the month, open to any adult - Jewish, or those who wish to explore Judaism, we begin the first of our two part
“Introduction to Judaism” course. “Introduction to Judaism” is just what it claims to be. It is a course to provide the basics of the
beliefs and practices of Judaism. It is an opportunity to wrestle with, if you want, what it means to belong, and how to make that
belonging your own.
Jews have long wrestled with who we are, what we are, and what we stand for? Our patriarch Jacob was not clear about his own
identity, and wrestled with a “being” (an angel, a human, a dream, his conscience?). He was renamed “Yisrael, one who strug-
gles with God. This had become one of the “other” names for the Jewish people. The struggle of knowing where, who, or what
you are, is a quintessential Jewish struggle.
For those whose soul-ular DNA is undeniably Jewish, wrestling is part of that DNA too, for we are a tradition that questions and
learns and explores. For others with more complicated identity, we welcome you on a wrestling journey. We welcome you with an
invitation to come explore and figure it out with us. Learn with us, be with us, and think about joining our Introduction to Judaism
class. Where do you belong?

RELIGIOUS SCHOOL DIRECTOR
Education Director
January was a very busy month for Tree of Life and Religious School. We started
the month with a Family Ice Skating afternoon downtown on January 3rd after
school. Our Kidz Shabbat on January 8th was a blast! After the service, we made
dirt cake (representative of planting for upcoming Tu B’shevat) and we made a
huge mess!! A big Todah Rabah to Mr. “D” for cleaning up after us, you rock! We
celebrated 120 years of Tree of Life on the 15th with a special service and on
the weekend of the 22nd – 24th, we welcomed artist in residence – Dan Nichols.
Dan was an integral part of our Friday night service and Saturday musical
workshop which culminated in an Acoustic Concert on Saturday Night. On
Sunday, Dan led a very interactive Tu B’shevat seder with the Religious School
students and a great time was had by all. We had a delicious lunch provided by
the programming committee in accompaniment with our Seder. I want to say
that I was so
impressed by
the hard work
put in by all on the committee and a huge
THANK YOU for lunch and for bringing us Dan
Nichols. I also want to say a special Thanks
to our Green Team members, David and Ellen
Potter, Carolyn Hudson, and Alice K. Adams
for providing so much enthusiasm and
experience as they helped our kids plant for
Tu B’shevat and taught them the process of
growth as well. The kids had so much fun
with them, learned a lot, and are excited to
be able to watch the seeds and bulbs grow in
the next coming months. I can not say
enough about our programming committee and our green team and how they are so awesome and inspiring to
our kids in Religious School. We look forward to many more collaborations with all of you. On Friday, January
29th, our services will be led by our Kita Bet/Gimmel class; they have been working so hard and I know they will
do a great job. I also want to thank the Brotherhood for putting together their annual Blood Drive on January
31st, and I hope they have a very successful day. We have a lot to look forward to in Religious School this
February. Our annual confirmation trip to NY will take place soon, as well as our Kita Alef service and Family
Beach night. I hope you will all join us for these exciting events.

Blood Drive
The Tree of Life annual Red Cross Blood Drive was held on
Sunday, January 31st. The Brotherhood wants to thank
everyone who took the time to come out and donate. The
Red Cross was very appreciative of all those who came out,
especially since we are in a time of such shortage. Each
pint may save up to four lives. We will be working with the
Red Cross to set up next year’s date, as we feel this is an
important community event.

BIG NOSH VOLUNTEERS NEEDED, SAPLINGS, AND CAP COLLECTION
The Green Team is happy to announce that this year we will be using compostable food service items to compost along with
food scraps. We will be among the first festivals to take advantage of Columbia's new composting facility, Carolina Resoil,
which will turn our waste into fertilizer.
We plan to have 5 stations where people can dispose of compostable waste, recyclable bottles and cans, and regular gar-
bage. We are looking for volunteers to stand at these stations to assist visitors in placing their waste in the correct bin.
We'd be happy to work with older children or teens. If you or your kids are willing to volunteer, please send an email
to [email protected] stating name(s), time preference 11 AM -1 PM or 1 PM - 3 PM, and whether you prefer indoors or out-
doors.
Thanks go to our Junior Green Team, the Saplings, for weeding the planting boxes so that they will be ready for new plants.
Captains Lillian Altschul and Molly Westfall directed the project.
WHEN YOU BRING IN PLASTIC CAPS FOR RECYCLING, PLEASE MAKE SURE THAT THE CAPS ARE 100% CLEAN. DO NOT IN-
CLUDE YOGURT LIDS, POP TOP RINGS, OR PLASTIC OTHER THAN CAPS. SIX-PACK RINGS SHOULD BE HUNG ON THE RING
TREE. THANKS TO THOSE WHO PARTICIPATE.
