"open your hand" to those in need friend or stranger

The Hebrew word for charity, "Tzedakah,"

means far more than just that. Charity implies kindness performed out the goodness of one’s

heart, but which is by no means obligatory. Tzedakah, on the other hand, means "doing

right," implying an obligation to help others -- financially, materially, spiritually and in any

way possible.

From the Desk of the Secretary

Section 20 of the Florida Digest of Masonic Law states the following: Every member of a Lodge who is six months or more in arrears for dues shall be notified thereof by the Secretary, and in case of failure or refusal to come forward and pay his dues, or give satisfactory excuse, within three months after such notification, may be suspended at the discretion of the Lodge.

Every Mason learns of the importance of the liberal arts and sciences, of which he is instructed they are seven; namely, Grammar, Rhetoric, Logic, Arithmetic, Geometry, Music and Astronomy. Unfortunately few Freemasons today take this instruction with any degree of seriousness and make no further effort to examine the nature of these arts. Like much of Freemasonry, the liberal arts and sciences come to us from the Medieval period, when they were believed to be the sum total of all knowledge that was worth while to a complete education. They were known as "artes liberales" from the Latin "liber" meaning Free. In this sense they were the subjects available to free men and were a contrast from the "artes illiberales", which were taught for purely economic reasons that a man may earn a living. These arts were the operative arts of the workmen and were considered less desirable educational pursuits. While we have adopted the seven liberal arts and sciences from the Medieval era, they were known in the Pythagorean and Platonic eras. The seven liberal arts and sciences were broken into two groups. One concerning language and the other concerning mathematics. The first was the "Trivium" or road of three paths and included grammar, rhetoric and logic. Grammar is that portion of language that allows us to fine tune our speech like the ashlars and remove all barbarous expressions. Rhetoric is the art, which allows us to persuade and have an effect upon the listener. The last and perhaps most important art of the Trivium is logic, which permits us the gift of reasoning. In a purely Masonic sense it allows us to understand our duties to

Continued liberal arts

God and towards each other. The second was the "Quadrivium" or path of four roads and included arithmetic, geometry, music and astronomy. Arithmetic is the process by which we are able to calculate all weights and measures, but in a speculative and philosophical sense can be best summed up by the following quotation: "For the Freemason, the application of this science is that he is continually to add to his knowledge, never to subtract anything from the character of his neighbor, to multiply his benevolence to his fellow-creatures, and to divide his means with those in need." From Mackey's Masonic Encyclopedia

Music

"Legend recounts how Orpheus was given a lyre by Apollo…by playing his lyre, Orpheus produced harmonies that joined all of nature together in peace and joy. Inspired by this Orphic tradition of music and science, Pythagoras of Samos conducted perhaps the world’s first physics experiment. By playing strings of different lengths, Pythagoras discovered that sound vibrations naturally occur in a sequence of whole tones or notes that repeat in a pattern of seven. Like the seven naturally occurring colors of the rainbow, the octave of seven tones". ‘The Harmonic Lyre’ by Stephen Ian McIntosh

Music is a moral law. It gives soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination, and charm and gaiety to life and to everything. Plato

Greetings Brethren, I bid you a happy summer solstice, and would like to take this opportunity to share an article I recently read from "The Masonic Traveler" that I found very suitable for your review regarding the importance of this event and it's Masonic Symbolism. "The summer solstice is when the sun reaches its meridian height and takes its victorious place over the defeated night, we enter into the midyear season and the ushering in of summer. Also, this solar transition represents the holiday of the Masonic Patron Saint John the Baptist, which most Masonic traditions in the West relate to the powerful symbol of the Point Within the Circle. Bro. Albert Pike in Morals and Dogma says: Our Brethren of the York Rite say that "there is represented in every well-governed Lodge, a certain point, within a circle; the point representing an individual Brother; the Circle, the boundary line of his conduct, beyond which he is never to suffer his prejudices or passions to betray him." This is not to interpret the symbols of Masonry. It is said by some, with a nearer approach to interpretation, that the point within the circle represents God in the centre of the Universe. It is a common Egyptian sign for the Sun and Osiris, and is still used as the astronomical sign of the great luminary. In the Kabalah the point is YOD, the Creative Energy of God, irradiating with light the circular space which God, the universal Light, left vacant, wherein to create the worlds, by withdrawing His substance of Light back on all sides from one point. Our Brethren add that, "this circle is embordered by two

continued next page

continued from page 5 perpendicular parallel lines, representing Saint John the Baptist and Saint John the Evangelist, and upon the top rest the Holy Scriptures" (an open book). "In going round this circle," they say, "we necessarily touch upon these two lines as well as upon the Holy Scriptures; and while a Mason keeps himself circumscribed within their precepts, it is impossible that he should materially err." It would be a waste of time to comment upon this. Some writers have imagined that the parallel lines represent the Tropics of Cancer and Capricorn, which the Sun alternately touches upon at the Summer and Winter solstices. But the tropics are not perpendicular lines, and the idea is merely fanciful. If the parallel lines ever belonged to the ancient symbol, they had some more recondite and more fruitful meaning. They probably had the same meaning as the twin columns Jachin and Boaz. That meaning is not for the Apprentice. The adept may find it in the Kabalah. The JUSTICE and MERCY of God are in equilibrium, and the result is HARMONY, because a Single and Perfect Wisdom presides over both. The Holy Scriptures are an entirely modern addition to the symbol, like the terrestrial and celestial globes on the columns of the portico. Thus the ancient symbol has been denaturalized by incongruous additions, like that of Isis weeping over the broken column containing the remains of Osiris at Byblos. And in another text...

The Meaning of Masonry by W.L. Wilmshurst: Masonry, by means of a series of dramatic representations, is intended to furnish those who care to discover its purport and to take advantage of the hints it throws out in allegorical form, with an example and with

Continued next column

instructions by which our return to the "East" may be accelerated. It refers to no architecture of a mundane kind, but to the architecture of the soul's life. It is not in itself a religion; but rather a dramatized and intensified form of religious processes inculcated by every religious system in the world. For there is no religion but teaches the lesson of the necessity of bodily purification of our first degree; none but emphasizes that of the second degree, that mental, moral and spiritual developments are essential and will lead to the discovery of a certain secret centre "where truth abides in fullness," and that that centre is a "point within a circle" of our own nature from which no man or Mason can ever err, for it is the divine kingdom latent within us all, into which we have as yet failed to enter.

And there is none but insists upon the supreme lesson of self-sacrifice and mystical death to the things of this world so graphically portrayed in our third degree; none but indicates that in that hour of greatest darkness the light of the primal divine spark within us is never wholly extinguished, and that by loyalty to that light, by patience and by perseverance, time and circumstances will restore to us the "genuine secrets," the ultimate truths and realities of our own nature. Still yet other texts elaborate further, specifically on the symbolic significance of the circle and how it relates to the sphere of the individual standing within its center. With that in mind, consider the path of the Earth around the Sun and the transition of the season from winter/spring to summer/fall, as we approach the winter equinox to begin a new the celestial battle of light and dark. That perhaps instead of us orbiting the radiant light of the sun, we in

Continued next column

fact are the sun radiating out into the universe that is our domain. In Masonry, we are told that in the middle of that point within the circle is where we, as men, stand. On a less occult topic, it is said that our ancient brethren met on this day in 1717 to form the Grand Lodge of England, so perhaps it is in their memory that we venerate this day and hold it in such esteem. As such, it has become one of our feast days and a time to reflect on our fraternity and brotherhood." Fraternally, Brother Norbert J. Mess

What sign would you like to see in front of your Lodge?

Or

The Pot of Incense is an emblem of a pure heart, which is always an acceptable sacrifice to the Deity; and, as this glows with fervent heat, so should our hearts continually glow with gratitude to the great and beneficent Author of our existence, for the manifold

blessings and comforts we enjoy. Copied from the Florida Masonic Monitor

Addressing the Chair “The rules of order in Freemasonry do not permit discussion during a Communication, among members. The member who has anything to say to the Lodge, whether it be to enter discussion or to make a second to a motion, must rise to his feet and address the Worshipful Master.”

Copied from Masonic Etiquette GL208

Copied from “The Craft and Its Symbols” One symbol, with which you are familiar, is the interlaced Square and Compasses-the “symbol of Freemasonry.” This has been recognized and accepted as the Masonic emblem from the beginning of the 18th Century at least. The United States Patent Office took note of this in 1873. It told a flour manufacturer, and the world: “This device, so commonly worn and employed by Masons, has an established mystic significance, universally recognized as existing, whether comprehended by all of not, is not material to this issue. In view of the magnitude of the Masonic organization, it is impossible to divest its symbols, or at least this particular symbol-perhaps the best known of all-of its ordinary significance, wherever displayed.” The manufacturer was denied the use of the Square and Compasses as a trade-mark.

It was about this time that some unknown “inventor” added a letter “G” in the center of the Square and Compasses. To many American Masons the emblem is not complete without this letter. This is not so in other countries, however. In other languages God does not start with the letter “G”; neither does Geometry. This is but one of dozens of symbols that Freemasonry employs to imprint on the mind “wise and serious truths.”

MASONIC EDUCATION

At Cape Coral Masonic Lodge No. 367

This is an opportunity you long have sought!

Not a lesson on the Lodge’s history. Not about any “famous Freemason”.

FROM THE SOUTH

My Brothers, The time has come for the 187th Annual Grand Communication held this year in Jacksonville. I continued to be humbled to have been elected Junior Warden, and having the privilege of representing Cape Coral Lodge No.367. This year’s Legislation was discussed on the first stated meeting of May, and as a result we are excited to voice the concerns of the Brethren. Also, Congratulations to the newest Master Mason of Cape Coral Lodge No.367, Brother Rich Greer!!! He has worked very hard, and deserves all the praise that can be bestowed upon him. Brother Greer is a true asset for the Lodge!! Finally, we are about to go dark. Keep in mind that, although we only have one stated meeting a month, the Lodge doesn’t close down. Let’s use this opportunity to catch up on a few things around the Lodge. For example, mop the floors, pull weeds, clean up the inside and outside, scrub the bathroom, etc… It’s about time we start having a little pride in the face of our Fraternity. Fraternally,

Scott Peacock, JuniorWarden

BY THE PLUMB.

FROM THE WEST

Brethren, As I write this brief article, I have just returned from the 187th Grand Communication of our Most Worshipful Grand Lodge of F&AM of Florida. I must say the experience was both fun and enlightening. I also had the pleasure of meeting and talking with many new Brothers and seeing Brothers that I had not seen in a while. I highly encourage all Brothers who have never attended a Grand Lodge session, or if has been some time since you last attended to take it under consideration for the next one in 2017. Now my Brothers, I'd like to personally congratulate Brother Steven Scroby on passing his Fellowcratf proficiency. As we go Dark for the second communication in June, July and August, some of us will start to travel. I would like to extend my personal invitation to every Brother who would like to travel to other Lodges in and around the District , Zone and State to send me an email or text. I will then be able to communicate with you as to when and where the wheels take us. As a reminder there is a Fellowcraft Degree scheduled for June 23. Fraternally,

Brother Bruce Rivera, Senior Warden

On The Level..

FROM THE EAST

As the sun rises in the East... The 187th Grand Lodge Annual Communication has come and gone. There was a lot of education and enlightenment, not to mention a good had by all. It was great meeting Brothers from all over the state sharing in some much needed "fellowship". I have to say the Past Masters Degree was a thrill and it was awesome to be a part of. Attached on the last page of this Trestleboard are the results of the legislation that was passed and rejected at Grand Lodge. I would like to congratulate to our newly raised Brother Rich Greer and thank the Brothers of Cypress Lodge for allowing us to bring him down to be raised. My Brothers, Cape Coral Lodge is going through MAJOR changes and I am calling on all the Brothers to start attending our Stated Communications. We are going to start the discussion of possibly selling the building and downsizing due to the increasing operation cost of the building. We have been working on this for a few weeks now and will be moving forward with this ASAP! I know this is a sad subject for many but we are at the end of this road. We need to start thinking about the Charter of the Lodge and not the building. Fraternally, Shawn Lane Worship Master Cape Coral Lodge No .367 215-805-2873

How fortunate can one be, to be "Raised" to Master Mason in an extraordinary lodge and have five Brothers from your own lodge by your side to celebrate the occasion? What better demonstration of Brotherly Love and solidarity could there be? I can't think of a better picture in my memorable past. I want to share my appreciation with Cypress Lodge No.295 for allowing me to join in with their Master Mason Ritual and performing such a superb ceremony. I am also humbled by my Brothers from Cape Coral Lodge No.367 (R∴W∴ Sam Scardina, R∴W∴ John Hardisson, Brother's Diaz, Kauth, Simpson) for standing with me for this historic (for me) occasion. Thank you, thank you, thank you! Brother Rich Greer Cape Coral Lodge No.367

Grand Lodge Communication

WHY FREEMASONRY SURVIVES

Institutions do not survive through the ages by accident; they live only through the possession and operation of everlasting principles. When an organization runs back beyond historic records, and relies upon tradition for the story of its origin, its career during a known period either justifies or falsifies the tradition. An ancestry of virtue and good works is a liberal education. The power of the accumulated wisdom of the past is a resistless impelling force upon the present. The architects, the decorators, the draftsmen, the woodcarvers, the workers in precious metals and the Masons who were building the famous Temple of King Solomon came from every nation in the then-known world. Their union of mutual help, protection, society and improvement was the marvel of an age when all navies were pirates and all nations enemies. Masonry, marching under the leadership of God and the banner that bears the motto, "Love thy neighbor as thyself," with the peasant and the prince, the mechanic and the merchant, the learned and the unlearned following in equal rank and common step, knows neither race nor nationality, neither caste nor condition, as it proudly and beneficially moves down the centuries. Chauncey M. Depew (1834-1928) Financier, U. S. Senator POTS Freemasonry is founded on the immutable laws of Truth and Justice and its grand object is to promote the happiness of the human race. Let's Go To Lodge Tonight!

Author Unknown Let's Go To Lodge Tonight My brother, let's go to Lodge tonight You haven't been for years. Let's don our Lambskin Apron white And sit among our peers. I feel a kind of longing, see, to climb those creaky stairs I know it'll be a thrill for me to lay aside my cares. We'll meet the Tyler at the door and though he'll hesitate, we'll hear him say just as before, Come in or you'll be late. I'd like to get out on the floor Come on, let's get in line I want to face the East once more And give the same old sign. I want to hear the gavel rap the Craftsmen to attention and see the Master don his cap a night without dissention. So come! Pass up that picture show, or your wrestling bout or fight Switch off that TV set! Let's go! Let's go to Lodge tonight.
