It’s hard to imagine a Junegarden without the mouth-watering flavour of straw-

berries and the good news is,planted now, both the everbear-ing and day-neutral varietieswill produce fruit this year.

For serious strawberry growers, however,the June-bearing varieties still produce highvolumes of very large flavourful fruit.

Traditionally, main season strawberryvarieties, planted now, will develop into goodsized plants over the summer and fall, thenproduce great crops next year. You will geta few fruits the first year but they’re just atease for the next season. The flower buds ofJune berries are initiated in the shorter daysof autumn, then produce good crops the fol-lowing June.

Some of the great June-bearing varietiesfor our area are:

• Hood: This variety has very large darkred cone-shaped berries on upright vigour-ous plants. It has great flavour and is terrificfresh and for jams.

• Rainier: The good sized berries of thisvariety maintain their size all through theseason and have great flavour.

• Sumas: This very heavy yielding variety

has lighter red berries and very good flavour.• Totem: This very hardy variety, devel-

oped at the Canada Research Station inAgassiz, is still a favourite for productivityand good sized fruit.

• Stolo: Newer variety with large, firm,glossy fruits which keep their size through-out the season

• Puget Reliance: The beauty of this vari-ety is its generous crops of very large fruitsand its reliability to produce in a wide rangeof growing conditions.

• Chandler: A huge California variety withoutstanding flavour, it does very well on theWest Coast.

Everbearing varieties have the uniqueability to initiate fruit buds during bothshort and long days, providing more continu-ous crops. The day-neutral varieties willproduce fruit under all day lengths and areperhaps the most productive, providing tastyberries all summer and into the fall.

Another distinct advantage of the ever-bearing types is that they can flower and pro-duce fruit and runners all at the same time.The runners will produce fruit even withoutrooting and this unique ability makes themideal for growing in containers, hanging bas-kets and other unusual garden situations.They will also provide good quality fruit thefirst year.

Some of the top everbearing varieties are:

• Fort Laramie: This variety is noted forits vast runner production and is often soldas a ‘climbing’ variety. It has good sized, veryflavourful fruit.

• Quinault: Still one of the best ‘everbear-ing’ varieties, it has good sized, very flavour-ful fruit.

Some of the top ‘day neutral’ varieties are:• Tristar: This variety is still one of the

most popular ‘day neutrals’. It has mediumsized flavourful berries and is very diseasetolerant.

• Seascape: This is a new introductionwith high quality and flavourful fruits thatare red all the way through.

• Albion: A new variety with long conicalfruits having excellent flavour and produc-ing a constant supply of berries throughoutthe summer.

• Eversweet: The medium to large sizedberries of this variety are noted for theirhigh sugar content.

For the best results, all strawberriesneed a sunny location and good drainage.Growing them in raised beds or hilled rowscreates not only good drainage but alsowarmer soil. They love moisture but it mustdrain away quickly to prevent root rot.

Although slightly acid-loving, workingwell rotted manures into the soil will helpget strawberry plants off to a good start.When setting out the plants, it is very impor-

tant to plant them to a depth that just coversthe roots but not the stem. Planting straw-berries too shallow or too deep can causethem to dry out or to rot.

A good liquid starter, like Transplanter5-15-5, used as a side dressing, will help getthem off to a good start. Once flowers set,use a fertilizer like 10-15-19 with micro-nutrients to really size up the berries. If weget a dry spell during the ripening stage andthis applies to the ‘everbearing’ and the ‘day-neutrals’, make sure you water thoroughlyand deeply to keep the plants growing and tomaintain their sweetness.

Strawberries taste great and they alsodo lots of other terrific things for us. TheSalk Institute for Biological Studies in theirresearch on strawberries, discovered that astrawberry flavonoid, called fisetin, can stimu-late signalling pathways in the brain, thusenhancing long term memory. Strawberriesalso lower systolic blood pressure and canreduce the risk of heart disease. This berry isalso high in folate that can help lower the riskfactors in heart disease. Strawberries are alsoloaded with vitamins C and K, contain cal-cium, magnesium, phosphorus and potassiumand are an excellent source of anti-oxidants.

March is a great time to begin planting,so find a spot in your garden and enjoy somewonderful flavour this year and for years tocome.
