TRIBUNEH o l y T r i n i t y E p i s c o p a l C h u r c h FROM THE CO-RECTORS

The first time I looked through a telescope I was about 4 years old. The sky was clear as we began looking through the telescope to find the moon and stars. From my perspective here on earth, the moon and stars looked very small, but that telescope magnified them so that I could see how great they really are.

Psalm 69:30 says this, “I will praise the name of God with a song; I will magnify him with thanksgiving.”

This month, as we celebrate our annual feast of Thanksgiving, by all means enjoy the food (the turkey, sweet potatoes, apple pie, your own personal favorites) but also this year I propose that we use this as an opportunity to magnify God. Thanksgiving is like a telescope. By intentionally giving thanks for all our blessings we bring God’s presence in our lives into sharper focus. Giving thanks actually magnifies God so that we see how big and how powerful God really is.

One simple and fun way to do this is to make an alphabetical list of things that we are thankful for. Here’s my list this year: (I couldn’t narrow it down to just one in some cases.)

Both of my children’s names start with A – Andrew and Abby. Indeed I am very thankful for them both, for the laughter and joy they bring us and for all that we have learned from them.

B is for books and all the amazing things we learn by reading, for bananas that are tasty and good for us, for bread (especially the bread of life) and of course, the beach.

Coffee starts with C and my day always starts with a cup of coffee.

I give thanks for our Dog (Flash). And for Easter which starts with E, because without Easter none of us would be who we are today.

The letter F makes me thankful for Florida, such a great place to live. But also for FROGs that remind us to Fully Rely On God, and Fish (one of the earliest symbols for the Christian faith).

Moving on through the alphabet, I’m thankful for my Guitar, for Honey in my tea, for Ice cream (my favorite food), for Jesus (who makes it all possible), for my Kayak which takes me to interesting places, and for Limes (critical for my key lime pie).

The letter M reminds me of mountains so majestic and of

course the moon so mysterious.

N is for nurses, O is for oranges, and P is for pie.

I struggled with Q and asked my friends. They suggested quiet time and quality of life. Both of those go nicely with Rocking chairs.

S was an easy one. I’m immensely thankful for Steve my husband; 36 years of marriage with adventures that have certainly gone way beyond my expectations. And also Sam, our wonderful son-in-law, who makes our daughter very happy.

I’m thankful for Trees so green, for Turkey so tasty and for Telephones that help us stay in touch.

It is raining as I write this list, so I am thankful for my Umbrella.

Several times each day I give thanks for my amazing African Violet, sitting in the kitchen window and blooming non-stop for nearly 7 years.

There are lots of W’s to be thankful for – Windows that let in glorious light, long Walks through beautiful places, and of course Water and Wine.

X is for X-rays and all the other medical tests that reveal hidden problems.

Y is for Yoga and things that are the color Yellow, like the sun, the walls of my kitchen, and the yummy middle of a deviled egg.

Last but not least is the letter Z. While I do like zebras and it is good to be thankful for zebras, today I’m especially thankful for Zechariah, the father of John the Baptist. Zechariah’s faithfulness was the necessary behind-the-scenes forerunner of the one who prepared the way for Jesus the Messiah. And so in honor of Zechariah I’m thankful today for all who serve behind-the-scenes to make good things happen.

My hope for you, as you read this article, is really very simple – that you will also make your list of things for which you are giving thanks this month. Together may we magnify God with thanksgiving and be like telescopes in our words and actions to help others see God’s greatness and majesty.

Thanks be to God for you!

Rev. Pam

UTO Fall Ingathering: November 17/18“YOUR BLESSINGS BECOME BLESSINGS FOR OTHERS” LIVES ARE CHANGED IN VERY REAL WAYS! United Thank Offering (UTO) is a ministry of The Episcopal Church for the mission of the whole church. Through United Thank Offering, men, women, and children nurture the habit of giving daily thanks to God. You are never too young or too old to count your blessings and start a daily spiritual practice. These prayers of thanksgiving start when we recognize and name our many daily blessings. Give THANKS for the good things that happen every day, like sunshine for your family picnic. Give THANKS for the big things like recovery from serious illness. It’s suggested that every time you think of something you’re thankful for, you say a thankful prayer and drop money in your BLUE BOX. Checks may be made payable to Holy Trinity with a note on the check that it’s for “UTO.” See the UTO Display in the Narthex on November 10/11 or visit www.episcopalchurch.org/page/united-thank-offering for further information. If you have any questions, feel free to call Judy Henderson at 321-327-3175.

Holy Land Informational Meeting: November 4 at 10:30amHoly Land Trip Informational Meeting: November 4 at 10:30am in the Parish Hall: Fr. Steve & Rev. Pam invite you to join them on a trip to the Holy Land: June 3 - 12, 2019. A journey following the footsteps of Jesus will change the way we read the Bible. Our itinerary will include: Galilee, Cana, Nazareth, Jericho, Mount of Olives, Jerusalem, Bethlehem, and more. Pricing starts at $3,796. If interested, please attend the informational meeting. If you’re unable to go to the meeting, speak with Rev. Pam or Fr. Steve, or pick up a brochure in the Narthex or church office, or visit our website.

The Ravenwood Masquerade was a hit with over 100 in attendance. Can you believe Becky Crews' character was the one who killed Mike Crews' character? Funny how that worked out! No one knew until the very end. This was a fun event that has raised over $2,000 to support the students we serve.

Next up! The first annual LiftUp Young Lives Golf Classic will be held on Saturday, November 10 at The Majors in Palm Bay. Put your foursome together now - $80 per person or $300 for your foursome (includes water, beer and snacks on the course, fun games, raffle prizes, and a lunch ceremony). You might be the lucky winner of the hole-in-one grand prize of $2,000. Register to play at www.holytrinitymelbourne.org. Who do you know that would be interested in golfing, being a sponsor, or offering a raffle prize? If so, contact us at [email protected].

Holiday Shopping Spree: November 17 at 10am - 2pm in Lewis Hall. The holiday shopping season is fast approaching! Come by Holy Trinity in Lewis Hall to find some great items, from jewelry, food, homemade gummies and more to buy for the people on your shopping list! Each vendor will be donating 50-100% of the profits to LiftUp Young Lives. A great and fun way to support our students!

SAVE THE DATE! LiftUp graduation will be held at the 5pm service on Saturday, December 8. It would be great to have as many of our church family present as possible. A celebration will take place right after the service.

parishioners to gather together on a regular but informal basis for purely social reasons. There are no programs, no projects, and no assigned topic of conversation. Just to enjoy one another’s company, to strengthen bonds of community, to meet new members and simply get to know and love each other as part of our faith community here at Holy Trinity. Groups generally consist of 6 – 8 people who meet once a month for a meal and socializing as a small group. Each group is unique and decides the format that works best for them, which may include dinner at a restaurant, brunch after church, a picnic or a pork roast around the kitchen table. The kick-off starting our new season will be Sunday November 11 with the SUPER SUPPER. If you cannot attend the SUPER SUPPER – you may still sign up! Sign up in the Narthex or church office. This Christmas, give TWO gifts in ONE! Gifts from the Heart (GFTH) is back for a third season! Please consider helping a family in need this pre-Advent season by selecting a tag off the giving tree in the Narthex during the month of November! About GFTH: Gifts from the Heart Christmas Shop is a unique partnership between eight local non-profit organizations: Neighbor Up Brevard (parent organization of the DOCK program), Club Esteem, Love Inc., Family Promise of Brevard, Community of Hope, Brevard Rescue Mission, Eckerd

Connects, and Habitat for Humanity. Each organization serves families who live on the economic margins of our community. Through your generous support, parents and guardians of children served by these organizations are offered the opportunity to purchase and have wrapped Christmas gifts for their children at a greatly reduced cost at our Gifts from the Heart Christmas Shop. Each wrapped gift is, in essence, two gifts - a gift for the child and the gift of joy and an affirmation of dignity for the parent. Learn more at www.giftsfromtheheartshop.org. Purchase through the online registries (Target or Amazon) to have gifts shipped directly to the store or drop them off in the Narthex by November 27, 2018.

THRIFT SHOP: It has come to my attention that in the past the Thrift Shop has provided the service of packing up items for people who wish to donate and either don’t have the time or ability to do it themselves. As part of our mission to provide for those in need I fully agree that this service should and will be available to people who wish to donate their possessions to our shop. In order to provide this service we need volunteers. There will always be a team of at least 2 people – no one will be asked to enter a home alone. We will provide the boxes and paper. All you need to do is pack and Bill, our truck driver, will pick up the boxes. Since we never know when we will get a request for this service, volunteers will be contacted as the need arises. I will call you to set up a date for you to work. Typically, we’ll need your help within 3 days of my call. Please consider joining our family of ‘worker bees’ at the shop. Thank you! Kathy Walker, Thrift Shop Manager, 727-2797 / 292-0353 / [email protected].

From Your Health Ministry TeamBlue Christmas Service to Be Held December 2 Maybe you don’t look forward to Christmas because you are carrying pain. Perhaps you are grieving the loss of a loved one. Maybe you are overwhelmed by caring for a spouse with Alzheimer’s or another form of dementia. It could be that you are away from your family. Whatever the reason, the Christmas season is often a sad, lonely time for you. To help you in your struggle at this time of year, Holy Trinity began the Blue Christmas Service, which is now in its third year.Come out and join with us in sharing and hearing prayers, Scripture, and music that acknowledge that God’s presence is for those who mourn, for those who struggle--and that God’s Word comes to shine light into darkness. Everyone, regardless of their membership at Holy Trinity, is welcome. There will be Prayer Teams in the back of the church, as we do at all worship services.Blue Christmas is a gentle, contemplative service designed for those whose hearts are hurting. This year’s service will be Sunday, December 2 from 4-5 p.m. Rev. Meghan Farr will lead the service with prayers and readings that will, hopefully, ease the burden. “Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted,” (Matthew 5:4).
