Grattan Report into Education Towards the end of last year I was honoured to be a part of a Grattan Institute round table discussion on the future of education titled ‘ Australian education: Are we preparing our students for the future?’ Fourteen of Australia’s leading voices in education were invited to be a part of this discussion, and I found myself being the sole representative of Government School leadership at the table. Afterwards I chatted to the head of the discussion, the Grattan Institute School Education Program Director Peter Goss, in a more specific way about the programs we had in place here at Kalinda. I noted with interest two weeks ago that the latest Grattan research report into education, ‘Targeted teaching: How better use of data can improve student learning’, was released and reported on by all the major media outlets. The report sited research that shows there is a 5 8 year academic gap among students in any average classroom, and that schools were largely failing to meet these varied needs despite the best efforts of teachers. The report concluded that the only way to properly meet the needs of this diverse range of ability levels was to gain accurate data of where students are at in their academic journey for each particular topic and then target teach in small groups to meet the specific needs of those students. It is no coincidence that this report describes and recommends the methods we already use here at Kalinda. Finding out where each student is at in their learning journey in each particular topic, and then planning lessons specifically to meet them at their point of need is the cornerstone of what we do.

From the Acting Principal………

Trip to JIRS off and running! On Monday morning at our assembly, students and teachers heading to India to visit our sister school were presented with their special India tour hats! They flew out of Melbourne airport just after midnight on Tuesday and arrived safe and well in India Wednesday night our time. They were greeted by a big welcome from staff and students at the Jain International Residential School. Grattan Report into Education Towards the end of last year I was honoured to be a part of a Grattan Institute round table discussion on the future of education titled ‘Australian education: Are we preparing our students for the future?’ Fourteen of Australia’s leading voices in education were invited to be a part of this discussion, and I found myself being the sole representative of Government School leadership at the table. You will have noticed in our portfolios, both digital and paper based, the placement of your child’s understandings on the Australian Curriculum continuum is highlighted, so you are informed of where your child’s learning has progressed to for each topic. We also continue to roll out our online resources we use in class for each topic area on our grade level homepages so you can follow up your child’s learning at home if you wish. I would encourage you to Google the Grattan Report and have a look, even if you only read the summary. And also to take some pride in the knowledge that Kalinda is at the forefront of targeted teaching based on data and is working to take a leading role in ensuring more and more schools begin to do the same. RICHARD LAMBERT ACTING PRINCIPAL

CANTEEN REQUEST Don’t get us wrong, we love our children visiting the Canteen for treats every Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Everything we sell at Canteen is tasty and as healthy as we can possibly manage it, and it’s great for a tasty treat every now and then. Recently, however, some children are spending lots and lots of money on icy poles and ice creams; sometimes five or six at a time! We understand that they love their ice creams but think that maybe that many at once is a little too much. We are asking if parents could please limit the amount of money your children are bringing to school for Canteen purchases to just a couple of dollars each and to put the money somewhere very safe in their bag so it won’t get lost. Some children have been known to hand over $5 and $10 notes and this is a bit too much for young children to be carrying to school. Your cooperation in this matter would be greatly appreciated. PIE DAY Don’t forget to put in your Footy Pie Day form and money. The last day we can accept orders is Monday 31

st August. Please check your child’s bag / satchel to make sure they

have handed it in. We are still looking for more helpers in the 11am – 1.30pm time slot. It takes time to deliver all the orders to the classrooms so they can be eaten before the bell rings. If you can come in, your assistance would be greatly appreciated. Don’t forget that you must have a current Working With Children’s Check. We now have Cheese and Butter Popcorn back in stock. Thank you for your patience while we were out of stock. JO O’CALLAGHAN CANTEEN MANAGER

All parents and friends are most welcome to join us at the assembly at 9:10 a.m. in our stadium and also 2:00 P.m. for professional energetic Japanese drum and shamisen performance, followed by our students singing and dancing performance.

This is a whole school event. This year, the whole school is NOT divided into Aka (red) and Shiro (white) teams. Instead, we encourage you to dress up as one of Japanese anime characters, one of Japanese food or anything you could relate to Japan! At the opening assembly in the morning, we will have the costume parade, everyone will have turn to show off your costume!! There will be prizes for each level. So please start thinking about your costume!! You might create something using a garbage bag, cardboard and face painting?? Parents and friends are most welcome to join our assembly.

We hope you enjoy co-ordinating the clothes and be ready for the fun day!!
