3GPP MCData Overview
Date: 12 Jan, 2018
Basavaraj Pattan (Samsung)[email protected]
Introduction of MCData
MCData TS 23.282 Stage-2 specification defines a suite of data services (i.e., short data service, file distribution, conversation management, enhanced status) required to support MC services over LTE
◊ based on requirements in TS 22.282 and TS 22.280
◊ specifies stage 2 functional architecture and information flows/procedures
Utilizes the common functionality defined in 3GPP TS 23.280 for:
Stage-3 protocol aspects for stage-2 defined functionality is in MCData TS 24.282 (control plane) and TS 24.582 (media plane)
Operation modes for MCData
◊ On-network
◊ Off-network

Examples of SDS data (text, binary, application data, URL or combinations of these) are:
location information
command instructions to invoke apps
delivery and read reports
user to user
applications data to app/user
enhanced status
• Standalone (one unidirectional transaction) and
Session (bi-directional transactions) SDS
• Standalone SDS over signalling plane (small data) and
media plane (large data)
• Delivery and read report is optional to request
• Read report can sent in a separate transaction (e.g.,
when media plane is used for data delivery)

Specific Services

Conversation Management
• Collection of related MCData transmissions (SDS, FD)
• Unique Conversation Identifier is used to bind related MCData transmissions
• On-network and Off-network
• Admin preset values for enhanced status per group basis
• Status delivered via group standalone SDS using signalling control plane procedures
• Procedure specified for both on-network and off-network

Control indication

4b
• Automatic transmission for SDS
• No or basic checks before sending data
• Control indications – no permission, no affiliated
members
• Send data with mandatory download
• Applicable to FD
• Control indications – no permission, no affiliated
members, exceeding transmit time/size, request
queued
• Send data without mandatory download
• Applicable to FD using HTTP
• Control indications to sender – no permission, no
affiliated members, exceeding data transmit
time/size, request queued
• Control indications to receiver – periodic
announcement of stored data availability, expired
data
• Accessing list of deferred data group communications
On-demand fetching of list of stored data availability
Based on the configurations, advocates reception mode and
terminate transmission when there is no longer a need to transmit
Communication Release (on-network)
9© TSDSI 2018
• User initiated
• Applicable to data transfer over media plane and HTTP
• If file removed from storage, recipients control indication – data not available
• Server initiated without prior indication
• Forced release for ongoing data communication over media plane, HTTP
• Applicable to both one-to-one and group SDS and FD
• Server initiated with prior indication
• Sender has option to extend communication release
• Authorized user initiated with or without prior indication
• Similar to server initiated procedures
