  • cubehouse This first year project showcase my first experience with architectural design. The project restricted an volume of 5X5X5m cube. In order to work around with the ordinary cube and need to maintain the proper volume at the same time, a strategy of deriving the design mass by dividing the cube into smaller volumes is used. The basic concept is subtracting and adding the volumes while maintaining the overall cubic shape.

The design aims to create a soothing urban area. By minimizing openings associated with the busy downtown streetscape, the meditation space is filtered out from its surroudings.

The meditation rooms and the hallway are confined within 3 curved planes. The design is a contradicting response to the surrounded boxy buildings. It gives the pavilion its own identity and differentiate its unique purpose from its surroundings.ii

  • communitycentreThe trinity bellowoods park community centre situated beside an existing ice rink. The design took the analysis of nearby community into a great consideration. It aims to provide support for the ice rink as well as a destination for weekend activities.

The community centre consists of a multi-purpose room, cafeteria, change rooms and a lounge. The multi-purpose room is designed with folding door all around that aims to accomodate a farmers market and merge together indoor and outdoor activities.iii

  • henrymooregalleryThe gallery is designed to accomodate the existing henry moore sculptures within AGO. This new gallery is located at the proposed East Bay front revitalization plan. This gallery housed various functions other than just a gallery. The basic concept is to echo the principle of henry moore sculptures: experiences differ from different approaches.

With a large portion of the facade facing west and into the huge open area, the building suffers from the bright sun at sunset as well as wind coming directly from the Lake Ontario. A double skin facade system is employed in order to minimize the negative effect.

  • sewerhealthclubThis 4th year charrette focused on the concept of transprogramming. Sewer system is selected as the primary component. These systems are often being neglected in spite of its elegance. Inside Toronto, the Gargantua sewer system extended from bayview/yorkmills all the way across 401 up north revealed the potential of this majestic underground world. Along the 5.5+km, several grilles allow natural sunlight descended into its interior which created a phenomenal experience of space.

The health club component is often an escape from the fast pace city lives. The almost isolated sewer system provide an ideal location for the escape. While the programming of health club is often clustered, the sewer system forced it into a linear arrangement.

  • cultural exchange4th year thesis project focused on the main them of architecture in conflict. Following the raise of globalization, coexistence play a major role to deal with conflicts. Each entity plays a major role, and at the same time, conflicting with the others.

This manifesto is a response to the direction towards the state of coexistence. Amos Oz once said if we dont learn how to unhappily coexist...we end up in a doomed state. To begin this learning, my thesis aim to create a common ground for sharing and experiencing the cultures of each other. A significant example of dealing with coexistence lie within the long lasting conflict between the Israelis and palestinians. The conflict between them is chosen for this project to demonstrate the potential of a cultural exchange.

The site selection method is based upon the demographics for both entities, i.e. isrealis and palestinians. With Nazareth-illit, a isrealis settlement, lie in the neighbourhood, the metropolitan of Nazareth presents a almost equal population of both entities. It is chosen also because of its remote location away from the centre of the conflict in Jerusalem. It makes the learning possible.

The highway represents a connection into the cities as well as a physical boundary to seperate both. It is an ideal location for a destination as well as a symbolic icon as breaching this boundary. The final site selected also work as a gateway to enter and exit the cities.

Using a boundary-desitination approach, the parti diagram took shape based on the concept of breaching the boundary. The massing is produced based on the integration of weaving into the main concept as a vehicle to make the breach happen.

The weaves each start off at 2 ends with a small exhibit area for a passive learning experience. When visitors proceed through the weaves, their experience will become enrich by studio and practice rooms on the sides which they can choose to actively engage with the activities within. When the weaves reach into the heart of the complex, the spaces are opened into the event plaza where festivals and events will be held.

The complex ramp system in each weaves aims to direct visitors visions into another weaves through openings. It is the first response to the concept of breaching the boundry.

The event plaza is a constructed as a giant steel frame structure with double steel frame on the sides and girders run across the space. It provides a colum free multi-purpose space to accomodate different types of events. At the two ends of the event plaza lies the outdoor auditorium and the theatre.

The even plaza serves as the final destination but not the final purpose. When visitors depart from the complex, they bring their experience back to their own lives. From the experience, it further breaches the boundary between entities within the communities. And this is the direction of coexistence.

As a response the the social and cultural context, the complex presents an high level of complexity and congestion similar to the New York city. The congestion happens mainly along the central spline to improve efficiency.

Another congestion happen with the projection of inner streets onto the site, allowing public traffic to reach the public destination at the river edge.

The form of the building complex is generated by arrangement of programs. These arrangements are based on the program analysis of the existing UN, a grid set up on site as well as proximity of programs.

The concept of layering help to organize wuch a chaotic design. The principle explores the dynamic relationship between more flexible relation-ship between architecture and program.

Void is used in the design as program as well as picture frames of the city. The void between buildings generate courtyards, these courtyards are designed for resting, seating, lunch, gathering, circulation, chatting, etc.

2 types of connections are located between inner city and the river edge: extension of streets and visual experience. Buildings are projected onto or even across the extended streets. It creates a frame that direct pedestri-ans attention and connect the river edge public functions with the inner city visually.

  • canopyseawaveOur concept for this canopy came from the structure of a wave, while a wave has its ups and down so does the user flow of the distillery district. Since the community here is vibrant, weve chosen materials and members that would project them even further.

While this steel canopy might look simple, there are actually several forces at work to keep it stable. There are tension members along the cable; these tension members are there to transfer the snow load and the canopys self weight to the steel bracket and eventually to the wall. Each panel of glass is supported by 2 cables and both of them would take equal amount of force. However majority of the weight is supported along the spandrel beam behind the canopy where the weight is then transferred to the side connection.

  • apartmentThe purpose of this project is to develop a viable design solution for a four storey, mixed use building that is to be located in the city of Toronto. The design needs to comply with the Ontario Building Code, while meeting the program requirement issued by the client.

This year long project is divided into 2 parts. The first part focused on designing according to the building code including fire separation, sound transmission class, unprotected openings, exit and mean of egress, etc. The second part focused on the developing detailed construction drawings.

Digital works provide me an important experience to expand my knowledge into a new way of design and the potential of how digital works can be incorporated in design.

  • modplexIn the age of sustainability, modularity provide an efficient solution to address complicated design. The efficiency, however, easily eliminate the aesthetic level of complexity. Which produces lots of replica that are dull and loss its uniqueness.

Design with lighting consists of lots of variations and uncertainties. It adds complexity to both the design work and end products. The goal of the light design is to achieve complex lighting quality by utilizing modular design elements.

5The actual product is manufactured using a precisely laser cut technology with a simple CAD file. It produced close to flawless cutting of a complex design like this. This technology allow precise rapid prototyping, which is a great tool to help generate physical model to study the design.

By using modularity and laser cut, it turns a complex design into a simple one thats easy to understand and interpret.

The actual lighting pattern is much more distorted compared to the rendering

  • wall ascanvasInspired by Stehpan Knapp, the basic concept of this project is based on his light painting exhibition. While his light painting remain a static exhibition, our interpretation aim to bring dynamic component into create this light painting.

Stephan Knapp once said Perception and interaction lead to an act of mutual discovery, a universal bond of our existence. There is no right answer hidden within each piece, only a shared journey. You interact with w paint and paint to interact. Its our perception and interaction of the concept.

The design is composed of 2 major component, a canvas and a brush, i.e. a projection screen and a touch screen. The triangular configuration of the screen allow flexibility to deform into a custom shape.

Its an active painting process, a passive sculpting process and an experiential architectural process. It gives you a justification of vendalism without any legal charge. It gives you the urge to explore its constructability. It gives you an interactive experience of architecture with the synchronization of your hands and eyes. Its the wall of pure discovery. Enjoy.
