Thomas Dwyer Bass AM, one of Australia’s foremost sculptors, a founding member of the Sculptors Society and perhaps one of the most recognised names in art died on Friday, 26 February aged 94.

From the

President

Congratulations to all our members in the Mosman Festival of Sculpture. It is an impressive exhibition with over 90 sculptures. This year the show has stretched to include Spit Junction as well as Mosman Village.

We are now calling for entries for our fi rst city exhibition for the year in Chifl ey Tower and Governors Phillip & Macquarie Towers, 3 - 21 May with entries closing 2nd April. If you have not yet seen our revamped website, take a look now (www.sculptorssociety.com). It has a clean modern look and improved navigation. We will continue to update the information on the website, so if you have information you think should be included, please let us know.

Finally, if you have not yet paid your membership please do so now (renewal forms can be downloaded from the website) Unless you are paid up you will not be able to exhibit with us and will no longer receive the Bulletin. Jenny Green

Tom Bass was born in 1916 in Lithgow, NSW and into poverty. After many odd jobs during the depression, he studied at the Datillo-Rubbo Art School (1937 - 40). His art studies were interrupted due to army service after which he took up studies at the National Art School in Sydney where he was taught by Lydon Dadswell. Bass graduated in 1948 and began his career as a sculptor. He taught at the National Art School from 1950 - 1953, before founding his own sculpture school in 1974, which he established initially in Broadway later relocating it to Erskinville in 1998.

In 1989, Tom Bass was admitted to the Order of Australia for his contribution to sculpture; and in 2006, a retrospective of his work was held at the Sydney Opera House to mark the year of his 90th birthday.

His works can be found all over Australia; some of these include: Ethos in Canberra’s Civic Square; The Falconer, at University of New South Wales; The Student, Main Gates, University of Sydney; Trial of Socrates at Wilson Hall, University of Melbourne, and Saint Francis Xavier, Roman Catholic Church, Ashbury, NSW.

It is also with great sadness I report that Robert Woodward AM, another great name in Australian public art passed away on Sunday 21 February.

Robert Woodward trained in architecture at Sydney University then spent time in Finland working for the famous ‘organic’ modernist architect, Alvar Aalto during the 1950’s. He was a man of many talents having also represented Australia as a hurdler in the Commonwealth Games in 1950.

Woodward is responsible for many public fountains seen in landmark civic sites and buildings all over Australia. When I think of Robert Woodward, I think of three major works he was responsible for the design of, namely the waterfall at the High Court of Australia in Canberra which impressively runs the full length of the entry ramp; the Convention Centre Water feature at Darling Harbour and the El Alemein Fountain in Kings Cross, Sydney which won him the NSW Institute of Architects Civic Desgn Award in 1964. The El Alamein fountain’s iconic dandelion shape has made it a well known landmark. The fountain was commissioned as a memorial to soldiers who died in 1942 during WWII in the battles at El Alamein, Egypt.

2nd prize was awarded to Karl van Middeldyk’’s ‘Unlocking the Links’. This is a beautifully balanced and resolved work which challenges our perceptions of scale and possibility. Constructed from sandstone with refi ned interlocking links, it appears fl uid almost weightless. It is a symbolically rich work which engages the viewer on multiple levels.

3rd prize was awarded to Sally Zylberberg for her elegant work titled, ‘Between Heaven and Earth’. Sally uses a rich patterning of mosaics to construct a fl owing, almost amorphous, shape of a cloud. Small mirrored pieces have been inserted to refl ect the silver lining, further enhancing the work and bringing it to life. The result is an exquisite work which suspends effortlessly in space.

The three Highly Commended works are ‘Soul Mates’ by Margaret Sheridan, ‘Sundance’ by John Brooke and ‘Under the Weather’ by Philip Jones. The three Commended works are ‘Desert Rose’ by Jenny Green, ‘The Song’ by Larissa Smagarinksy and ‘The Wheels of Time’ by Libby Bloxham.

Mould Making & Casting

Firstly, I am honoured to be part of this year’s Mosman Festival of Sculpture. I applaud the exhibiting sculptors for your commitment and contribution to this major cultural event. I would also like to acknowledge The Sculptors Society, Mosman Village Business Association and the Festival Sponsors for supporting contemporary sculpture and further developing and enriching the visual arts.

It was certainly an exhilarating experience working my way through Mosman Village precinct and discovering one hidden treasure after another. It was impressive to see the range of sculptors working with such great skill and innovation across diverse media including bronze, steel, stone, marble, wood, polyurethane, acrylic, glass, ceramic, mosaic, found and recycled objects.

The standard was very high making the task of selecting three prize winners a challenge. It required several site visits and lengthy deliberation. I also deemed it necessary to commend an additional six works due to the overall level of excellence.

1st prize was awarded to Blaze Krstanoski Blazeski for his powerful and dynamic sculpture titled, ‘Knowledge’. Consisting of a series of seamless circular forms it takes the viewer on a visual journey both inwards and outwards simultaneously. It appears to have no beginning and no end and, like knowledge itself, is infi nite. It clearly demonstrates Blaze’s level of skill and refi nement in working with bronze.

Angela Morrell’s Mosman Review

Helen Leete Whirlpool Bronze 10x30x30 cm

An engulfi ng whirlpool is habitually used as reference in ancient myths. The mediaeval Italian poet, Dante, uses the whirlpool as having infl uence in the death of great fi gures.

The two female fi gures in Leete’s ‘Whirlpool’ fl ow together totally integrated in sensuality. Long wavy hair and perfect bodies move in a rhythm that emphasizes their beauty and perfection of form They are locked in a circular movement where heads and feet join. In the centre there is negative space that represents the whirlpool in which they will be taken by a centrifugal force and carried into the next life.

Ernest Salerno Beach BabyBronze 40x20x15 cm

With simplistic charm, Salerno has presented us with ‘Beach Baby’ It is a fi gurative representation of a young woman wearing a bathing costume with a loose top and skirt that she naughtily fl ips to draw attention to her legs. She provocatively points one of her delicate toes. Although her head is covered in a coolie style hat the woman still appears fl irtatious.

Her costume and hat are colored with a green patina and her fl esh gives the feeling of being naturally bronzed by the sun.

Feisal Ramadan Metamorphisis Recycled timber 100x60x90 cm

The title ‘Metamorphosis’ is aptly chosen for Ramadan’s work indicating that somewhere a total transformation has taken place. A variety of wooden moulds previously used to make functional ceramic items have been cleverly assembled together to create an interesting abstract sculpture.

The surface of the moulds have been partly sanded back to expose the inclusion of multiple joins within the raw wood. Patches of pale blue and grey paint remain adding further visual interest. From each angle that we view the assemblage, its form changes reminding us of the excitement inherent in the exploration of ancient architectural remains.

Angela Morrell’s Mosman Review

John Seed Megellanic CloudsPainted steel 55x52x40 cm

Seed’s painted steel sculpture is composed of a variety of fi ne shapes that have a mechanical appearance. They are welded together repeating the same overlapping shape in circles so they appear to rotate giving the illusion of movement and speed reminiscent of Op art of the 1960’s.

Attention can be drawn to any angle and images change with shifting vision. The title ‘Megellanic Clouds’ leads us to believe that this work is symbolically a maker of light.

There is a fi nesse within the work which has an appeal often found in jewellery

Robert Hawkins Tidelines (Caves Beach)Timber 30x60x5 cm

Caves beach has a degree of wave protection created by the reefs that are nearby. It is here that Hawkins has found objects that have been formed and weathered by nature. He has utilized three long objects that create harmony by placing them parallel and one on top of the other. The top section looks interestingly like a battered boat propeller. The bottom section functions as a base and after refi ning all the three strong forms they are held apart by irregular fi ne rods, The result is a strong sculpture that could be read as a metaphor for what can be found on the ‘Tideline’.

Larissa Smagarinsky was selected to create a bronze sculpture in Changchun in northern China

Roger McFarlane was chosen to sculpt Flight Form after he submitted his entry to the Steinbildhauer Symposium in Vattis, Switzerland held last year from 19 July to 8 August. His sculpture in Swiss Marble (pictured opposite page LHS) is 100cm long and mounted on a large stone. Vattis is a small town of approximatley 400 people in the Tamina Valley in Eastern Switzerland.

Artists were required to submit their proposals and CV’s, and twelve artists were ultimately selected by a committee and by members of the local community. The sculptures are situated beside a meadow along a walking path that leads up into the mountains.

More recently, Roger was invited to the city of Hanghzou in China to attend the opening ceremony of an exhibition of Chinese and foreign sculptors. Roger was asked to speak at the ceremony, to have one of his sculptures in the exhibition and to sit in on a round table discussion on policy and issues concerning public art in China. Those around the table included well known sculptors from China; departmental heads from

Roger McFarlane was selected to sculpt a work in Vat t is , Switzerland

Our last issue of the Bulletin included an article which mentioned Larissa having just returned from China where she was selected from a huge number of entries from all over the world to sculpt a large bronze as part of the 10th China Changchun (Shuangyang) International Sculpture Symposium. The Symposium was held in Changchun from July to September last year to promote China’s international cultural exchange and to increase urban sculpture in the region.

The theme of the Symposium was ‘Nature and Love’ and each applicant was requested to deliver at least 3 proposals.

At our next Sculptors Society forum on 18th March, Larissa will talk about her work for this Symposium in China.

Member’s News Continued

Terrance Plowright’s commission for the SCG - the bronze sculpture of Stan McCabe, the famous batsman of the Bradman Bodyline Era (the period between 1932 - 33 when a new fast bodyline bowling tactic was introduced and used by the English team targeting our batsmen). The larger than life size bronze is positioned at the entrance of the Members Stand. This work took Plowright around 9 months to complete and is the second cricketing sculpture he has undertaken for the SCG Trust; Terrance was also responsible for the sculpture in the Basil Sellers Sculpture Series, that sculpture being of Richie Benaud.Plowright said, “One of the highlights with this particular project was the inclusion of Steve Waugh as technical advisor. Steve kindly offered his time to inspect the model and spent 2 hours in the studio.” Plowright has also been commissioned to start work on the last of the SCG series, which he began working on in February this year. This work is to be unveiled at the Sydney Ashes Test in 2011.

Terrance is also working on a 4 metre stainless steel contemporary work for Waverley Council and two 8 metres high kinetic sculptures for Lend Lease, in conjunction with the ACT government.

Terrance Plowright’s bronze sculpture of Stan McCabe was unveiled recently at the SCG

the sculpture faculty of Hangzhou University; a sculptor from Taiwan and a sculptor from Italy; the Mayor from the city of Hangzhou and regional government representatives from Beijing. Roger’s sculpture, Muse (pictured opposite page) selected for the exhibition is now on tour along with the other sculptures around China.

Roger will join Larissa at our next forum and talk about these recent experiences overseas (see Exhibitions page 2 for more details).

Beginner to AdvancedThe lessons are designed to teach basic sculpting techniques using modeling clay.

Students are shown how to construct a very basic armature over which the sculpture will be formed, and how to use prof iling in order to maintain control of the sculpture from all angles.

Working from photographs, ar tist’s models or from other sculpted figurative forms, individual students can work at their own pace on their own project. As students develop more conf idence and have mastered some basic skills, they are encouraged to explore their own ideas and projects, or to progress to more demanding set poses.
