Description and FunctionSlurryPro CDP is a water-soluble vinyl polymer in an innovative easy-mixing dry granular form. SlurryPro CDP is designed for preparation of viscous earth-stabilizing fl uids or slurries for a variety of excava-tion techniques including drilling, trench ing and walling ap pli ca tions in the geocon struc tion industry.

ApplicationSlurryPro CDP polymer is rec om -mend ed for the fol low ing con struc -tion ap pli ca tions:

SlurryPro CDP polymer re plac es bentonite at ratios ranging between 1-to-50 and 1-to-200 in typical ap pli ca tions. This means that 20 pounds (10 kg) of SlurryPro CDP can replace one-half to two tons (500 to 2000 kilos) of ben to nite.

SlurryPro CDP mixes readily with water and requires no special mix-ing equip ment. Small quan ti ties of SlurryPro CDP can rapidly create a viscous soil-sta bi liz ing slurry.

SlurryPro CDP sta bi liz es loose sands, clays, and water-sen si tive for ma tions. SlurryPro CDP fl uids co he sive ly bind ex ca vat ed soil solids together, fa cil i tat ing their removal from the excavation and pre vent ing them from dispers-ing into the slurry. SlurryPro CDP max i miz es spoil loading on augers and in grabs, in creas ing ex ca va tion rates. SlurryPro CDP makes it

possible to slurry-drill with au gers, even in sand and gravel, often elim- i nat ing the need to use a bucket. This feature can reduce drilling time, increase pro duc tiv i ty and reduce slurry wastage.

SlurryPro CDP slurries are non-gelling, even at high vis cos i ties. This prop er ty fa cil i tates settling of fi nes and main te nance of a clean fl uid. Sand settles readi ly to the bottom of the excavation and can be easily re moved. Me chan i cal de sand ing is not re quired. Unlike ben to nite slur ries, which tend to sus pend sand and require

Performance,continued:mechan i cal de sand ing, SlurryPro CDP slurries are self-clean ing by grav i ty sed i men ta tion. The addi-tion of dilute SlurryPro MPA™ or ImPac™ to a SlurryPro CDP sys-tem en hanc es the ag glom er a tion, or gluing together, of dispersed par-ticles for accelerated sed i men ta tion. This facilitates cleaning of the fl uid and of the ex ca va tion toe.

SlurryPro CDP, and most of the Vinyl System's additives, can be mixed directly in the borehole or ex- ca va tion when desired. This can be helpful in suc cess ful ly excavating through problematic granular soils such as loose sand, gravel, cobbles and other unstable formations. SlurryPro CDP is highly effi cient, requiring small quan ti ties of product to prepare large volumes of slurry.Operating ef fi cien cy of SlurryPro CDP can exceed by a factor of fi ve the per for mance of com pet i tive liquid poly mers.

In addition to providing su pe ri or vis cos i ty de vel op ment, SlurryPro CDP polymer’s membrane develop-ment and adhesion characteristic improve loading and removal of spoil, sta bi liz e ex ca va tion walls and

improve skin friction in bored piles. Di a phragm wall panels are smooth- er and re quire less fi n ish ing work.

Because SlurryPro CDP is highly con cen trat ed, its higher level of per for mance provides greater economy and sim pli fi ed storage and handling.

SlurryPro CDP also provides ex cel lent control of fl uid loss to per- me able sands and granular forma-tions by plug ging and sealing pore spaces and voids with a Gel Mem- brane™ seal formed by the polymer within the walls of the ex ca va tion. This is a unique and valuable fea-ture of SlurryPro CDP, which can dra mat i cal ly reduce slurry con- sump tion and op er at ing/production costs while im prov ing soil stability. Gravel and cobbles can be han dled by adding KobbleBlok™ to the SlurryPro CDP system.

Formations as challenging as clean cobbles in the Pacifi c Northwest of the United States to highly chan-nelled corals in Miami Florida are able to be successfully excavated through with true fl uid loss con-trol as seen at the top of the next column.

SlurryPro CDP lubricates ex ca -vat ing tools, reducing friction and wear. This allows increased opera-tions time even with hydro-cutter.

When all of the SlurryPro System's advantages are taken into con sid -er ation and their economic impact is un der stood, it becomes clear that SlurryPro CDP is the technol-ogy that will replace both mineral and con ven tion al polymer slurries because neither slurry technol-ogy cannot remain com pet i tive. Nu mer ous foundation con trac tors, including some of the largest and most respected companies in the in ter na tion al in dus try, have adopted this new technology after trying it on critical, high-profi le jobs where effi cient per for mance was required to meet schedules and make a profi t. In some cases, the CDP Vinyl System has been tried only after re-peated load test failures in problem soils with bentonite or conventional polymer systems, and in every case the CDP Vinyl System has shown much better results. Removing un cer tain ty on excavation stability, concrete overbreaks, load tests and keeping projects on schedule trans- lates into large mon e tary savings and reduced liability.

SlurryPro's Impact on Concrete In ter fac es.One of the most visual benefi ts of the SlurryPro CDP Vinyl System is its dramatic improvement in con- crete interfaces and reduced con-crete overbreak rates. The reduc-tion in concrete overbreak rates is due in part to the clean, uncontami-nated con crete interface eliminating the need to over pour ex ca va tions with several cubics of concrete to insure the absence of bentonite con tam i na tion. The im prove ment is also due in part to improved exca-vation stability which yields more gauge excavations. These factors combine to yield signifi cant re duc -tions in concrete con sump tion and thereby concrete ex pen di tures.

The following pho to graphs clearly il lus trate the improvement in con-crete interfaces when utilizing the CDP Vinyl Sys tem.

More importantly then the reduction in concrete consumption, or cost, is the very signifi cant reduction in prep a ra tion costs for the connec-tion of the foundation system to the su per struc ture. The reduction in chipping or surface prep a ra tion of the foun da tion element may yield projects savings that more than compensate for the cost of the entire slurry system.

and cyclonic desanders are not required. Mixing apparatus is also simpler than for ben to nite, be-cause of the ease with which CDP polymer can be mixed into fl owing water

Impact on Equip ment Continued:without forming lumps. A slop-ing pan over which a water fl ow is directed into a standard tank takes the place of a bentonite mixer. Typi-cal re cir cu lat ing bentonite mixers, which can prepare one or two cubic meters or yards of slurry at a time, can require many hours to prepare signifi cant volumes of slurry, which must be aged to achieve full hydra-tion. By contrast, a simple 6 cubic meter agitated tank can be used to prepare 20 to 60 cubic meters or yards of SlurryPro CDP slurry in a matter of minutes, and the slurry can be used im me di ate ly.

One or two sed i men ta tion tanks or pits take the place of mechanical desanding plants. Holding the fl uid recaptured from a hole or panel for a short period of time in sed i -men ta tion tanks allows the CDP fl uid, which is non-gelling, to be cleaned by gravity. Any sand and silt which did not settle in the ex ca -va tion will instantaneously settle in the sed i men ta tion tanks and can be cleaned out intermittently.

The photographs of a bentonite plant operating a hydrocutter, or hydrocutter in water dispersible for-mations com pared with a SlurryPro CDP System plan operating under the same pa ram e ters at fl ow rates of up to 1500 gal/min. clearly demonstrate numerous advantages associated with the SlurryPro CDP System.

The SlurryPro CDP Vinyl System has been utilized continuously for the past six years on the Boston Central Artery Project on both hydrocutter, hydraulic grab, and conventional mechanical grab walls.

Competitive Bentonite System

It has been utilized on major sec-tions of the Artery Project rang-ing from the far northern Leverett Circle / North Station area to the Callahan Tunnel . State Street area to the Southern Fort Point Chan-nel site. The System has also been utilized on signifi cant expansions of Boston's Mass Transit System or MBTA System including the con-struction of the new Super Station facility next to North Station.

The SlurryPro CDP System has also been utilized to construct sig-nifi cant portions of the Taipei MRT, Singapore MRT, and Bangkok MRT. Additionally, many of the worlds largest structures rest on walls constructed with KB's CDP Vinyl System. Many of these walls have been quite deep and in adverse conditions. The photograph below is of a deep wall constructed in Keoshung Taiwan in sands, cobble and sea water conditions. Note that this is the bottom section of the cage, or half the total depth of the excavation.

The Im por tanceof Dosage onEx ca va tion Sta bil i tySlurryPro CDP polymer is mixed with water at dosage rates rang-ing from 0.3 to 1.5 kilo per cubic meter (2.5 to 8.3 pounds per 1000 gallons, or 0.5 to 1.7 pounds per cubic yard) for most ap pli ca tions. Higher dosage rates are used to stabilize loose or coarse granular soils or to excavate in sea water en vi ron ments.

Data from fi eld tests and lab o ra to ry research show that higher CDP doses and viscosities yield higher perimeter load shear or skin friction values than do lower doses and viscosities. In general, Marsh Fun-nel Viscosities of 55 or greater are desirable for best soil sta bi li za tion and highest pe rim e ter load shear. Lower viscosities (30 to about 45), while functionally effective in some soils, generally provide lower levels of overall performance and operat-ing economy.

The CDP Slurry System adds cohesion, or a chemical grout-ing effect, to low cohesion porous soils. This chemical grouting effect dra mat i cal ly improves the forma-tions strength and stability. This allows the CDP Vinyl System to be utilized in soil conditions previously thought too challenging for slurry technology and requiring temporary casing. An extreme example of the chemical grouting effect of KB's CDP System is presented below where a sugar sand formation exca-vated with conventional polymer has collapsed. The surface casing was extracted, the pile backfi lled

with the excavated spoils and then redrilled the same day with KB's CDP System and an auger.

The Im por tance of Dosage on SkinFrictionThe superior perimeter load sheer and excavation sta bi li za tion qualities of the SlurryPro CDP Vinyl System were clearly documented in a three year study conducted by Dr. Mike O'Neill and Dr. Edmundo Majano at the University of Houston.

How SlurryPro CDP's Vinyl Gel Membrane Tech nol o gy WorksIn permeable soils, especially sand and gravel, SlurryPro CDP penetrates the soil sur round ing the excavation with a high-viscosity gel fl uid, which becomes im mo bi lized in the pore system of the soil due to the unique chemical and physi-cal properties of the fl uid. Millions of small "microgels" and an orga-nized microfi lament system lodge in and span across soil pores. This microgel-and-mi crofi l a ment-re in -forced fl uid acts to seal the walls of the excavation without de pos it ing a conventional fi lter cake on the soil face, as is the case with mineral slurries (e.g. bentonite). Due to the elec tro chem i cal activity of the poly-mer fl uid, it acts as a soft grouting additive within co he sion less soils, ef fec tive ly "gluing" the grains of soil together during the ex ca vat ing process. Thereby, allow even cohe-sionless soils to be stabilized and excavated under the CDP System.

This relatively thin zone of gel-per me at ed, cohesion-enhanced soil sur round ing the ex ca va tion is the Gel Mem brane™, or pressure transfer vehicle. Due to this mem-brane's high fl uid loss control char-acteristics coupled with its grouting

effects allows the CDP membrane to achieve signifi cant levels of positive hy dro stat ic pressure exerted from the slurry column to the walls of the ex- ca va tion, insuring support of the surrounding formation. In mineral slurries this function is served by the clay fi lter cake which is de pos it ed on the face of the ex ca va tion. But the clay fi lter cake can reduce skin friction by inter-fering with concrete/soil bonding, and has none of the adhesive prop er ties of the SlurryPro CDP Gel Mem brane. With other types of polymer slurries, sta bi li za tion of granular soils is rel a tive ly poor because the polymers have no mech a nism of controlling fl uid loss (the un con trolled per me ation of the polymer fl uid into the soil). A SlurryPro CDP System combines all the ben-efi ts of each competitive system while eliminating their negative impacts.

Double Concrete's Bond ing Capacityto Rebar vs. Bentonite!

The rebar bonding performance of the SlurryPro CDP System offers great advan-tages over conventional ben to nite. In independent testing overseen by Caltrans and the FHWA, KB's CDP System has shown virtually double the per for mance results as bentonite and essentially the same bonding capacity as water soaked rebar.

Strengths!After extensive independent testing under the di rec tion of Caltrans and the FHWA analyzing the impact of SlurryPro CDP System's on the compressive strength vs bentonite and water it is clear that there is no detrimental effects. In fact, the con crete mixed with SlurryPro CDP has a higher integrity then that mixed with water.

A Comparison of the ThreeMajor Slurry Tech nol o giesThe importance of fl uid loss control and the main-tenance of positive dif fer en tial pressure against the formation sidewall can not be stressed enough. Apart from the lack of fl uid loss control causing ex ca va tion enlargement or collapse as illustrated on page 6, increased fl uid loss results in signifi cantly increased consumption of slurry materials. Therefore, it is impor-tant to aware of a number of factors prior to choosing a slurry technology solely on its cost per pound or kilo.

reg u la tions must be adhered to with regard to handling and dis pos al. In many cases the spent slurry can be dis posed of on-site or into nearby drains or wa ter cours es with an ap- pro pri ate permit.KB and contractors utilizing SlurryPro polymer systems have obtained disposal permits and have disposed of residual CDP-based slurries in a number of locales. These include areas with stringent environmental controls in the U.S.A. such as: Puget Sound (WA); tributaries of the Columbia River (WA, OR); the Salt River (AZ); Boston Harbor (MA); Ohio River (KY, IN); Red River (OK, TX); and several California cities including Long Beach and San Diego. KB has also obtained clearance from the Singapore De part ment of the En vi ron ment for direct dis charge to sewers and bodies of water throughout the Republic of Singa-pore.

The photographs below show a large pier being constructed in Richards Bay South Africa. The specifi cations for bentonite required that all excavated spoils be cap-tured and hauled to a certifi ed land-fi ll. KB and the contractor petitioned the South African En vi ron men tal Authorities for approval for the use of the SlurryPro CDP System to ease environmental impact poten-tial. In fact, we were successful in

Some soils contain layers of gyp-sum or marl (calcium-bearing de- pos its which are white, pink or gray in color). All of these soil or ground water conditions can neg a tive ly affect the performance of conven-tional slurries. KB Internationals' SlurryPro CDP Vinyl System is unaffected by seawater. If large quantities of hydrocarbons or solvents are encountered in ex-cavated soil and are carried to the surface plant with the CDP Slurry System, ap pro pri ate environmental absorbent materials may be placed on the slurry tank to signifi cantly re-duce the quantity of hydrocarbon or solvent present. This practice has been utilized on con tam i nat ed soils on the Boston Central Artery.

Environmentally Friend ly

SlurryPro CDP fl uids are non-toxic and are readily de grad able to fa cil i tate disposal. Be cause SlurryPro CDP con tains no oil, it is en vi ron men tal ly cleaner than liquid emul sion poly mers (PHPA, or par- tial ly-hy dro lyzed poly acry la mides). SlurryPro CDP is high-purity, high-per for mance Dry Vinyl™ synthetic polymer. In con trast, liquid emul sion PHPA poly mers typically contain less than 30% active poly mer, up to 35% refi ned hy dro car bon oil, 3% to 5% sur fac tants (de ter gents and emul si fi ers), and 30% to 35% water.

In many cases, used SlurryPro CDP fl uid can be readily dis posed of on-site with out treat ment. SlurryPro CDP fl uids can be further broken down to facilitate disposal or clean up by treating with Klean-Break™ . This "kills" the poly mer and reverts the slurry to water. Treated fl uids are en vi ron men tal ly safe when han dled as directed.

Alternative Methods for Slurry Dis pos alResidual CDP slurry is an excellent and non-toxic dust control agent for construction sites and dirt roads. It can be applied by transferring residual slurry (without chem i cal ly breaking it down) to a tank truck fi tted with spray bars. The truck then distributes the slurry over the surface of a site or road by spray-ing. A thin layer of vinyl polymer slurry binds the soil together and dries rapidly, to suppress dust. Us-ing slurry as a dust control agent is a productive and economical way to use a non-toxic waste product to reduce airborne dust pollution.
