FELA_AZW_quart_4.3.indd 1 4/1/13 4:02 PM

STORY OF MUSICIAN’S EXTRAORDINARY LIFE

Friday, April 12th at 8 p.m.

Saturday, April 13th at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m.

His story inspired a nation. His music inspires the world. FELA! tells the true story of the legendary Nigerian musician Fela Kuti, whose soulful Afro-beat rhythms ignited a generation. This critically acclaimed Broadway musical received three Tony Awards and 11 nominations. UApresents, the University of Arizona’s professional performing arts presenter, will host three performances April 12-13 at Centennial Hall.

Kuti defied a corrupt military government and devoted his life and music to the struggle for human dignity. FELA! is a triumphant, inspiring tale of courage, passion and love, featuring Kuti’s captivating music and the visionary direction and choreography of Tony Award-winner Bill T. Jones.

Producers Shawn “Jay-Z” Carter, Will and Jada Pinkett Smith and Ruth and Stephen Hendel recently announced that Grammy Award-winner Michelle Williams, best known as part of the chart-topping pop group Destiny’s Child, will play the role of Sandra Isadore, activist and love interest to Fela Kuti.

“This musical journey is one that I’ve wanted to be a part of since first seeing it on stage in 2008,” said Michelle Williams. “The sounds, the passion and the overall message of Fela Kuti have long intrigued me and speak to my heart. I am simply honored.”

Williams made her Broadway debut in 2003 playing the title role in Aida. In addition, she toured with The Color Purple playing Shug Avery and was the first African American actress to play Roxie Hart in Chicago on London’s West End.

Kuti created Afro-beat—a blend of jazz, funk and African rhythm and harmonies—and mixed these sensual eclectic rhythms with simple but powerful lyrics that openly assailed Nigeria’s corrupt and oppressive dictatorships. Featuring many of Kuti’s songs performed by a combined cast of the original Broadway production and the Royal National Theatre production, FELA! reveals Kuti’s life as an artist and human rights activist and celebrates his pioneering music in what has been hailed as one of the

most exciting, exhilarating and vital stage experiences in recent memory.

“A once in a lifetime experience. Pull your car over so you can immediately buy tickets on the phone.  If you are having breakfast now put down the bagel and order the tickets. This is an amazing production. Powerful and terrific, it just consumes your soul.” -Jared Brown, WGBH, Boston Public Radio

“THE HOT (AND SERIOUSLY COOL) ENERGY that comes from the musical gospel preached by the title character of FELA! feels as if it could stretch easily to the borders of Manhattan and then across a river or two. There should be dancing in the streets!” -The New York Times

“Jim Lewis and the great choreographer, Bill T. Jones, turned this tale into a whirlwind musical with as much precision as Swan Lake and the torrent of energy that emerges from Fela’s own music and lyrics.” -Wall Street Journal

“FELA! RADIATES JOY.” -Entertainment Weekly

REVIEWERS, ROUNDTABLE

The following are reactions from each of AZ Weekly Entertainment Magazine’s film commentators in an effort to generate a well-rounded overview of this weekend’s new releases.

its spectacular special effects (all of which are practical as opposed to computer-generated, by the way) sit in the spotlight. Instead, criticism over its distinct lack of scares as a result of its razor-thin story and star Jane Levy’s habitually heinous performance take center stage. (Grade: C)

totality of the psychological effect through the eyes of youngsters grappling to understand it all. Looking back on that time through ‘Ginger & Rosa’ eyes, let’s not ever come that close again. (Grade: C+)

Joseph: Nearly every actor who appears in writer/director Sally Potter’s new drama “Ginger & Rosa” deserves a standing ovation. However, the only standing that anyone is likely to do for the film itself is the kind that is required when walking out. Although it is always nice when a movie transports viewers to another time and place, this particular motion picture’s purpose in doing so gets somewhat lost along the way. However, if watching characters wander around aimlessly while spouting philosophies that were placed between their lips lacking any finesse from the filmmaker whatsoever sounds like fun to you, then - by all means - have at it. (Grade: D)

‘Evil Dead’Five friends become holed up in a remote cabin. When they discover a Book of the Dead, they unwittingly summon up dormant demons living in the nearby woods, which possess the youngsters in succession until only one is left intact to fight for survival. (R - 90 minutes)

Stan: Writer/director Fede Alvarez’s update of Sam Raimi’s horror classic is indeed, a ‘cut’ above the average horror/thriller. With aptly timed ‘bump scares’ and exceptional special effects, as I sat in my seat for the closing credits, I was reminded by ‘Evil Dead’ that, ‘I’m still alive’ as I took that deep breath! (Grade: B)

Joseph: It is never a good idea to make a promise as audacious as “the most terrifying movie you will ever experience” on your motion picture’s poster. In doing so, TriStar Pictures has robbed “Evil Dead” - writer/director Fede Alvarez’s update of Sam Raimi’s horror classic - of the opportunity to have praise over

‘Ginger & Rosa’Elle Fanning and Alice Englert play inseparable friends who, while growing up in 1960s London, find their relationship redefined as the Cuban Missile Crisis looms. Playing exclusively at The Loft Cinema. (PG-13 - 89 minutes)

Stan: Writer/director Sally Potter’s latest triggered that long suppressed memory of my parents and grandmother in October of 1962, huddled and grasping for any news of the stalemate that was occurring. I was about to turn 16 that month, a sophomore in high school, and quite perturbed that my birthday was taking second place. This view of teens, from across the waters on the other side of the planet, puts into perspective the

MOVIE TWEETS!Still haven’t seen that movie that your friends have been talking about? Film Columnist Randy Montgomery recaps what you may have missed in 140 characters or less.

‘Admission’ Fey and Rudd are more than likeable in this otherwise predictable rom-com set in the world of college admissions. Grade: C

‘G.I. Joe: Retaliation’ Far-fetched & poorly acted. Why can’t Hasbro make a good film based on our favorite toys? How does The Rock get his arms so big? Grade:  C-

‘Olympus Has Fallen’ Really? Is there a moment of this film that’s remotely plausible? No, but it was entertaining. Think “Die Hard” in the White House. Grade C-

‘Spring Breakers’ Harmony Korine’s other films were groundbreaking. This is garbage. Bigger shame on Hudgens & Gomez for being a part of this mess. Grade:  D

‘The Call’ The first hour and fifteen minutes are edge of your seat action packed. The last fifteen spoilt the other seventy-five. Grade: B-

‘The Croods’ A heartfelt animated flick for the kids that made me feel warm and fuzzy at the end, but didn’t keep my attention throughout. Grade: B-

SOUNDBITE SPOTLIGHTThe following quotes were pulled from interviews conducted by AZ Weekly Entertainment Magazine’s film columnists with talent speaking on behalf of movies recently released in theaters.

Writer/Director Fede Alvarez (‘Evil Dead’)By Stan Robinson

“I’m part of that generation that fell in love with ‘Darkman’ and in 2010 Sam Raimi he offered me a blind deal to make a movie together, and we started developing a long feature version of the short and got along very well. He was looking for the right filmmaker and offered me ‘Evil Dead’. He wanted to do it for a long time, and thought that I was the right filmmaker to do it. He wanted me to write it, direct it, to do the whole thing. Sam did everything on the original film truly outside of the studio system and all that allows one to make a more visceral independent film, with one voice and not the studio thing with like a hundred voices on the same film.

“Movies these days can be watched in such a passive way, you watch it, walk out and forget about it, and most movies are like that. With this movie, you have a chance to really shock the audience, and have a grip on the audience throughout the story and that it’s very unique. You realize that you’re acting like a kid by turning your head away, and jump at a few scares. I love your comment that it reminded you that you’re still alive, thank you for that compliment!” – Fede Alvarez

Actors Joshua Sasse and Leah Gibson who also star in the series, share this insight…

Joshua: “There was always a unit on set filming at all times, it was maddening fun. We’d have a shooting call of around 6am in the morning and shooting until around 2 or 3 am, every single day for six days for each episode. With those kinds of hours, both cast and crew grow very close, very quick. We’re all on the same page, with incredibly long hours, and magical filmmaking happens! And when one has such dynamic story elements as ‘Rogue’ has, there’s a sense of bonding. With this series, DirecTV’s choice to really take the gloves off, and break new ground is treading very new territory. Its very gritty and raw piece of entertainment and you’ll experience things that you’ve never ever seen on TV before!

Leah: “The pacing of shooting ‘Rogue’ was different in that we were doing one episode in six days, so it was a pretty fast turnaround, it was very, very fast and I didn’t personally know where my character’s journey was going so it was constantly moving forward with this heightened sense of excitement, and enjoying the fast pace of it! We all approached the first episode with solidifying of characters, morals, and values for who they were, and trusted and moved forward as the new/next script in the series came forward. The series is wonderfully written, and will certainly be talked about ‘around the water cooler’ for sure!

“Rogue,” DirecTV’s first original series, premiere’s on April 3, 2013, on DirecTV’s Audience Network™
