WAR of 1812 (ends 1815)

Era of Good Feelings (Nationalism)

Causes of the War of 1812

The White House is set on fire.

At the Battle of Fort McHenry, near Baltimore, Francis Scott Key watched the all night British bombardment.

At dawn he noticed the US flag was still there!!!

Key expressed his pride in a poem that later became the US National Anthem

Oh, say can you see by the dawn's early light

What so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming?

Whose broad stripes and bright stars thru the perilous fight,

O'er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming?

And the rocket's red glare, the bombs bursting in air,

Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there.

Oh, say does that star-spangled banner yet wave

O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?

Treaty of Ghent ends the war of 1812-1815
